Very nice, can you hear the bov from inside the car? I have, no joke, the same setup minus the intake and I heard it does bring out the turbo noises by going stage 1+.
Sounds awesome! Is there any way you could do a video with sound from the cabin? I'm debating on doing the same set-up with my 2015 STI, but I'd like to know what it sounds like for the driver.
Awesome man, nice to see a new driving vid, and what a beautiful day! My STi is arriving soon...I've been chillin for awhile, but now that I got the ETA, starting to get really excited...just joined IWSTI too :)
Joe! I picked up my STI today. I'm totally in love, and I will not be able to sleep tonight. I got a crystal black limited STI. As for modifying, do you suggest ordering the perrin AOS right away?
With a mod list consisting of Cobb intake, Cobb downpipe, Cobb catback and AP Pro Tune is that basically stage 2? Are other supporting mods required such as injectors, fuel pump, EBCS or a EWG?
Stages are sales marketing stunts but according to Cobb, a downpipe is considered stage 2. An intake with a downpipe is stage 2+ so it's confusing. You can install an upgraded fuel pump with stage 2 but depending on what fuel or how much power you are aiming for, injectors may or may not be an option. However if you do choose to get injectors for insurance, you can get 850cc injectors because they're the next step above stock (560cc). EBCS and EWG are no stage options and are just for extra response and if higher boost above stock us run.
The OEM midpipe is about 2.5" so you figure having a 3"downpipe to a 2.5" midpipe, to 2.25" axlebacks will still be a good setup that tapers down gradually. Nothing wrong with it. However, more top end power can be extracted with a larger diameter midpipe and a good tune.
OCTurboJoe thanks for the info! also one more question, do you think your 3.5" tips fill your bumper gap sufficiently? I'm considering 4" tips to have a more "filled up" look but i don't want it to melt the bumper
DarkGreenTuber I think 3.5" is enough. 4" won't burn the bumper but it's too big for my taste, that's why I went with 3.5". 4" quads are a cop magnet where I live and it's bad enough that Subies with aftermarket exhausts are already loud to begin with.
So what is the difference between having a cattback, intake and stage 1 map - or a cattback, intake and stage 1 map with a protune? Im getting a Nameless cattback installed in two days and am considering going stage 1 after. Also on Perrins website for their AOS, they claim its for offroad use only in CA. Does that upgrade screw up any emissions tests or anything of that sort? Is the stock AOS not strong enough after going Stage 1?
Daniel Chamoun A downloadable OTS map is designed to work for everyone however it's not custom tuned to your car based on where you live, ie fuel quality, elevation, barometric pressure, etc. As for the AOS, it affects emissions if you delete the PCV completely or vent to atmosphere. In Perrin's case, all it is doing is catching the oil prior to entering the intake while still being a closed loop system like the OEM setup.
Stage 2 requires a downpipe (or J-pipe) to go stage 2 with a Cobb AP. An intake and catback exhaust will still be considered stage 1+, however it's important you use Cobb's CAI when flashing with the AP as their maps only support their parts unless you get it protuned.
Hey Joe, i wanted to know if the Cobb stage 1+sf OTS tune is a reliable tune. I’m not looking for big numbers I want a conservative tune and just the BPV sound
+OCTurboJoe another noob question, if I was going to do all those mods... Does a dyno tune need an accessport, or can they just do the tune with out one? Thanks!
+stephandoan There's open source tuning where you buy a Tactrix cable and connect to a laptop with Ecutek software for example. However you need the laptop connected to monitor anything. With the Cobb AP, it plugs directly to your OBD II port and has up to 6 gauges to monitor hundreds of parameters. Most tuners will pick up on the AP easily, plus it has the ability for you to flash temporary email tunes in order for you to safely drive to the dyno for further tuning.
Nice sound. I just ordered a catback for my sti. Do you think a adapter is needed to connect the catback to the stock downpipe? Did you use an adapter or just bolt on with the gasket that came with the exhaust? Thx!
I would suggest a Grimmspeed OEM downpipe to 3in catback adapter flange to go with this. I sandwiched both stock and Nameless donut gaskets together, which is what I believe they wanted you to do but I'm going to be adding the Grimmspeed flange to do it correctly.
im a noob when it comes to car so uhh if you purchase a turbo back bundle by nameless performance does it come with a catted j-pipe?? or you have to purchase that one?
Oh lucky you Joe you get to drive a brand new STI. I want one but, I cannot afford it. I'll just keep on looking for a used EVO on craigslist. I live Ewa side by the way. Kolowaka.
Robert Ocampo Right on, neighbor!! I've been waiting for the perfect one throughout the years. I wasn't too happy with the '04-14 STI's. It didn't appeal to me like the GC did. This model handles better than all the previous generations, even better than the GC. I don't really don't care that it carried the same motor over, I was actually happy because I knew how to work on them and there's lots of aftermarket support. Hope to see you around. Don't be afraid to say howzit!! ;)
it's not because Evo is a bad car. Price range of 40k, no one would buy it. That goes same for STI. Subaru WRX is almost sold out everywhere but STI sales are still bad. With 40k price range, no one would buy it.
