I think anything you make yourself has an edge on shop-bought things, thinking of scenic things. They're uniquely yours. Your pond looks particularly pondy.
@@BudgetModelRailways We (me and 7 yr old Sylvia) are about to make a permanent layout and wrestle with questions like: how important is realism... weathering... a continuous loop of track... ? etc. I tend to think that the point is to create whatever gets your excitement going... Your videos are very encouraging!
@@mewsdo . Ignore all advice from the purists. There is a guy on Instagram who is making a pink and purple layout with mushroom houses and pink locomotives. It's what you enjoy, none of my layouts ate based on a era or region. Don't ballast track, use ballast mat, roofing felt is good, it's quicker, simpler and more reliable. I would go for a simple oval to watch the trains go round with a couple of sidings for shunting. I aim for a realistic look from a distance, not perfection. I think with a younger child speed of build is important to keep their interest. Get some track down so you can see trains running and then build scenery and buildings. Hi, Mike hope all is well? I've managed to find some time to myself - just thought I'd catch up on your layout. Clever idea using the green scouring pad... cheaper, too. Glad to see the budget ideas still in use. All the best. 👍
Hello! I’ve just found your channel within the past 2 weeks! It’s great learning about all these cheap techniques which are really helpful as I’m looking at getting back into the hobby! :)
Ther are loads of model railway exhibitions on UA-cam, and I'm getting a bit bored with them. Lots of imaculate layouts with exquisite modelling of railway environments. Plus lots of superb ultra-realistic trains running through the scene, having cost a king's ransome. What's missing? Relevence! Relevence to me and people like me, without that king's ransome. The simple pleasure of watching trains seems to be the last consideration. If I want to watch "real" railway scenes, I can watch any number of them on UA-cam (there are plenty of those, too). Modern or vintage is all there. You two build layouts to watch trains, and all without remortgaging you house. I know which approach I prefer - I'm with you!
@@alandavis5950 thanks for the support, much appreciated. Sadly the situation is only getting worse with prices rocketing for new and 2nd hand, and the hunt for perfection at any price continues, we do our best to offer an alternative
Nice update Mike. The hill in the back round works really well at giving a nice effect with the train going past it. And 54 pounds for a Hornby Adams Radial what a bargin!.- Nicholas.
What a wonderful layout Mike ! Can't get over how well the back scenes fit so well and add so much depth to the layout. Truly inspirational. Glad you mentioned that your 2-6-2 adams radial goes round 1st radius . . . will be looking out for one of those as I have a fair bit of 1st radius on mine. I've got the Hogwarts Express 4-6-0 which goes round mine ok. Lovely layout and done so quickly. Well done . . . can't wait to see more !!
Your layout looks superb. It’s good that you focus on budget. Some of the prices now are ridiculous, and I cannot afford. I buy most of my things second hand from a great little Aladdins Cave of a railway shop near me in Ticehurst. I prefer it that way, as it retains the magic that we all felt as children, and I never know what’s going to turn up. All the best !!
Classic Rail at Ticehurst is basically where most of my stuff, even buildings etc came from, it's epic. Sadly the mainstream hobby is now simply about how much money can you throw at it
@@BudgetModelRailways Yes indeed, I agree, and Richard is such a nice fellow. I feel my visits to his shop, I live in Tunbridge Wells, evoke the magic that I felt as a youngster. As I say, I never know what I’ll return with. The prices of most of the new stuff are beyond my pocket, and I seem to watch review after review of brand new models with bits dropping off, or not working properly. I love my trips to Ticehurst. Perhaps I’ll look for some buildings next time I’m there. It’s a lovely drive down there and I’m not always sure Richard will even be open. Even that adds to the magic.
Your spot on with prices now and with that scares about mazak rot on some models,my layout I built in 2004 and instead of building a new one I just keep updating it and it’s just had a major clean and tidy but if I was starting it now the prices of even points, thanks for a great channel and love the layout and as for children my first born is 30 this Wednesday ,all the best and a big big thank you again for your channel
Superb ! Hats off for your hedges, they are very convincing. Your idea of a line in a trench in the background is well thought out, I love it ! I will take it for my works.
Earlier this year I snuck away with one of the last Hornby Adams Radials on Kernow for 69 pounds and I am so glad I did. It's such a great loco with tons of character.
You know damn well there is no such thing as “too many locos” 😜 Those Beattie Well tanks are so very handsome so you have got yourself an absolute bargain! Great to see all the progress too. Love the pillbox (I thought I saw it last time but maybe I saw it somewhere else? 🤔) and the platforms look really interesting so they’ll look terrific when you have covered them. Good idea to leave that access hole as it makes your life easier and I really look forward to the next instalment. Best of luck to Doug and good health to you all 😀 Cheers mate 🍻🍀👍

Fantastic little layout!! It's great to see what can be achieved on a low budet. I think minimum radius generally refers to s bends. Great videos as always 👌
I enjoyed this. The loco seems to fit in nicely with the layout. Its a smasher and what a fair price too. Well done with making the hedges, they do look good. Many thanks.
would be nice to see a video on how you wire up the goods yard. One thing I find tricky with model layouts is the wiring up of kick back sidings, isolating them and all that. Great video loving the small layout makes me want to make a smaller layout than my 6x4 one. would be nice once my main one is finished 🤣
I do almost no planning, I play around with buildings and bits and let the layout suggest itself, like the pond. I work on if it looks right it is right. Currently I am working on the village, I will just keep trying combinations of buildings until it looks right
Sounds really interesting, be good to see some videos etc. We have loads of budget ideas on our channel if that helps. Anything we can do to help just ask. Have fun with it
The layout is looking really good and look forward to seeing it progress. I especially like the station precinct and also the hedge and cutting in front of the back scene, really adds to the illusion of depth. The loco is very good, I have admired them for some time. You mentioned the expense and it is getting worse. The postage from the UK to Australia has gone up even more and makes purchasing stupidly expensive. There are some sellers in Australia who profiteer from this. With the postage much lower within Aus, they inflate the item price to make more money, and it ends up costing almost as much as buying the same item from the UK. Talk about exploitation. Sorry, a rant 😄
Nice video. I particularly like you excellent pan scourer hedges, they're up there with Mouldy Raspberry's cat litter dry stone walls. Amazing what can be done with a bit of imagination and effort.

Wonderful layout. Like the idea of hedges blocking the train without a tunnel 👍

Of All your layouts I think this is becoming my favourite very nice track plan and scenics, what's the dimensions of the baseboard??
Hi , thanks, it's 160x80 cm
I just got back into mine since 2017 the prices have trippled, and that's if it's available
Most of the new Hornby stuff is still awaiting delivery, just about the entire range. Mind you I could never afford the prices
Lovely Jubbly matey.
Just wondering how you've wired it up. Are you going to be able to run trains round the loop and shunt at the same time?
I will be able to once I have out a switch in, but I tend to only run one loco at a time
How would passengers get to the station? A car park and bus option ? Like it....good to see again..
There is a car park in front of the station
I do like this layout

I've been able buy Class 31 and Class 47 Locos from Ebay for around £35 - £40 in the last six months. Plywood is expensive these days, though.

How have you wired/controlling the back sidings as they don't seem to be directly connected to the loop?
Wires hidden under the buffers on both lines and then into the terminal block. I will put a switch in at some point so I can isolate them
£54 for a hornby Adams radial!
