- Coe looked less than confident in this race,but still managed to regain the mile world record he'd lost to Ovett the year before,setting a new time of 3.48.53.Trailing in his wake were Kenyan Mike Boit,in a new African record,and Coe's fellow countryman Steve Cram,in his first sub 3.50 mile.It's an odd record in itself that Coe only ran the mile three times between 1979 and 1981,and broke the WR each time!
i remember the coe, ovett, cram era as being the best years for British middle distance running. really loved the rivalry.

A tough race for Seb yet he still claims another WR. No better runner ever to grace the track. Awesome speed and stamina. That final 120 meters was utterly remarkable. Not sure any middle distance runner could generate that speed! Truly, poetry in motion.
Coe is so inspiring!! That kick speed at the end looks super human.

I used to go regularly to Crystal Palace for Athletics meetings with my Grandad as we were both keen fans!
I can recall one time when we saw a newbie . He ran with an elegance, and grace never seen before. After the race we just looked at each other. Wow! This boy has got a big future

I used to go to the meeting when small, it's sad about the crystal palace now, l know that there is no diamond league , but in the future a world continual tour ,is next best.but I hear they are thinking of pulling down the jubilee stand , the flood light is in this repair, and falling apart , the swimming pool and diving is closed. I heard there got a grant of over 200 million pounds to repair the crystal palace , this year ,2023.

I remember this also for the fact that the BBC were broadcasting their 9 O'Clock news and broke off to go live to this race. It was the first time it had ever happened for a sporting event and I don't know if it has happened since.
That why 1981 in sports it was a release of anger because earlier in the year in the UK had the riot's then everything changed the cricket Botham and the coe vs ovett madness ,and huge crowd and TV coverage was unbelievable
That's not entirely true BBC had previously done it for David Bedford during his multiple record attempts in 1970 and 71
What an immense athlete Sebastian Coe was. He did that pretty much alone, sheer grit at the last 100m

Yeah great times ,I remember reading in a running mag in full gallop his stride length was 7 foot ,think about that and measure it out .....incredible,great couple of months with those to breaking world records every week.

I’d call SC an all time great middle distance runner. If it wasn’t for illness he’d have competed at the 83 and 87 World Championships. I’d wager he’d have won at least one gold to add to two Olympic golds (at 1500m). He could and should have been a multiple global 🥇 His precious metal achievements don’t quite do him justice.
nah, he never won gold in his favourite event, 800m. There have been far better runners since, esp from Africa. Rudishas 800m in OG 2012, 1 min 40 is the greatest 100 seconds ever.

There was a magic in racing the mile in the early eighties. It was in the air. I was there. Not a sub-four but in the very low four +. Still that exhilaration today.

Cram was some runner. If he hadn’t arrived at the same time as Ovett and Coe he would have had more recognition. Great to watch that languid stride eating up the other athletes.

@@davidkavanagh9551 remember Coe breaking the 800 metre world record 1 min 41 ,incredible ,stood for 17 years I think ,his stride was apparently 7 feet in full flow ,think about that, it's huge.

The time at 1500m wasn’t a split time it was ovetts 1500m world record, this was officially an attempt on both records which would have been a phenomenal achievement. Coe ran a slightly faster split in his next mile record 3:32 94 , ovetts splits in his world mile records were in the same ballpark 3:32.7/8. From memory ovett thought it was a complete no goer in that if you broke the 1500 record you would die over the last 109m of the mile.
I dtarted running the mile in high school. At 17 yrs old i was with the sub 4 with 3.59. I entered the army in the same year was mvp track and fielf as a junior. I would practice at all distances. I planned on the decarhlon in '80 but USA boycotted. My time in the 100m was 9.4 and 400m 49.1
I knew i could break 3.47-48. In '84 i was just peaking my prime but preparing for football i was benching 405 easily and leg pressing 800. I knew my time of running was up when i was injured in jan 84. I signed up as a police officer and since i went through paramedic instructor i was a perfect fit for tactical medic. Getting shot once made me second guess but stayed long enough to be a State Trooper in 2008.
You say your 100m time was 9.4, I smell a pony in the vicinity. " I knew I could do" this and that . But didn't.

