  • Is it the oil? The gas? or the coolant? Spark plugs can be the “canary in the coal mine” for underlying engine issues. Find out 3 things that can foul a spark plug and how to spot the problem with Andrew Markel in this week’s Maintenance Minute!

Finally a good video on plug residue buildup and what it means! Thanks! I have a gmc 350 ,415,000 miles, plugs now have a white residue building up on 1 year old plugs, #7 cylinder has a lot of buildup. I know she is due for a motor replacement, coolant puddles on the intake, blows smoke from ring wear, but can still tow a heavy load.
    Thanks again!

Short, sweet, to the point., and easy to understand.. 10/10 my man 10 out of fuckinnnn 10 for the vid. All these videos from people got 90% of it them laying in he engine bay talking about shit they hate or rambling about their life that’s not related to the engine at all anfs waste of time. Perfectly executed on this.

I ran too much octane booster with MMT in it and it turned all of my plugs orange? I'm assuming orange on the top of all the pistons and the bottom of all the valves? Can I run premium unleaded here in CA and will that shit burn off and go away? or not? Did I harm my motor??

  • @RussellBooth1977

I've found that they can go sooty in a motorcycle engine as if it was running too rich if the piston rings or valve guides are a bit worn.
I asked a couple of people about it 24 years ago,an automotive teacher & a motorcycle shop, they both asked is it blowing any smoke or is it a bit old ?
The band aid fix for that was to go to a hotter spark plug which reduced carbon fouling for a while.
It also depends on what the engine is used for, excessive idling & the spark plugs will run black !

Hi Thanks for helping people with your videos. I have a 95 toyota corolla with 200k, I found oil not on spark plugs but only on their threads. I have check the dry compression and its exactly 200psi on all cylinders. Am not sure if the rings are bad or valve stem seals or either pcv gone bad. I regularly clean pcv and felt its not the problem. Please help. Thanks

Valve cover gaskets are leaking into the spark plug wells.

These were just very extreme cases of spark plug contaminations, often the differences are more subtle.

LOL I love the canary in the coal mine reference, 5 of my plugs were regular for a 100k mile Honda engine, likely factory plugs, but the rear (V6 obviously) steering side plug was black, but not caked with anything, not shiny, just like a matt black carbon like appearance on the electrode porcelain. Best reference for the color would be the inside of the end of a tail pipe, that color. No engine codes, just something I noticed when doing a routine plug swap. The car runs and idles smooth so I was surprised when I saw it.
    Any thoughts?
Is this the early signs of future problems on this cylinder?
I realize this is a 5 year old video and I may not get a response but this is not an urgent issue, I was just curious if you had any tips/feedback for me if you have the time and happen to see this.

My old dad (R.I.P) was a motor mechanic & a used car dealer, sometimes if he had a car for sale with oily rings in one cylinder & had no budget to replace all the rings & bearings, he would just replace the spark plug with a hot plug.

nobody talks about how restricted some exhaust systems are, if you car has a muffler with a tiny 2 inch or less outlet coming out of it you need to drill a hole and jb weld a broomstick or cheap pipe in that and like my post after ur car runs smoother and gets +3-7 mpg on the highway.

Change the pre mix your putting in it. Also thin it out alil. 32.1 or 28.1 is a good place to start.

    • @Ricky350K
      @Ricky350K 2 роки тому

@@dmo848 FYI 32.1 is 4 oz of 2 cycle mix and 50.1 is 2.6 oz of 2 cycle mix. The higher the number the less 2 cycle used.
