  • In a recent video I showed an overview of audio mastering for an album using some of my favorite fx. Several people wanted to see this done with stock REAPER FX so that's what this video is about.
    And you can get great results mixing and mastering with just the plugins included with REAPER.
    How to use Reaper fx for audio mastering, including Loudness Metering, Multiband Compression, Limiting, Clipping and even stereo width adjustment with a Mid-Side encoding.

    Jon- there is a stock JS effect called JS: Stereo Enhancer that you can use to center bass frequencies if you can't use Ozone.

      Right on. JS: Stereo Enhancer is a go-to for me to focus the low end. Haven’t used it on the master bus but interested to see (hear) the difference between this and the method used here.

      Your comment here saved me because I have been using Ozone’s EQ to the mid-side thing for this purpose while mastering. So happy you brought attention to the Stereo Enhancer for me. Thank you!

    Just another reason why Reaper is a great "bang for the buck." It's an amazingly capable platform with ever expanding applications. Nice presentation! Should do more of these demoing the stock plugins. There are so many, I don't have time for them all.

    Being new to mixing and on reaper, I’m learning that I also need to build some mastering skills in order attract clients in my smaller market and online. Being able to start learning with stock/free plug-ins is really helpful. Thank you for this!

    That nova EQ you showed us a few weeks back is amazing. I use it every day now. You could always do a lil Nova EQ tutorial, that might be nice, it is free too.

    Hadn't noticed the new ReaLimit! I'm sure tons of people will be delighted that there is a dedicated stock limiter now. The stock JS ones are okay, but I think a lot of people get turned off by the fact that there's no fancy graphs. There's no oversampling or true peak options in any of them either, which this one seems to have.

    There's a JS Image plugin that'll do all the stereo tricks. You can adjust the filter cut-off and designate to what extent the lows will be taken from the side etc.

    The problem with Ozone plugins is they are resource intensive. Thanks for showing mastering with the Reaper plugins which are not resource intensive.

    Although Ozone's Imager is free, does anyone know if it's it's worth getting if I already have Ozone 5? I know Ozone 5 is old, but it's done me well through the years and I'm curious if I really ought to be using the newer version.

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog  2 роки тому +1

      I also used ozone 5 for many years but without upgrading I couldn’t use it on newer MacOS. In some ways I prefer v5. The imager should be the same in 5

    I usually put some mastering in when I'm composing. I flip it off to adjust the tracks, but flip it back on when I'm writing music. Is this typical?

    • @SamiJumppanen
      @SamiJumppanen Рік тому +1

      For adjusting tracks it sounds good to turn off mastering. But beyond that, as I understand, there are two schools:
      1) mix first, then master
      2) have mastering, even if it's not final, during your session(s). I believed that the first option is the most logical and correct one. At least it will put the effort into mixing and you're most likely learning more on the mixing details which is a really good thing.
      Then one day I heard things that made me feel like I've lived in parallel universe: huh, you can really have the mastering setup on while working on the music? Apparently so! "Adjusting the tracks" I take like "mixing". Some things can be difficult to adjust with mastering, but most of the time the mastering chain enabled can give you different perspective, and it can be really really helpful when you're not producing alone. Don't have to explain the process details and the partner(s) can focus to listening the musical aspects and not get stuck to "this is not loud or bright enough".
      I can't say how typical your method is, but it's good when it works for you. The bottom line for producing alone from start to finish... I'd condense to knowing everything. When you know both mixing and mastering, you can decide.

    I think I have a problem: the function SWS/S&M: Move selected FX up in chain for selected tracks, SWS/S&M: Move selected FX down in chain for selected tracks, used to work for me. I do not know if I changed something, but it suddenly stopd working. Any thoughts of what it could be?

  • @ricosgruv4099

    I'm a bit late to the party, but why would you limit first instead of just lowering the level of the track into your master bus? I've been trained to want peaks into my mastering bus to be -3db or less.
    Edit: ok, I think I understand why that's not as important with your electronic music samples. Dropped in mostly to get a clue about doing mid-side with reaper plugins only, thank you.

  • @justinmacleod7633
    @justinmacleod7633 2 роки тому +1

    So sorry for the stupid question, but I'm totally blind and got a bit confused on this aspect of the process. Were there two limiters in series? The event horizon and Realimit? How come one limiter isn't enough and which one was last in the chain? Which is doing most of the gain reduction? Thanks for taking the time to do the video and for any clarification.

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog  2 роки тому +2

      Not sure of the exact amount of gain reduction but Event Horizon was reducing the drum hits a few dB before ReaLimit which could work more effectively on everything without being triggered so much by the drums and pumping everything.
