Also I agree. The days of this and Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike are untouchable.

I mean hop has a point, the lore & gameplay (specifically i refer to the entire brand's tech & how its rolled into wider, in-universe lore AND has gameplay to back it up? Like any other or open world titles would just make it for "looks"). Rolled into a neat package.

Same. I'm not sure if I'll cover Wildlands or Breakpoint. I never played them because the open-world sandbox just didn't make sense to me. Same with The Division. Not sure if I'll cover that.

Wildlands as an open world game is fine, and I honestly think we'd be worse off if it wasn't. In a sense, it was a return to form for the series with less action film set pieces like GRAW and Future soldier (not a dig at them I love them), and more at what Special Forces is meant to do. In fact I dare say it's one of the most authentic representations of what US Army Special Forces does (if not the most realistic.) Breakpoint on the other hand misses the mark completely.

I remember this game being so highly sought after as the big "This is next gen" during the Xbox 360 early days. And honestly, it still looks great. I much prefer it's follow up, Future Soldier, and later Wildlands, but it built with it the foundations of what was to come.

Low key I miss how stiff the aiming was ahead of its time in that sense the aiming felt like Scott is moving his arms to aim the gun and not the gun is attached to the camera.
Advanced Warfighter and GR2 reek of old school 2K prototype shit was cool despite how shit by today's standard's.

    • @Juozapas001
      @Juozapas001 7 місяців тому

I honestly love how that 2000s stuff actually evolved to the point that its getting into actual soldier's hands, although some aspects are lagging behind, like GRAW don't technically have a LPVO with a computer on top of it, instead that fancy "cross-com" monocle handles it.
(A bit of a digression, but the cross-com is kinda horribly explained, but basically everything on screen you see & can do, outside of movement & shooting is handled that earpiece/monocle, check GRAW 2 to see how "2.0" monocle looks).
To the point, IMO if a ghost recon title doesn't have anything of the sort, it doesn't feel like a ghost recon to me, one of the "core pillars" as i like to call it
But like other stuff like body armor or helmets? I mean technically IPHS & MVS are more matured "land warrior" stuff, even scorpion camo pattern is in service since 2019 or so (if my memory serves, for instance)

tbf it was fancy at the time (& led to the more of the popular stuff among SF guys), crye scorpion armor chassis. How i understand its basically a foam vest + bags for armor plates. Its essentially granddaddy of the modern plate carriers, which led to crye CAGE chassis (basically more matured version of scorpion) & offshoots like JPC, CPC, etc.
Helmet on the other hand is a artisent combat helmet, in this case equipped with a helmet cam (basically game's explanation how you get ENVG (that combined NV/thermal thing you see in the vid) mode, zoom mode & target detection while aiming with the cross-com system) & a laser designator. Which is the start for modern high-cut helmets, like OPSOCRE FAST (probably most popular option for SFs)
Now about exoskeletons, they were, initially part of ghost recon future soldier (as i call it "2010" version), but that version got scrapped sometime after E3 2010 (hence the name), the reasoning, as far as i could gather was "piracy" & ubisoft singapore i think it was, at the time was making ghost recon online (later renamed "phantoms", yeah it was PVP game) that technically had the tech (how they explained assault class ability worked (shield + exoskeleton run, like captain america's skill from marvel's avengers)). As far as game launches go, exoskeletons did appear in endwar, while it is its own timeline (like division is), JSFs (US faction) pioneers (engineer units) get APE-1A2 exoskeletons as a measure to reduce load on a individual soldier & option to mount a 6.8SPC gatling gun (M268) on it (as a upgrade during WW3)
A little sidefact about FAST & CAGE chassis: both of them appear in the console version (& PC port) of future soldier game as a "update" t this exact kit (in-universe called the "I.W.S./Integrated Warfighter System) most members from fireteams predator & hunter wear modified versions (to a lesser degree among predator guys, plus their models were re-used from multiplayer mode, to my understanding. While hunter's had stuff like addon armor plate on the CAGE & third rail section on top of the FAST)
In GR didn't exactly do anything too far ahead from actually military prototypes (or in future soldier's case more of concepts), it'd be cool to see such stuff appear in a way that'd affect gameplay/lore (i mean it'd be an option to carry more heavy stuff with less of a mobility penalty, akin to how STALKER does its exoskeletons) specially given how one appeared in wildlands' ghost mode. But i think it'd piss off "milsim" people (given how open world titles attracted those people on consoles, despite them not any or even less mechanically intricate than GRAW or GRFS)

