    I really like how you add points in your round about designs that allow you run locos and then have the option to do shunting when the mood hits you.
    Use what you have is not a bad way to go. I have all N gauge track, N scale locos and rolling stock. Moving to 00 or HO would cost me a bit of cash so I’ll take a lesson from you and at the moment be satisfied with building new layouts with what I already have on hand. Cheers!

    Exactly what put me off going back to n.....totally agree with your comments re price!.....space is also a problem for me,but with a bit of tidying and chucking out,I’ve managed to fit a reasonable size oo layout in the garage!....not ideal but not too bad.....looks like you have a bit of spare room for a fiddle yard,or possibly a branch line....I’m sure whatever you decide will be worth looking at !

    Looking at your shed I wondered if you could run the loop around and behind your intended fiddle yard and do the shunting inside the loop or return the loop close to the other line and run your shunting in front. Just a thought. I'm really getting into the idea of a shunting area as well as a folded loop layout. Cheers.

    My opinion is keep with 00 it has far more products, is still reasonably priced, Hornby Railroad Loco's starting around £70 brand new, I prefer second hand myself and have built up quite a collection over the years. My layout is a very modest affair and represents a rural light railway between end of WW2 and the sixties. I have a lot of fun no fancy electrics just two wires, hand operated points(all five of them), and hours of happy fun. Oh and if you still have them, I hope to purchase a couple of those tiny coaches soon. I think I shall have a go at the dieseil body kit this winter. All the best.

    Have you considered doing modular layouts like That Model Railway Guy so you can build and use different modules depending on space and mood. Might give you smaller projects within the bigger project and I think you would create some really great different modules.

    Having seen the completed layout video first,i thought i`d go back to the beginning...Will watch the lot in order.Have given up on the idea of a shed railway now ...basically because of the Months,January/February...!!! ,(Freezing Cold) and the fact my track is steel.It even rusts a bit in the bedroom ! So,have now got a space back up in the bedroom at 7 feet long,and i am negotiating how wide.Four Feet mininum,but i am looking to stretch to 5..5 feet,if Katrina doesn`t notice,..As you know,i am All tri ang ,so similar thinking..Have so much stuff,i have to stick with what i have.I was VERY VERY tempted to dismantle Ten A penny last weekend,but have not done so,and have found a place in the same bedroom,where it can be stored on its side,and the long backscene board,actually used as a shelf for some ornaments,with a cloth on top of it....Can then pull it out,and put it on the bed,when i wish to use it..After all the work went into it,decided it was too hard to cut the layout up,plus it can be used again to display somewhere in the future.....Love this hobby..

    Hi Mike.
    My late cousin used to have a nice TT layout that gauge wise, sits in between 'N' and 'OO'. It would be perfect for you space wise, but I don't seem to see TT rolling stock being advertised these days. Just thought I'd mention that as a possible option. Keep up the good work for us cramped enthusiasts. 👍

  • @johnhindson5316
    @johnhindson5316 3 роки тому +1

    Belated response! Firstly, whilst I think the yard looks good in the video I wonder whether the kick back siding would work well in practice? Anything at he Provender store and probably in the coal yard would need moving to gain access. This might help to provide operator interest but might also become a faff. Perhaps you could get a siding off the loop (between the Deltic and the 4F) for a Cattle Dock which would then be accessible from the road? Secondly, I agree about the lack of reasonably priced locos in N. Years ago I read a quote about car building - “any engineer can build a great big car, it takes a genius to build a great small car”. I can’t help feeling it would be interesting if one of the companies who release the latest and greatest model with a detailed under frame that no one sees or working valve gear between the frames ( which no one sees) set their engineering skills to creating the cheapest loco they could which could be part of a set to get children started in N gauge. A child (and me!) doesn’t need a super detailed model - moulded on hand rails are good . They just need a basic model to fre their imagination.

    Nice, like some of your smaller layouts, currently doing one 920mm x 920mm after getting ideas from you, went from n to oo for the same reasons, also found servicing n locos too fiddly as i got older.

