  • A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1994 license-based beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, The Pirates of Dark Water.
    Played through as Ren on the default difficulty level. The game begins at 6:10, once the intro and all of the character bios have played.
    The Pirates of Dark Water was a reasonably popular cartoon back in the early 1990s, eventually becoming the basis for a Marvel comic series, a line of action figures, and of course, the obligatory tie-in video games.
    The game is one of many arcade style brawlers that showed up on the SNES in the mid-90s, and it's unfortunate that it seemed to slip through the cracks without much notice. Sunsoft's reputation had been in decline for awhile at this point, but The Pirates of Dark Water showed that they could still put out a good original game.
    You get your choice of Ren (Cody, the average), Tula (Guy, the speedy), and Ioz (Haggar, the hulking mountain), and though they all carry weapons, they play just like their Final Fight counterparts.
    Everyone gets the standard three-hit combos, grapples, throws, and life gauge-draining heavy attacks as we saw in Final Fight 1-3. Truth be told, if someone swapped the graphics out and put Final Fight 3 on the title screen, nobody would've ever questioned it.
    That's not a bad thing, though. Capcom had the formula down, and Sunsoft managed a near perfect imitation. The controls are sharp and intuitive, the action moves at a good pace (especially in the 2P-simultaneous mode), and the stages feature an interesting variety of settings and traps. The game lasts a bit too long at eight stages, but that's my only complaint about the gameplay.
    And how awesome is that boss battle against Phoenix?
    The graphics are great - there's a good level of detail in the backgrounds and the character sprites, and the cinematics stuck nicely to the feel of the show. The music, though. Yech. If you liked Final Fight 3 and Mega Man X3's soundtracks, you'll probably like this, but I found the gross, twangy attempts at electric guitar sounds to be thoroughly grating.
    If beat 'em ups are your thing, The Pirates of Dark Water is a worthwhile one. It comes damned close to the quality of Capcom's best 16-bit brawlers.

    The villain Bloth's face reminds me of the villain from Don Bluth's _Space Ace_ . My memory has fuzzy flashbacks of possibly watching a cartoon of this way back when. Also, I'm not going to pretend to like Sunsoft's _Aero the Acro-Bat_ , but the company has grown to have a special place in my heart with a track record that includes games like this, NES _Batman_ , and _Blaster Master_ .

    Y'know, this is one thing I've always had curious questions about with the SNES. Why do the HUD graphics on most SNES games look like crap? Even compared to the Mega Drive, it looks like it used fewer colors and they always look washed out. UN Squadron's for example looked straight up NES tier compared to the arcade original. Is this because of shoddy programming or console limitations (heavily betting on the former)

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  2 роки тому +4

      I think it depends on which graphics mode the game is using. The SNES can do up to four background layers, but they all share resources. Many of the stages in this game rely on both a foreground and background layer, and the HUD would be a third. I'd guess it's running in Mode 1, which allows unique 16-color palettes to be assigned to layers 1 and 2, and the third layer uses only 4-color palettes. Since the color depth of the HUD wouldn't be much of a priority, many games used the 4-color layer to display it.

    2 hour beat em up with a very limited moveset and 3 enemies max on screen at a time. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
    I would take an 8-bitish looking title like Mystical Fighter over this. If only for the key factors like pacing and challenge.
    Pirates of Dark Water definitely has nice graphics and presentation though.

    If you ask me, after Golden Axe , all games wanted to be like it ... trying to reskin the formula with a new theme or license ... but this time, if you would not write it was from The Pirates of The Dark Water cartoon ... that ended with no ending , since everyone back then wanted to clone the TMNT formula ( 4 mutants , 1 hot chick , 1 wise old fart and 1 nemesis with 2 goons) since teens wanted a sexuialized hero trips... i would believed this is Golden Axe IV ... and knowing the bootleg market it "was"

  • @Harrisow
    @Harrisow 2 роки тому +1

    Why did they cancel The Pirates of Dark Water?
    Four words: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
    Once those 4 heroes in a half shell skyrocketed into popularity back in the late 80s'- early 90's, everyone else who wanted their own version of teenage mutant ninja turtles surrendered to the point of their own killers getting either cancelled or never seeing the light of day.

    • @ginormousaurus8394
      @ginormousaurus8394 Рік тому

      @@robertwilson1295 I suspect The Pirates of Dark Water was cancelled for a few reasons. It was reportedly expensive to make compared to other Hanna-Barbera cartoons, the toy line based on the series was unsuccessful, and the show shifted around the TV schedule, which made it harder for it to build a loyal audience. The Pirates of Dark Water began as a five-part mini-series that aired on weekday afternoons on Fox, then it became a Saturday morning cartoon on ABC (where it competed in its time slot with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on CBS), and then it aired in weekly syndication as part of The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera.