never really knew of these back in the day because of never looking them up. All I knew of was Future Soldier, and I never played that. I just now beat Warfighter 1 PC version a couple of days ago. Very realistic and tense; you have to move your soldiers to specific points, which is very realistic and strategic. Also, on the PC version, enemies are scattered in multiple areas; there's no auto aim; it's not see-through walls; the levels are bigger; you have multiple ways to explore/able to crouch fast walk. In the console version, it's only a normal crouch movement. Health regen doesn't happen in the PC version either; it gives the player a way more feeling of I have to make sure not to move fast in the field and to not stay out in the open as much, whereas you can get away with that in the console version because of health regen and the enemies aren't as spread out over the levels. The enemies do more damage on the PC version also; the guns for your partners can also be selected.
At the moment, I'm playing the 2nd game PS3 version. It has a different style; it's fun, but it's not as fun and realistic as that PC version of 1. I read on pages that the 2nd game is the same style as the PC version of GRAW 1.

  • @mawkishwarden172

My absolute favourite moments from GRAW 2 (360 version) were the dynamic voicelines matching how intense the situation was. Those few times when sh*t was really going down (the first time being when the rebels blew the bridge on the friendly Mexican convoy in the last part of This Place is an Inferno) and you could get Mitchell to scream “Team, MOVE!”, “Go, go, go!”, “Regroup!” and “FIRE!” all under Tom Salta’s banging soundtrack got the blood pumping in 11 year old me.
Then there were those little touches, like at the finale when you call in the airstrike and are knocked down, you can still have the tacmap open and see the Black Hawk circling down to your team. Damn it was such a good game. Sure the controls were clunky and the gameplay a bit bland at times. But it also had heart and soul - something that I can’t say for Wildlands and Breakpoint with their open world 'sandboxes'.

  • @egyptiandoge

This was my intro to Ghost Recon series and I love it. There’s just something fascinating about it. At the time, the US Army was working on the Future Combat System, Land Warrior and many other modernization projects that Ubisoft used to create GRAW 1 and 2. Hence why I felt so immersive playing as a Ghost, a special forces unit created to test fire the emerging weapons and equipment, technologies and new tactics. I felt that the shift from this to Wildlands and Breakpoint was what broke the series for me. No longer am I a special forces member using the emerging technology, but a generic Barbie and Ken operator for cosmetics using bland name weapons and fight against generic nameless terrorists on some fictional island or fictionalized open world. In short, they made the subsequent titles post Future Soldier less immersive for me.

I'm 2 days late on this, but one of my favorite ubisoft games. And personally think, its better than open world stuff they've released in mid-late 2010s, IMO
Like i realize its far from perfect, but i find some weird, nieche charm that i can't exactly say any other shooter has... of that i played, anyway. Like i feel that way with the entire "clancy" brand till around 2013
Oh, btw a sidenote, the thermal goggles are part of the display system (that blue lense you see on mitchell). It was a representation of enhanced night vision tech, the "PSQ-20" US army at the time, integrated into the "cross-com", everything really, outside of shooting & moving around are handled by that monocle (it also doubles as a radio earpiece & why you get the diamonds on the sceeen, "datalinks" to use the buzzwords military likes)

I only had a PC and therefore only played the PC version. Feels like it is much more immersive but the AI is just as braindead. Had to do basically everything by myself as the player but I think it could be awesome in coop. One drawback of the PC version was that some enemies didn't render if the player wasn't close enough but I remember it being a problem on only one level.
Edit: I remembered the worst part, the AI getting stuck on the way to mission end evac chopper soft locking me out of the mission end.

Yeah, it's a shame the PC version didn't have good AI, because it was mechanically based on the very first GR game which gave you much more tactile control of the team which allowed for more in-depth and complex planning such as setting up ambushes with overlapping fields of fire.

GRAW 2 is just straight up better an every way, and It's my personal favorite out of the entire series, though Future Soldier has a lot to offer as well. I will say, *some* of your gripes are still present in the sequel like the control scheme (which isn't an issue really, I think it's just you being more familiar with CoD) and the movement is also the same, (also a design choice but not even a bad thing, just needs player acclimation,) but also very fluid once you take the time to learn it.
Also, fun fact, Cpt. Scott Mitchell saw his first appearance in Ghost Recon 2 on the original Xbox, not in GRAW.
