When Billy Graham learned from Vince Sr. he would be dropping the belt to Backlund, he was like "Bob Backlund?" And he told Bruno he wanted to drop it back to Bruno, and Bruno said "Oh no, you won't!" Backlund was a good wrestler, a shooter with the amateur background, but he had no personality whatsoever!
Vince Sr was not the type to deviate away from a plan. If it would have been Vince Jr in charge, Billy would have been turned face and it would have been Superstarmania running wild in 1978.
Backlund was popular, professional, could legitimately wrestle in case of a screw job. Graham just wasn't what many old school promoters were after at the time, he could have ushered in a more lucrative era but Vince Sr wasn't into merchandising and all the show biz as he put it. Besides, Backlund was still very popular in his early run as champion but it fizzled out.
Thank the wrestling Gods that the Grand Wizard was in this video with these three dopes.
Grand wizard was so funny.
Thought of that deep analysis and observation all by your lonesome?

Mil Mascaras couldn't even sell his own promo.
He didn't want to put it over.
Why in the world would ANYONE, including Bob Backlund, want Howdy Doody as a champion over Superstar Bill Graham?
I have no idea too.