in his entire career i think this is the year coe was at his healthiest and sharpest - coe still seemed really hungry, while ovett, still awesome, had admittedly lost a bit of his edge after moscow, still ran great times, but a bit satisfied following his 800 gold
In 1981 I was privileged to see Ovett break the World 1500m record on the Wednesday in Koblenz then on the Friday i followed Seb Coe to the Heysel Stadium in Brussels for the Golden Mile where all the greats of middle distance running (except Ovett) assembled. Coe was again chased by Mike Boit and was just outside the 1500m record but the crowd sucked him down the home straight to break the world mile record again. Still the greatest sporting event i have ever seen live, the atmosphere was simply electric and the noise when the new WR flashed up was unbelievable

Decades ago, in Sports Illustrated, there was a story that when Walker set the mile record his last 200m was in 24 seconds. I'm 70, now. That was some running. I wonder what he could do the 200 in.

Wonderful times watching great middle distance runners. Records broken amid great rivalry and cram showing us how good he would be. It was hard to pick Coe over overt but like Borg and mc Enroe or Higgins v Davis it made great watching

Long remembered athlete. All participants completed race within 4 minutes. Other young people have to complete mile distant in 5 minutes.

i remember watching this on tv and being very sad, he didn't get the 1'500metres record which was harder ,the commets below is right this races and in belgium 3.44 and 3.29 ,great pacemaking by bryers this is what, should have be his record.
why do runners now don't attack ,the mile record,2'000m,and 3'000 record,i think the diamond league should have these events,their is a market for these great distances
I wished they had done a documentary on Tom Byers at that time in 1981 about the Coe Vs ovett because he was a good runner who won in Oslo way out in front but was one one the greatest pacemakers in the sport at that time . there must of done something at that time

Cheers. No, he didn't look as confident as he did a week later in Brussels, but Coe didn't do himself any favours by running the first 4 bends wide on Byers' shoulder. That must have meant running an extra 1.5m per bend, or 6m in total. That would have brought his time down to around 3:47.6. The whole point of a rabbit is so that you can run behind them on the curve, thus running only the exact distance required and also getting drafting benefits in their slip stream for the first 3 laps.

I remember in Brussels Belgium, should of broken the 1500/mile in the same race was on for 3.30 and 3.45,at one point.one of the hards to do now, because they are getting nowhere near the outstanding 1500m/ Mie world record for nearly,20 year's which is disappointing

And it loooooks like Ovett's mile record will survive too.......................fifteen seconds...................and Coe has done it.....he has wiped out Ovett's mile record! I love the authoritative announcers that can predict the future. Anyone want to add some bacon to that egg on face?
Sir Roger Bannister also ran under 4 minutes in this race. As Coe crossed the finish line, you can just see Bannister approaching the home straight.