  • @OlivierGabin
    @OlivierGabin 3 роки тому +1

    Your trackplan is interesting. I am considering a basic oval layout with removable buildings to be able to do either OO or HO depending on the mood (I model both scale, plus japanese N !) and I find your overall track pattern very smart.
    For N, I had modelled UK N for a while, but I had dropped due to reliability issues. Overall, HO or OO are not far away from N in terms of price, and I fancy the reliability and the possibility to do shunting/reversinf operations over having more things with the same footprint. It's more easy to manually uncouple in OO/HO than in N. It's noticeable with standard OO couplers, and I use Roco Universal ones either in OO and HO due to the combination of overall reliability, cheaper price than the Kadees, and possibility to uncouple manually everywhere with an inexpensive tool. Roco sells their plastic uncoupling paddle in their 50 couplings box, but a simple ice cream wood stick does the job too. Drawback : requires NEM couplers boxes or fiddling to put some on second hand models not having them...
    I hope I will finish the track of my "experimental" station this weekend, carboard base and Peco Setrack... Anyway, thanks for the videos. See you on the next one !

    If you are modelling on a budget, N is pretty much out of the question. I returned to railway modelling when I retired a couple of years ago. State pension and not much else. I considered N because of available space but the prices, even of secondhand stuff, put it out of my reach. I managed to build up a decent collection of OO rolling stock through eBay (before the prices went silly) and some very decent continental HO stuff too which I can run on the same track. I've seen some lovely N gauge layouts but if you opt for N I think you'll soon get frustrated.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 роки тому +1

      Sadly you are correct. The Peco N wagon kits are really cheap, the Kestrel N buildings are cheap, so far so good. Coaches are a bit pricey but ok. UK outline locomotives, just forget it. £50 for an old GF that won't run slowly or across points etc , £80+ for any kind of large diesel even second hand. I bought one Dapol 14x for £60 just so I could run something on my N shunting layout other than my freelance diesel on a Kato chassis. So that's the end of UK N, which is a shame as the scope for a scenic vista is so tempting. As you say frustrating.

  • @GosportRailworks

    Just wondering, fancy a old Poole Farish 4F at all? Was going to use it for a kit build but it's surplus to requirements now. Does run though could do with a service. Can also throw in some extra loco bodies as well (various engines). Unsure of price but if interested do let me know.
    As for cheaper N Gauge engines, you can find the occasional one here and there, have seen a Farish Castle for £50, a couple of Jintys for around £45, but yeah it's not great, do keep an eye on Lima and Minitrix items as they can be more affordable, a 2MT for £45ish for example.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks 3 роки тому

      @@BudgetModelRailways I find the newer Farish stuff to run quite well, but they do cost an arm and a leg, Dapol are more affordable but their steam engines are sometimes iffy (though not stopped me buying them).
      For a good price and good runners there is also Union Mills, is a one man band and not everything is in at the time and detail is on the low side but they put both Farish and Dapol to shame in pulling power.

    I guess it’s where I am lucky living in Canada with a huge finished basement where space is not an issue and heat and cold are fully controlled. I used to have an N scale and there is much to recommended about it until you start making buildings which have such small parts. I now have HO and it’s okay,I thought it would be better,I might go back to N Scale but if I do it will have to be a North American layout as importing locos,running stock and buildings is just too expensive.

      @@railthefox1857 1st radius is 1st radius regardless of make, it's a standard. This is Hornby. The Lima straights are between Hornby short and double straights lengthwise.

    Have you ever considered tt gauge?

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 роки тому

      In my view it's the ideal gauge. However UK outline is extremely limited, being just a few very old Triang models and the European stuff is hard to get and very expensive

    I model in N but have to agree the price has become excessive almost like it is intent on committing suicide I for one have come to the conclusion my progress will be very slow now, but thankfully it is mainly scenic work left to do

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 роки тому +1

      I love the scenic possibilities esp how much infrastructure you can get in. But with even second hand diesels fetching double OO prices £100+ I just can't justify or afford the locos. It's such a shame when the Peco rolling stock kits and kestrel buildings are so cheap in N

    @Andy001z 3 роки тому +1

    Well there we have it, the word from budget model railways is ngauge isn't budget. Shame but understand your reasoning.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 роки тому

      The buildings and rolling stock are very budget using Kestrel and Peco, the locos are a different matter, at least compared to OO
