You’re wrong about the active denial weapon. The sunburn effect was the weapon dialed to the lowest setting. The weapon can fry and vaporize people instantly
Actually, if I remember correctly, Project X-Ray (the bat bombs) were proven to be highly effective, more effective then they anticipated as they set blaze to an Army Air Base in New Mexico. In theory and operation they worked, and the technical aspects were being worked out for the bomb's mass production. Bomb production was greenlighted for a raid on Japan which probably would have been very deadly. However, at the time the Bat Bombs were being primed for combat, the nuclear bomb took top priority, and many Japanese cities have already been firebombed by General Curtis Lemay (about 66) who led the firebombing campaign over Japan. However, Bomber Command now needed untouched cities to test the effects of the nuclear bombs, and the number of remaining cities that met requirements were very limited. Thus between the extensive firebombing of Japan and preparation for a nuclear strike expected to end the War, the need for a bat bomb was overtaken by events and weapons of a higher priority. I would NOT consider them a "failed weapon."

Bro they have over 5,000 videos wtf kind of a question is that. They get things wrong pretty often, but they share knowledge with us that we may not have learned about. The comments will fact check them really hard, too. Just don't take everything in the video as 100% accurate and pay equally close attention to the criticisms.

5:55 the rotabuggy did NOT fly it was a propeller kite concept, the propellers served as kind of like a spining parachute that would slow the vehicle's decent, the wings and the propellers were supposed to be detachable, it was not meant to be some early helicopter. yeah, like the pikecrete aircraft carrier not being designed from the ground up with tubes through the pikecrtete and then saying it was dumped for reasons other than the end of WWII and even then the increase in medium range bombers is insane. The worst was saying it was melting too fast after launch, it took about three years to melt after the cooling was switched off with the project being abandoned, there is no eveidence of melting while the project was being ran.

Lots of false info these days. It's even more obvious when it's a topic you actually know lots about.
Fun fact: Project Habbakuk didn't actually fail, it just wasn't cost-effective. The model that they built on Patricia Lake, in Jasper, Alberta, Canada, actually worked (it floated), and took an entire summer to melt to the point of sinking. The wreckage was rediscovered in 1985, and has since become a popular diving attraction.
Pykrete wouldn't work due to the fact of ice does melt and when ice melts in wood the moisture of the melting in any type of air conditioning or not would soften wood and making you heavier increasing your chance of sinking or crashing(pykrete aircraft)

Actually the GyroJet gun itself didn't have many complex moving parts. In fact it was a lot simpler than a typical self-loading firearm. The malfunctions were caused by the projectiles themselves.
Forgotten Weapons and Taofledermaus made videos showcasing this unusual firearm (the latter even got to shoot it).
It also do not have recoil at all and realy Light.
They were correct though with the useless at close range due to them accelerating slowly after firing.
Yes. The biggest issue with the system was accuracy. As taofledermaus and Forgotten Weapons showed, the rockets were extremely inaccurate.

The Sturmgewehr 44 wasn't a machine gun it was an assault rifle, the first one in masses produced and inspiration for the ak-47 later.
That is actually a common myth because the STG and AK look alike.
The AK is basically an upside down M1 Garand believe it or not. Brandon Herrera has a great video on the subject and I highly recommend it as it gives people a great view onto both the STG and AK.

@@prussia1557 It’s not actually a myth, while the engineering wasn’t taken from the Sturmgewehr. The overall look, ergonomics and mid size cartridge utility of the STG were taken for the AK. It was an inspiration, but not reverse engineered
Strumgewehr literally means assault rifle in German, it's the reason we even all these guns assault rifles in the first place.

Dale Brown has a series of books where they tested and perfected Tin Man armour, handheld rail guns, and even plane based lasers. All of which took place at the research and testing facility called Dreamland, which is actually a real place

In all fairness, the "tailsitter" could make a comeback. After all, when used for point-to-point earthbound trips, that's almost exactly what Spacex's Starship is.
The Brits also used war balloons and were more successful. Some of the balloons carried metal wires that destroyed enemy powerlines or carried bombs that detonated over Germany. The balloons were phased out toward the end of the war, likely because of the whole "Having troops and equipment in the area" thing. Unfortunately, some of the balloons did manage to go off course and managed to do damage in more neutral countries.