Coe was really treading through treacle on that last lap! However, it is deceptive how he actually did a 56.85 on that last lap. We can never be sure if that is for 400m or for 440 yards, but what we do know is the 1500m and the mile times and that difference comes to 15.25 seconds, which equates to 55.84 seconds for 400m so he hardly raised a significant sprint like he did in his 3:47 WR, where he ran 14.40, more like he slowed down the least of the first three which is why he pulled away from Boit and Cram slightly.
Coe wasn't very happy with his finish time here, despite it being a new world record. But he did himself no favours by: - 1) Declaring it a WR attempt weeks before, which he said caused some stress by the time of the race, as the BBC delayed the 10 O'Clock news to show the race live!; 2) Unlike Brussels 9 days later, where he tucked in behind Byers, the pacer, here he runs alongside of him for the first 5 bends (and up to 1000m in total), which meant he probably ran an extra 2m on each of the first 5 bends. That's 10m or about 1.4sec!; 3) By running alongside Byers, he got practically no drafting that he should have got (and did up to 900m in Brussels) up to the bell. The general consensus is that for every 400m run where you are drafted (even in still conditions), you save between 0.7 and 1 sec. In theory, had Coe not run wide and benefited from being drafted by Byers, at least up to 1000m, he could have been at least 3.2 secs faster, bringing his time to around 3:45.3. I think the way he increased his speed in the last 100m in Brussels, with a 13.1 in a 3:47, showed he was capable of 3:45 in 81.
Good pace on that 1st lap Coe must have gone through in 56.5 which is exactly what he needed. Quite an even pace throughout and Im not sure why Coe was in better form a week later in Brussels as he made his 3.47 look easy.
Coe was just warming up here,,,as he did in los Angeles 3 years later getting his body into maximum drive,,,,,I'm STILL CONVINCED COE WAS CAPABLE OF 3:45'9 THAT NIGHT IN BRUSSELS AND SHOULD HAVE GONE AT 350/ 300 ,,,,NOT THE LAST 💯 METRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK AT HOW HE FINISHED,,,,, HINDSIGHT EH ????
Yes, the first lap (440) was perfectly paced at 56.5 for Coe, but the 2nd lap slipped to 57.7 for Coe. The main reasons for Coe not running faster that night was due to 2 things: 1) He ran wide on the shoulder of Byers for the first 2.5 laps; this not only meant he got little drafting from the pacer (which can be as beneficial as 0.7 secs a lap through less air resistance) but he ran about 8-9m wider (on 2nd to 6th bends) than he nedded to had he run immediately behind the pacer, which he corrected in his Brussels run; 2) When Byers started to slow down on the back straight of the 3rd lap, Coe hesitated, waited too long (in his own words post race), and didn't make a move until Byers dropped out just beyond 1000m. Had Coe gone at the 900m mark, he'd probably have been a second faster at the end. Without the extra distance, you can take off another second. His time at the end should have been about 3:46.5.
@@jeremyhomewood9573 I think Coe was in better shape in Brussels than he'd been a week earlier in Zurich, where he should have run around 3:46.5. The pacing in Brussels was pretty awful (worse than Zurich), with the first 440 too fast, 55.3 (3:41 pace) and the 2nd too slow at 58.0 (3:52 pace). Had Coe reached the 880 in 1:53 with 2 laps of 56.5, then he would have felt so much better. He also had a trip on lap 3, and the pace slowed further. Coe said at the time, that had he 'gone for it' at the bell, rather than float and only kick in home straight, he'd have run 3:46.5. Well, with better, more economical pacing , e.g. 56.5, 56.5, 56.5, then you can knock another second off that time. Coe was capable of 3:45 flat (or thereabouts) that night.
If only Coe had had someone he could rely on to pace him for 1300 metres and cover up behind, he could have taken chunks out of his best 1500 metres and mile times!
You have to love the photographer crouching in the middle of the track as Coe tries to break the world record. I don't think that would be allowed these days!

Yes, I feel he was capable of sub 3:45 in 81 with good even pacing to the bell and someone not far behind to push him over the last lap. And I'm not sure that those who have run sub 3:45 (just 3 men) were totally un-enhanced!

So when he looked strained over the last 200m, it was because it would have felt like he'd just run a sub 3:45. He (or the rabbit) really blew a lot of chances for faster times by running wide and receiving no drafting.

If you even out the splits it gives 3:48.3, not much of an improvement. But, he ran the first 5 bends wide on the curves, which must have been at least an extra 10m run. That brings his time down to 3:46.9. Then he had no drafting at all in the race. One would expect at least drafting to the bell, which is 3 laps. Each 400m with no drafting is meant to be equivalent to 1 sec disadvantage. So in theory, this run is worth something around 3:43.9!! That's equivalent to a 3:27.3 1500m.
That is my only criticism of Coe: he would almost always run on the shoulder of the first athlete, thus on outside of lane one, needlessly increasing the distance run. I have no explanation as to why he did it. Even in this race he should have hit the front on the back straight and not have overtaken Byers at the start of the curve - most curious! Coe is still my favourite athlete though!
Coe ran wide on Byers' shoulder and thus got no drafting benefits at all for the first 3 laps, as after 1000m he was in front anyway. If you believe the stat that drafting saves you 1.0 sec per lap, Coe could have (in theory of course) saved 3 secs with perfect drafting to the bell. That would have given him a time around 3:44.6; something which I believe he was capable of in the right race.
Coe often made schoolboy errors. Glancing behind him in some races rather than just getting on with it. If you are a world class runner or a club runner just run your race and if someone is too good they are too good. What are you going to do if someone comes past when you are at your max? Sprout wings?

Coe’s turnover at the end is just remarkable. I have no idea has that is even possible. Many races, the others have no chance.
Coe might have something undiscovered/under explored in medicine. Maybe a body which could get rid off lactic acid from the muscle or resist it longer by science unexplained. Lots of people train and train hard and have perfect physiques for the sport but you don't see people who can sprint off tough laps. Coleman called the record "off" because he hadn't seen it before. Never seen it since. Michael Johnson the same - something vaguely supernatural.
great 1500 and miles in the 80s, the thing i don't like about it now is 1.why do they mostly wear same sports wear colours blue, brown,nike, addidas red ,orange yellow.i no they pay the stars to wear they gear. it was better for people watching back then, with,cram in club logo ,and scott sub 4 and coe GB logo .

