Conan isn't wrong, don't know why he gets such a hard time about the Taurus! It had a 220HP Yamaha made V6, and with a manual transmission they were a blast to drive. They are still desirable today.
They were legit. My pops had a similar kind of thing, an early 90’s Dodge Spirit RT, 224hp, 0-60 in under 6 seconds, but looked like something my Grandma would drive. For context, the BMW M5 of that generation did 0-60 in 6.3 seconds (but looked infinitely cooler doing it). I think Ford still makes a hot Taurus, the police interceptors if nothing else. All the Dodge models these days look like muscle cars, so they don’t have any of those “sleeper” models anymore.
They (Conan's generation SHO) looked not just ugly they were invisible, the kind of front wheel drive car any drone that works their entire life making some other people's dreams come true would drive. Yamaha engine and Mazda transmission - and almost double cost of regular Taurus? Still it had a long run a few generations.
It says a lot about Conan that he got that car. As many in the comments have pointed out, the Taurus SHO had an incredible engine that performed on par with the best sedans of the time. However, on the outside it looked like a regular midrange sedan, and especially in that color. So Conan wanted the performance but without the flashy looks, and that pretty much sums him up - humble on the outside, beast on the inside.
I own several SHOs. Gen1 and Gen2. We race them in a series called "24 Hours of Lemons" ! That engine still cooks, baby! If you ever wanna come and race with us and relive your days of rowing gears: be our guest!
My mom bought a 1996 green Taurus SHO when I was a toddler and to this day she says it was her favourite car shes ever owned. "It was an absolute joy to drive" in her words. Conan has good taste
The Ford Taurus SHO was definitely one of those "if you know, you know" vehicles. I was super bummed they discontinued it. The final 2019 model had an F-150 V6 engine in it and it was a dream to drive; refined, comfortable, and responsive to drive, but gobs of power when you put the pedal down.
Also, we need a Not Necessarily The News (NNTN) full deep dive episode - maybe a cast reunion? I was born in ‘76 and remember seeing NNTN and loving it. It was among the foundational comedy of the 80s for us along side Airplane!, Mel Brooks, Monty Python, etc…

The Acura Legend and Taurus SHO are both cool cars! The Legend had a longitudinal V6 FWD layout and the SHO had the Yamaha V6 as many have pointed out.
i'm so glad conan still owns the taurus sho. well, team coco does, but still. last i heard of it, brad pitt roasted the clutch for a bit, and it's been sitting since. conan needs to get a new clutch put in, some detailing, and he's a better car guy than leno XD
Love that Lisa has finally been on your podcast, you two are awesome and so cute together. Lisa has the best laugh ever, hilarious about the Ford Taurus, the friends cast members and their cars 🤍 😍😘🥰🤩✨🌟🎙️😆😂🤣 🎧 🚘
I'm surprised Sona didn't bring up the fact that Conan not only still owns the car, he keeps up the registration and insurance payments on it. Has Conan ever explained why, even though he was living in Los Angeles at the time, he went all the way to Massachusetts to buy a car?
The very first time I saw Conan was very late at night in Ireland where his show but we shown on UK TV ( Super Channel ?) that we could pick up in Ireland. He was in Rockerfeller Plaze with this old car, getting the senior auctioneer from Sotheby's to value his Ford Taurus. I thought "what is this weirdo who doesn't seem to care about anything but making us laugh". So the Ford Taurus is what got me hooked on Conan. And now, I guess nearly 30 years later, the Taurus lives on in conversations. ( I remember being disappointed when Conan did his series on settling into LA and he was driving a BMW SUV and the myth that he still drove the Taurus was finally skewered )
1976-79 Buick Opel by Isuzu, Conan could not have found a more concocted car. That’s three different names, three different car companies, and three different countries of origin.
Both Conan and Lisa got my respect. Both Taurus SHO and particulary the Acura Legend, are total legends from that era(i know😁). Theyre great cars in their own right. Like the Acura, it may not have a well known logo as it was particularly up and coming brand at the time, but it really gave the germans a run for their money. I really hope they realize that. Those are kind of cars actual smart people buy.
There wasn't a v8 for the sho. The mustang v8 was only had more 5hp and 0 to 60 was a .3 second difference. About even in a race until 95mph when the sho would pull ahead due to aerodynamics
Conan, I feel you with the discomfort when the blood pressure cuff is deflating. It goes so slowly and you focus on the area, noticing your arm throbbing. I have felt this my whole life and have normal blood pressure.
A friend of mine had an SHO and it was a very cool car. One thing it had was a red line limiter that would stop the engine if you went over a certain RPM. I was driving it once and and revved it too high and it quit. I was freaking out until it started back up again. I was wondering how I could tell my friend, I destroyed his car.

And you had to have a manual, most automatics at the time were shitty slush boxes. Perfect car for a successful writer at the time (Conan was working on the Simpsons I think when he got it).

Ok true story, my college friend had the original 1986 Ford Taurus which was of course a hand me down from his parents. That car went through transmissions like crazy. One time I was visiting him in the bay area and we were in rush hour traffic when all of a sudden the car started to shudder really bad and wouldn't move. Yup, the transmission went out. The Taurus SHO was pretty good. His 1992 Taurus SHO could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph.