Shawn Tay I beg to differ. 2015 STIs have gone up 40% from the last model year and both WRX/STI sales increased nearly 80% altogether. Other than the engine/transmission remaining the same, alot of changes in interior and handling is what sets it apart from the Evo. The 2015 STI's price also remained unchanged (sub-$40K price tag) and gained roughly 2lbs in weight, while still outperforming the previous model.
+OCTurboJoe Nice. I factory ordered 16 CWP STI. Should be coming in last week of December. Definitely going with nameless. Still debating between 4" or 5" muffler. Is the 5" loud? Any drones? I like your setup by the way
+Brian Baek Not loud at first but it got to me (the rumble). I switched to an equal length header and it's the perfect sound for my ears, plus more power.
Radar is useless in Oahu, Hawaii because the cops use laser. If we use laser jammers, they'll still try to catch us to investigate why their laser guns were jammed. We either drive normal or don't get caught at the wrong time.
OCTurboJoe Ah, that's a bummer! I have heard dealing with laser is much harder. Luckily where I live, in Vermont, and most of New England really, all of the police still seem to be using the same old radar systems, and even a really cheap detector can work well enough to save you a ticket. I don't usually drive like a maniac, but there have been several times where I was just getting into a town or something and hadn't slowed down enough, and my detector definitely reminded me I needed to. Paid for itself in one detection, many times over. :D
I have the exact same setup on my STI. Only difference is that I don't have the midpipe. Did you buy them together? I was wondering how much of a difference for sound/performance do you see with the midpipe. Might hold off on it until I get the downpipe. Awesome Vid BTW!
I bought the catback as a whole. Not much different over stuck until it was protuned. But yeah, if you already got just the axlebacks, hold off on the midpipe until you get the downpipe and tune.
OCTurboJoe Thanks! How big of a difference has the protune been? I am currently running the Cobb Stage 1+. You planning on going stage 2? I heard you have to upgrade the fuel pump and injectors.
Lifeispeachyatt It's a world's difference over the OTS. I definitely feel torque sooner in the mid range and it pulls harder up top. I gained 24whp/34wtq from the protune and it's noticeable. The powerband doesn't fall flat on it's face after 6K like it used to. I don't plan on going stage 2+ soon but when I do, I may consider getting a Tomei header/uppipe/downpipe combo as the ELH sound is growing on me. If you're not planning on using E85 with stage 2+, the only fuel mod I would suggest getting is the fuel stumble fix kit and upgraded fuel pump. The only time I would upgrade to higher flow injectors is if you're using E85 or a bolting on a bigger turbo. Stock injectors should be fine on pump gas.
Beautiful sti u got there :) I had a 06 sti had it for 6 years and I regret selling it but hopefully wen I'm done paying off my 13 Honda si this year I'm goin to sell it n get me a 2015 sti :D
It's cuz I don't really do racing n stuff in track, I just always wanted a Subaru n here I am got one and the only thing I did with it is corsa exhaust, and it's my daily drive car too
shahin00751 No sense doing it if you don't need it and daily driving is all you do. The car itself is already a blast to drive. Installing a catback will not require a tune if you want improved sound.
i bought cobb sf intake and accessport for my 2015 sti and it made the same horrible hissing whirring noise. drove me nuts - doesn't sound powerful at all, more like a cheap broken vacuum cleaner or junk air hose stuck under the hood. everyone kept asking what was wrong with the car (so did i - and 'no' it was not a boost leak). made it so i couldn't stand using the gas pedal. needless to say i removed it after a week and sold both.
Thats the sound a turbo makes bro, thats the point of having an intake and a tune. Lol, i think you may have dome something wrong. But watch some videos or read some forums before you modify your car lol
I wish this weather could stay like this too. 66° lows and 81° highs, normally it's 75° lows and 94° highs. Currently perfect boost weather, not too hot or cold.
Very nice, can you hear the bov from inside the car? I have, no joke, the same setup minus the intake and I heard it does bring out the turbo noises by going stage 1+.
Yes. Totally enhanced the sound.
Oh man I can't wait. my COBB SF intake and accessport shows up tomorrow. your car sounds amazing. very good video.
Thanks. Have fun.
Sounds awesome! Is there any way you could do a video with sound from the cabin? I'm debating on doing the same set-up with my 2015 STI, but I'd like to know what it sounds like for the driver.
that sound of the bypass valve stock? just the cobb tune/intake/deletes??? sounds so goood lol
Awesome man, nice to see a new driving vid, and what a beautiful day! My STi is arriving soon...I've been chillin for awhile, but now that I got the ETA, starting to get really excited...just joined IWSTI too :)
Congrats!!
OCTurboJoe Thanks man, love that mechanical sound coming from the engine bay! Visceral...
Joe! I picked up my STI today. I'm totally in love, and I will not be able to sleep tonight. I got a crystal black limited STI. As for modifying, do you suggest ordering the perrin AOS right away?
Congrats!! Totally up to you. I installed mine at 400 miles.
Yup, im excited to add the intake to my setup now lol