We miss running. It never goes away. That 1981 Coe race just brings it all back. As Kipchoge and Tuohy and others take this generation so much farther, we cheer them on. As the smell of warm track rubber in the sun gives us flashbacks to a great time that the current generation is racing now. The runner knows it. When a female breaks 4 or “man” lands on Mars I hope to be watching. Nearly in tears like when Kipchoge ran the sub-2 Marathon last month. Former runners offer our best wishes to the current generation of talent!
Yes, you are right, I can't understand why he was running on his shoulder like that, not only the drafting, but losing time by running further around the bend. Who knows what he may have been able to achieve in optimal circumstances.

Jim Ryun was every bit as good as Coe for the mile. Coe bested Ryun by just a tad over 3 seconds much later after Ryun's 1967 performance of 351.1 with more training techniques in his prime and better luck, i'm sure Ryun could have bested his own record by another 3 0r 4 seconds.
Coe ran 3:47 a few days later in Brussels .Ryan was a great runner but Coe won double Olympic gold in the metric mile (1500m) whereas Ryun won one silver.
@Michael You are probably right. But you could make a similar argument for successive generations. That's why records improve. Evolution. You can only ever really be the best of your own era.
Better sports medicine, equipment and track and he would have been close. Ryun had a lot of upper body muscle and played a lot of sports which I don't think were aiding him at the mile. Muscle weighs more than fat. Probably had a freakish pulse range to make up for it.

Synthetic EPO wasn't developed until many years after this and not used in athletics until the early/mid '90's, long after Coe had retired.
Think the first major cheating in track started with doc roger and his "sub" 4 minute mile run in 1954...Coe...michael johnson...flojo.....cram...guess only certain people take "the fall"...Ben Johnson...Lance Armstrong....Barry Bonds record seems tainted...like a grown man hitting little league homeruns.....oscar and his go go gadget legs...all these freakish athletic performances...and the drooling sports announcers...gets nauseating!
John Rogan If you're referring to Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher's pace making tactics as 'cheating' you really think that is a balanced comparison to drug cheating and blood doping? Is an athlete 'cheating' if he sits on the shoulder of a tiring athlete until the last 100m and sprints past for the win? or is he simply the better tactition?
For someone who finds these feats of achievements nauseating yet can list quite a few of them and goes to the length of viewing it and commenting on UA-cam we can conclude one of several things on this list.
1) You're a troll (in which you'll get no further reply from me)
2) You're a bitter failed athlete
3) You took a masochistic academic interest in things that make you 'nauseous' possibly a Degree in Mundane Achievements
4) You ran a 3:47 mile in the late 1970's which no one saw or can verify without pace making, in racing flats, on a rainy cinder track and you're pissed off Seb got the glory.
glad u brought up Bannister and his first sub 4 mile run...run that tape....he ran a 4:07 that day....clock it....the only thing funnier is the horse touts trying to get the time of 1:54.99 changed to 1:53 for thriple crown winner Secretariat!...The tape clocks to exactly 1:55, the same time posted at the horse track that day...Seb is a cheat...like Lance Armstrong...My only problem is training with the techniques that made Peter Snell and Jim Ryun true champions, not drugged up greyhounds!

Both Coe and Ovett were just on another level to the rest . Ovett had his ' church railings ' incident that put him out of action for a long time ... he was never really the same after that . Cram was good .. but never really had the ' competition ' to test him like the other 2 did .

@@simonedwards5564 Cram was Olympic finalist at 19. Another legend. Always thought he wasn't as tough as Coe and got himself in to a gold-or-nothing attitude. Too much publicity and TV ads too young. You should always do the best you can - and the end of his career I thought he was quitting in races.
It’s tragic and it breaks my heart… to see how coe in 2024 has become such a despised, worthless human. Considered so corrupt, so greedy, so obsessed with pocketing untold vast amounts of money in circumstances that will never stand up to total transparency. Going from a most loved and respected English Athlete, from being someone who we all looked upto and dreamed of becoming to now having sold his soul, lost his sense of decency, honesty and honour. As one man to another…. I just want to look at him face to face and say to him quietly… What you have done….what you are still continuing to do is NOT what any decent, honest, honourable real man would ever think to do seb…
