I've been cutting the stem at the base for years. It is backbreaking trying to get to the bottom of each one. This will make it much easier and better for the bulbs. Thank you.
I got daffodils this year along with many others that are hardy as well for the first time, and this video has helped so much thank you 😄 🌞🌱. Keep making great videos.
Thank so much for your info. I'm from Canada and we have so many out there and I have some plants inside of my home look beautiful in spring here we have lots snow .
Thank you! Wonderful tips - what is the best way to deal with the bulbs once the leaves have died and are cut away? Leave them in the ground ? Water them frequently ? Thank you!
Thanks so much. Can you leave the bulbs in the container.(during Summer in Australia) ..and also can you plant other plants around them to add some colour to the pot ?
Yes, in summer they die back to just bulbs so you can plant up the same container with summer growing plants and it won't affect the bulbs. Just be careful not to damage the bulbs when digging the planting holes.
@@Gardeningat58N thank you so much! I'm pretty well new at gardening...and am beginning to love it...will watch more of your videos...my very best to you.
Our 2nd year with our Bulbs we planted 500, some did not come out this year x i hate it when they die. We wait until all the leaves go brown and we cut them off, put grit on top ready for the winter x
Great explanation of why one needs to deadhead spent daffodil flowers. I plan to do that for all our yellow daffodils once they're done blooming. However I wish to save the seeds on the pink daffodils since I would like to get more of them without having buy bulbs.
Very helpful information! My daffodils were planted before I bought my house and I am just learning about how to care for them. They have gone 2 seasons without flowering. If I divide the bulbs and replant, do I have hope that they will in time flower again?
Yes that might help them to flower. Sometimes if they have grown in the same place for many years they will have divided into many small bulbs and will no longer have space to make big enough bulbs to flower. Dividing them will give them the space they need to flower, do this just after the foliage has died down in late spring/early summer. Also make sure they are in a spot where they get lots of strong spring sunshine and don't cut back any of the leaves until they go yellow. Also applying a balanced feed to the plants in early spring will help. It will probably take a couple of years, but these steps should encourage them to flower again.
how would I plant the seeds? I have tons of bulbs, & I wanted to sacrifice a couple,(just a couple lol) & see if I can grow the seeds into the bulbs very helpful video!
Sow them in a tray with seed compost or a multi-purpose compost low in feed. Bury them just a few millimetres under the surface and keep the compost damp. When they germinate they will look like grass and won't form a bulb until late in the year. It will probably take 3 to 5 years for them to build up a large enough bulb to flower. But the exciting thing about growing them from seed is you might get new flowers which are slightly different from the parent plants.
After the first year they will be big enough to plant into bigger pots . Probably best to do this in autumn, being spring bulbs they will need all four seasons to grow well so growing them outside is best once they have germinated. To make sure they grow quickly keep them in a sunny location and feed them with a balanced fertiliser whilst they are growing.
The main cause of daffodils not flowering is cutting back the leaves too early the year before or tying up the leaves just after flowering. If you allowed the leaves to die back naturally last year then the problem is probably too much shade over April and May, or the daffodil leaves being smothered by other plants/grass.
This video is so helpful! I'm not a gardener but have my first little garden patch at the front which I'm testing on. It received a lot of sun. I've planted some end of season sale roses which I have no idea what will happen to them over the next year I also have some huechera But I'm wondering if I can plant daffodils and tulips with them or if that is a bad idea.
Hi. First thank you for this video. Second i would like to know if i want to grow daffodils from seeds they need to be covered with soil? And how long this could take? As i am doing this as an experiment i have enought time.
I have this plant outside in the garden soil, but I took a seed and planted it in a pot and I see that it grows very slowly compared to the one planted in the ground. what could be the problem?
The seeds are very small and so there is very little energy for them to grow quickly. The bulbs are about a thousand times bigger and so grow much faster with all the stores energy. The young plant will form a bulb in it's first year and each year it should grow bigger and faster until it is big enough to flower.
It's very helpful. But what should I do if the daffodils are growing too tall and they're not really growing in organized way. How should I trim some leaves?
+NOUSHIN MAHMOOD you can tie the leaves up with string or hold them up with small bamboo canes. They need to keep thier leaves as it needs to store up as much energy as possible before going dormant. If you cut the leaves or tie them up too tight it cant photosynthesize as much and so won't flower as well next year. If possible grow them in a sunnier location next year, this will cause them to grow shorter, but stronger flower stems and leaves.
I planted some all over. I had a few come up blind but most came flowering. Now my daffodils are starting to shrivel up now which is a shame as i am seeing daffodils everywhere and they are flowering strong.
They should be planted in autumn between September and October for best results. They can also be planted whilst they are dormant in summer, but are best done in autumn. If they stop flowering after a few years it is because the leaves have been cut back too early, the plants are not getting enough sun light, or they are too crowded and need spacing out.
Is bone meal good for daffodils? Some of mine daffodils leaves became really thin and stop producing flowers.(no flower for two years) I dug them up and replanted them to give them more space and added bone meal to the soil. Am I doing the right thing?
Lots of good info here, but his voice was very grating. Sorry, but it was. He kept “smacking”, as if he constantly had a full mouthful of saliva. So much gasping and huffing, too. Nice plants; bad orator.
Thanks I just ordered 500 bulbs. I learned something today.
That was quite a lot!

Gardening at 58 North & do I just keep them hurried for 3-5 years until it's big enough?

Thank you for this. I’ve got aphids and discovered it’s because I have too much nitrogen. One question, how do you spell Tomorai Tomorei Tomorye?

Do the same rules apply to Primula? Some of the leaves, flowers and stalks are rotting, so I have cut them down to ground level.
Really helpful Thank you.
Care in New jersey?
Jersey? AFTER BLUMING IN NJ?
I planted some all over. I had a few come up blind but most came flowering. Now my daffodils are starting to shrivel up now which is a shame as i am seeing daffodils everywhere and they are flowering strong.
Either you have an earlier flowering variety, the soil is too dry or there is narcissus fly damaging the plants.
Great information - thank you 😊