Is this the cobb intake with the air box that they came out with
This is my own airbox, built from Kydex. Cobb's just released theirs early this month. They somewhat borrowed my design to build their new airbox.
Hey like the Vid...can you make a list of all your mod tanx in advance
They're listed in the video description.
how restrictive is the stock midpipe? I would like to keep that and just swap out the dp and axle back. thanks

OCTurboJoe alright thanks again. I enjoy your car and computer vids keep them coming!
DarkGreenTuber No prob. Thanks for watching.
Great video man, Really like the external mic in the engine bay.
Thanks!!
So if all you have is exhaust. Will you need to get the access poet as well as the sf intake? ( I am not sure what up or dp I have on my 03 wrx.
So what is the difference between having a cattback, intake and stage 1 map - or a cattback, intake and stage 1 map with a protune? nice sti bro, hey i got 2016 wrx im wondering if i get nameless CBE + intake can i go stage 2 upgrade on AP?

Hey Joe, i wanted to know if the Cobb stage 1+sf OTS tune is a reliable tune. I’m not looking for big numbers I want a conservative tune and just the BPV sound
Subielove4ev I suggest getting it protuned, even with the Accessport.
OCTurboJoe if you still have the sti you should post a video up
Subielove4ev Still got it. Will be posting soon...
dose it have a bov or stock bypass
do I need an access port with an aftermarket exhaust and no other mods?
Not required for a catback. But intake, header, downpipe requires tuning.
+OCTurboJoe another noob question, if I was going to do all those mods... Does a dyno tune need an accessport, or can they just do the tune with out one?

damn that sounds nice! so turbo and bov are stock right? and would it be satusfying enough if i only have the sti performance exhaust with this setup?
Sounds perfect. Enjoy your ride!
Thanks!!
Nice sound. I just ordered a catback for my sti. Do you think a adapter is needed to connect the catback to the stock downpipe? Did you use an adapter or just bolt on with the gasket that came with the exhaust? Thx!