The laser cannon doesn't seem like a failed weapon. Just with the current technology it isn't practical. Like with the vertical takeoff aircraft. All the research is done, just need a better power source and it can be put on the frontlines rapidly.
I feel like they just put one of those on a Bzvy ship instead. They didn’t say it didn’t work, just that it was too heavy. Perfect for the ocean 👌
Laser guns will be our best defense against fast moving projectiles that can't be shot down with modern ballistics. like the supersonic missiles and CWIS we see in militaries around the world.
A couple years ago they introduced a ship-mounted on that does work.
Vertical take off aircraft have been used for decades now? Harrier and Osprey are both VTOL aircraft that have been used in combat many times. The harrier was in production for nearly 40 years before being retired, and the Osprey was under development in the late 20th century before being put into production in 2007
So many factually wrong comments on top... It's ridiculous. Laser weaponry is already there - look up russian Peresvet. US Army and Israel alraedy have working laser weapons. Many other countries are "working on" their own laser weapon projects.
Some of these weapons seem like they would be more at home in Metal Slug than in real life.

Interestingly, the laser research from the plane mounted ball turret worked out for the US Navy and Army who made anti-aircraft turrets that were mounted on ships or could be towed as a trailer behind a HMMWV and set up with a generator. In principle, it works, it just requires power which the powerplant of a naval vessel can provide.

Most of these things happen because of cumbersome bureaucracies with "Discretionary Funds." Also, and who would have guessed, when you threaten people with annihilation they sometimes get a little crazy... Most of these things make a little sense, conceptually, except the flaming pigs and the explosive balloons- those were pretty dumb.
Flaming pigs made a lot of sense - considering how inferior the roman arsenal was versus elephants. They tried everything not to lose miserably, but alas, they had no archimedes or daedalus.
@@mindlessfun4804 I think they would have fared better if they had used a crude harness, flaming bundles and had the pigs shored on the rear and sides to focus them at bit more at the enemy. As implemented, they damaged their own front line. It made for a good story though. I can picture some Legionnaire recounting that day to his Nieces and Nephews...

When building houses in Canada, often in winter there is ice buildup on the floor that we have to scrape off to stop slipping. But often there is a lot of sawdust mixed in with it and those spots can NOT be scraped off. The Pykrete ice is much, much harder that regular ice, as well as been slower to melt. That's why he thought it might be a feasible idea.

The Germans had made the most advances in the flying wing, but arguably its biggest flaw was its rather extreme stall instability. It was prone to not recovering from a stall - otherwise, it was quite the effective platform and was already showing its potential for long-range high-payload bombers. The US was not far behind in developing their own flying wing, with Northrop handling it with every major prototype, but they ran into those same unrecoverable stall problems, and it got worse when propellers were swapped for jets. Because of the continuing problem regarding stalls, they shelved the design until new technology could be developed to solve the problem, and that tech was what got implemented in the B-2.
The B-2 became viable because of its flight control system. As the test pilots said, the plane's computer simply would not let the B-2 be put into a stall, which was a bit of a shock to them, as putting planes into and recovering from stalls is an integral part of all military aircraft testing. Basically, the stall issue was solved...by not letting the plane ever enter a stall.

Pykrete is actually surprisingly resilient from melting. People should look up the material to get a better understanding of it. I think making something at least from it is absolutely plausible
That would be heavy especially if it doesn't melt fast but still melts slow liquid would definitely have weight especially flying close to the sun no pun intended.
Mythbusters already tried it. Plausible but impractical.
the krummlauf was intended to minimize the death spots for the tank crew, and that you can attack enemies near your tank (not all tanks had machineguns for defense). so the shattered bullets were not a negativ point at all.

All of them do work, to a certian extent.
Some have successors which are used today, but not neccessarily in war.
The funny thing is that weapon the Nazis tried to make to shoot around corners, Israel actually went on to perfect lol. It's called the cornershot, and is an attachment for an assault rifle that has a hinge for peering around corners, and has attachments for a flashlight, pistol, and 40mm grenade launcher. The user aims from behind cover using the camera, and can fire a grenade or the pistol from safety.

The cost of bullets compared to mini missiles is irrelevant. The goal was a gun that shoots missiles. Not to replace bullet weapons.
How does price equal reliability and of course some better tech is more expensive than old tech. you don't gyro-stabilize anything for free.

