If Handbrake keeps changing the output size you must set the desired resolution [on the 'Dimensions' tab] then select Custom
Cropping and make sure the Top, Left, Bottom and Right are set to 0.

What a great video and tutorial......SO practical.....Most of the time when you seek something out like this, it ends up being complicated , frustrating and just enough gets left out that you never fully understand how to solve your problem. That wasn't the case here. Each step was clear and to the point. You're a great teacher. Thank you SO much for this.......

I highly suggest changing the framerate settings from variable to constant (CFR) otherwise this will lead to out-of-sync Audio/Video in the video editing software like adope premiere pro if it stays Variable Frame Rate

you must make and name a preset first, then restart the program and load your preset, all your settings will be there, also use h265/HEVC this will make your video substantially smaler,50% smaller then h264,you can also set this preset as your default preset in the options menu,so when you start the program this preset will always load

    Thank you for your upload.
For your favourite movies and archives: As you know re-encoding will always reduce the source definition by a small margin. Also I have found some film distributors don't always achieve a good job in video transfer and video noise is introduced during processing. If one can be bothered it's worth studying the filter section in Handbrake as you can remove noise and sharpen image. Analogue video captures can also be cleaned up by small percentages.

great tips, but using a lower bitrate is not the way to go,use h265/HEVC instaid of h264,as the lowered bitrate wil cause fast moving objects in the video to get blurred, also using YADIF for de-interlacing makes the video sharper, that is,if your video was interlaced naturally, this way it makes a progressive scan, combining the two fields together

Hi Bro, I give this video a big thumbs up. I have got 62 Mb compressed video from the 1.8 GB original size without losing any detail and quality of the video itself. FYI, I work from Windows and on the "video" tab I only changed the Constant Quality to 18 as per your instructions without tick/change the "Avg Bitrate" (by default the value is 0). Terima Kasih from Indonesia.

hi i have a problem, my video is supposed to be at 1080 x 1080 but it changes the format in handbrake to 828 x 1068 and whenever i try to change it, it changes back to 828 x 1068

Hey buddy. Been a long time handbrake fan, but recently switched over to an app called hybrid which is a front end for vapoursynth with qtgmc deinterlacer.
Blows handbrake out of the water. It has a steeper learning curve. But much better quality.
They have a mac version too. (that’s what i have)

You should have changed the video part from x264 to x265, why? Because it's better encoder quality at a smaller size.