did the car become smoother, easier to drive so to say, with stage 1 over stock? did you ever run the OTS maps?
im a noob when it comes to car so uhh if you purchase a turbo back bundle by nameless performance does it come with a catted j-pipe?? or you have to purchase that one?
This is an STI so it would be the same as buying a turboback exhaust which includes a downpipe/j-pipe.
Is the nameless delete or with muffler?
Joe, just wondering. Did you get the nameless exhaust bundle that comes with a down-pipe and accessport? If so your at 2+ then?
No. I bought just the catback and AP together from Nameless. They sold the AP for $50 less than retail at the time.
How much is the 2015 STI out the door? No down, no trade in?
It was about $38K out the door for my base STI. No markups either, just destination fees and taxes.
Oh lucky you Joe you get to drive a brand new STI. I want one but, I cannot afford it. I'll just keep on looking for a used EVO on craigslist. I live Ewa side by the way. Kolowaka.

you're just using the 93 oct stage 1 + sf tune?
No, it's actually been protuned.
One person is mad Mitsubishi is no longer manufacturing the EVO
Nah, I think one person is scared of spooling turbos and loud exhausts.
it's not because Evo is a bad car. Price range of 40k, no one would buy it. That goes same for STI. Subaru WRX is almost sold out everywhere but STI sales are still bad. With 40k price range, no one would buy it.

Lolwut? Not hating on Evos, and how did you even get on to WRX vs STI from this video/comment?
OCTurboJoe only 25k units of wrx/sti are sold in u.s. all combined. the clear winner goes to wrx. sti was not even quarter of 25k sales.
Did you get double wall or single wall for the tips? And also staggered or non staggered?
Double wall, staggered.
+OCTurboJoe

I'm amazed with a car like this, you don't have a nice radar detector to go with your spidey senses. ;)
Radar is useless in Oahu, Hawaii because the cops use laser. If we use laser jammers, they'll still try to catch us to investigate why their laser guns were jammed. We either drive normal or don't get caught at the wrong time.

Is this in Utah? Beautiful scenery
This is Oahu, Hawaii.
wow. sounds soooo sick!
must be fun to drive.
good work.
your car is amazing.
Thanks!!
Very nice. Just want to ask, did you have a blow-off value or it's the sound that intake making?
Thanks, it's the Cobb intake filter allowing the bypass valve to produce those sounds.
Nice car! I'm pushing 40. What's the insurance you pay for a car like this?
Thanks. I'm not very far behind you, lol. Insurance is about nearly $400 because the bros and youngins always speed and crash them.
OCTurboJoe 400 seems kind of low. Did you mean 1400?
Haha no, $400.
Wow, I'm paying a lot for insurance then. I live in L.A.. That may have something to do with it. Thanks!
OCTurboJoe $400 a month?! Sheesh. Mine is about $212 and I think that's high
Sounds nice, idk sometimes I think to tune my car n sometimes I be saying I'll keep it as is
If you're unsure, stay stock.

OCTurboJoe k
Nice commute!!!!
do you have any tune on this car joe?
Yup. Stage 1+ protuned.
i bought cobb sf intake and accessport for my 2015 sti and it made the same horrible hissing whirring noise. drove me nuts - doesn't sound powerful at all, more like a cheap broken vacuum cleaner or junk air hose stuck under the hood. everyone kept asking what was wrong with the car (so did i - and 'no' it was not a boost leak). made it so i couldn't stand using the gas pedal. needless to say i removed it after a week and sold both.

Do you have a downpipe??
Matt Amyot Yes, all EJ257s come with downpipes. In my case, its still stock. I'm not in a rush to get one.
This is great, super, excellent!
Thanks!!
did u have to retune ???
I did. But in this video, I had a temporary, custom email tune to drive and enjoy the car. It was very conservative.
Jealousssssss, Man I want this weather in alaska! Btw great video!
I wish this weather could stay like this too. 66° lows and 81° highs, normally it's 75° lows and 94° highs. Currently perfect boost weather, not too hot or cold.
How much horsepowers?
Check the description, and my other vids. ;)
stock BOV?
Yes sir. The SF intake opens up the noise when the BPV dumps air back into the turbo inlet.
thanks, nice car and video by the way.!
Travis Castro Thanks!!
this gets a like just because you did that at the end lol
Lol
Look like it’s in ewa beach this place huh! Btw it’s sounds good tho
CWP FTW!
You know it!!
Nice Video. Have now ordered. :'D
Awesome
Holly balls your car sounds way nice... I need that nameless exhaust lol. So much pshh n woooosh n rumble
