Really impressed with the winners run, but equally impressed with Marcus o'sullivans 94th sub 4 min mile too. Did he reach his goal of attaining 100 sub 4 min miles? I think Eammon Coghlan was the 1st man to pull off that perticular record? What is it with Longevity and Irish milers? I think Marcus, Eammon, Frank O'mara and 1 other Irish athletes name who escapes me now hold the world record for the 4x 1 mile relay. What a serious group of 4 runners from a tiny island like Ireland to have all at 1 time and there where others around at that time from Ireland who cud run sub 4's too. What has happened to our depth in strenght and middle distance runners?? It was a golden time 4 Irish Athletics thats 4 sure 😉
John Walker (New Zealand) was the first to run 100 sub-4 minute Miles. Yes Marcus O'Sullivan did reach 100, he ran 101 by the end of his career. Surprisingly Eamonn Coghlan never reached 100, he ran 83 in total (indoor and outdoor).
@@johnbowden1140 no you are incorrect, it was definitely Jon Walker who was the first to run 100 sub-4's. Steve Scott has currently ran the most sub-4's.... Walker ran his 100th in February 1985 and Scott ran his 100th in May 1985....
Wrong there commentator. It's not frustrating to be that close to a record; it's inspiring and tells you that you can really do it. It's only frustrating if you let up at the end and don't make it.
hes a pacer, which helps some people in the begining of the mile so they dont go slow but the pacers dont run the mile because they slow down at the third lap.
They were just showing his time for 1500 meters and comparing it to the world record time, which he was only 2 seconds off, then they went back to show the time for WR for the mile.
and only 2 people have even broken 3:47 being jakob and alan webb. never understood why in the 80s and 90s people like cram, morceli, hicham were running 3:44, 3:45, and 3:46 like it was nothing
@@trevorturner8037 I agree but I would keep the "like it was nothing" for El Guerrouj only, even if the quantum leap happened when Morceli brought the record from 3:46 to 3:44, after that he "only" managed to run 3:45 once. But along what you are saying it is amazing that the best of the best today with the lights and the fancy shoes only runs a second faster than Seb Coe 42 years ago in Brussels and Cram still has the European record.
@@sergelu that’s my bad. poor choice of words but yeah that’s what I meant. you would think with the wavelight pacing and super shoes there would be quite a few 3:45s from people like jakob, cheruiyot, katir etc. but not very many people have even come close
I think even Steve Cram could have challenged HeG that day, even in is 1985 fitness. he said before his WR that 3.44 was a possibility if he had been pushed.
You make me laugh,Cram!!!!! El g would've made Cram,Ovett and Coe look like amateurs. Morceli,Ngeny and lagat were far superior athletes than all the British 1500m runners combined. let me break it down to you from 1996 to 2004 Morceli beat El g once Ngeny beat El g once. lagat beat El g once.

Only 25 seconds in and there is an idiot of a pundit who says Venuste Niyongabo is "the olympic silver medallist" - WRONG! He won the GOLD Medal! Geez, why do American commentators make such huge blunders!
AND at 4:18, commentator says he is 7/10ths of a second off the world record - WRONG!! He is 0.51 of a second off it. So he takes another stab at the calculation and still gets it wrong! Really, really annoying commentator!
gakaface Excuse me, the commentator corrected himself to “about 6/10 ths of a second”. So I don’t see your point. He spoke in approximation not exact time.
Commentator says HeG missed out on gold in 1996 when he fell. When you study that race, it is not obvious that he would have won. In fact, Morceli runs the last lap in about 54 and HeG runs it n about 58. He is a good 3 or 4 seconds slower than Morceli over the final lap. Even though HeG fell, he couldn't sprint faster than about 57 or 58 for the final lap. This tells me, that even if he hadn't fallen, Morceli would have run away from him and won anyway.
Francis Hooton , El G was about to pass Morceli and take control of the race, that's why he tripped him. You could see Morceli's leg make a weird motion to the left as El G was about to pass him.
Your comments show jealousy and you cant swallow the pill of being an ignorant. Ur math is wrong. When El G fell ot took his momentum away, the whole field is gone ahead of him, it destroyed his mental state at the moment, plus when you fall on the track is worse than falling on regular ground if you understand what that means, the impact alone will take your entire energy. Look man, u r a jealous asshole from somewhere that cant run sub 3:30 more than 3rd of his career. Be a human of respect.
Watching him run is a thing of beauty. Absolutely NO wasted energy.
And amazingly his running form evolved throughout the years
This guy had his second best race here. Didn't have as many rabbits like he did when he broke the world record later.
Third best race. He ran 3:44:60 in 98 and 3:43:13 in 99
In full flight on the back straight EL G is a sight to behold. Beauty!
El Guerrouj what a LEGEND!
isn't 3:46 the world record?