I feel that the one with the turret hat can be realistic if you put an automatic turret that detects enemies and shoots them.
It may work with today's updates in technology because you'd need a targeting system that can 100% correctly identify human enemies over friendlies because even humans still have an issue at times deciphering which is which if their aren't any obvious giveaways identifying them outright. The system would need to be small, compact, lightweight and durable as well which aren't as big of obstacles with today's technology. The system would probably need either a battery which I don't think I would want on my head because of weight and obvious dangers of a battery being on your head or wires coming off it that can be tangled, caught or easily ripped off disabling the entire unit making it useless weight on your head. Plausible at the least but not sure it's quite a practical piece of equipment just yet, maybe a couple of years if a company puts enough money and time into research and prototypes.

I remember that active denial system, my unit was one of the guinea pigs. And ya they said it was supposed to do all this stuff to us but when we walked through it all I felt was slight heat where the skin was exposed, and when in full uniform that isn't gonna do anything. Kinda funny

Not sure where the doubts about Brilliant Pebbles's efficacy are coming from; using computers and radar to aim your shots makes it easy to hit a missile in flight with a projectile.
The Star Wars system would have been far more successful anyway.

I saw something about pigeon guided bombs in WW2 by the allies, but as for igniting living animals, that is kinda sick. If that backfires on someone, they kind of have it coming.
Heard about those too, think they trained the pigeons to peck a dot for food, then strapped them into a missile and had them pecking at enemy ships thinking they'll get food. They would not have gotten food.
The Russians also tried to strap bombs to dogs and let them run under German tanks. But they trained their dogs with Russian tanks, so the dogs ran under T-34s and blew up their own tanks
I'm pretty sure the last one on the list actually got repurposed onto aircraft carriers to be apart of the anti air system
The Japanese balloon bombs were actually genius. Think about the Jet Stream and back then they knew some but not that much. So for them to get all the way to California was pretty amazing to say the least. However it did cause some deaths and for that I am sorry to them and their families. Now to time those balloons to drop weights to stay in the air and make it, you have to admit that was crazy.
The US definitely didnt want them to know that they were making it all the way over. It sounds a whole better then the Helmet cannon and an aircraft carrier made of ice. Lol.
The ice carrier was PERFECT. With todays tech it would be bigger and by far the most powerful weapon ever made.
Amateur military historian here. The Balloon bombs actually made it as far as Michigan with the most recent one being found in the 2010s. I'm currently in intern at a military museum in Iowa and we have the remains of one of the bombs on display. For anyone who is wondering why nobody really talks about them is that the US Government actually strictly forbade any news agency from talking about them for 2 reasons. 1. to keep panic to a minimum. 2. To keep any Japanese spies from learning that the balloons were in fact making further than they expected.
Also legend has it that the husband of the Sunday school teacher who was killed was sent 1000 paper cranes by the Japanese women who built the bomb as a sign of sorrow and peace.

The helicopter was invented in 1939 so why didn't they go with that? We could have had massive amounts of people saved or dropped in if we had the helicopter in ww2
The helicopter isn't a practical invention unless you get very small high power to weight jet engines with 2 running redundantly. Jet engines didn't get to that level of development until the 50s really
You know how they replaced the pig missle? They started putting fake trunks on their horses... Most elephants wont attack baby or teenage elephants... so this actually worked.

The hovering platform is like a super primitive prototype of what Spider Man's Green Goblin or Warhammer 40k's Dark Eldar hellions ride on. Those are super manouverable and Its riders are armoured though.

If you want to see The Tail Sitter in person there's 2 or 3 of them in Ohio at the Air Force Museum (it's a HUGE museum, with many cool aircrafts from around the world and timelines)

I looked up a bit about Geoffrey Pyke. It's really sad, none of this ideas really took off, and he ended up taking his own life by overdosing on sleeping pills. A friend of his, John Bernal, said the following:

Pycrete actually melts much slower than regular ice. That's kind of an important detail that you left out.
The design also weighed 2.5 million tons which would have made it almost immoveable.
It could easily be towed.
@@ricimer9770 The biggest thing that killed the project was the fact that the refrigeration unit that was meant to contain it while it was being constructed would have used more steel than an actual ship, so the impracticality of that really doomed it.
Making you wonder why not build the ship out of wood.?

Actually, with all due respect, it’s been known the USA has still been using that laser technology on other vehicles or just in the ground and it’s gotten even better. The plane was just part of an experiment with the Laser. I feel that should’ve atleast been mentioned about the plane’s laser. I love yalls videos a lot and always enjoy watching em! His videos are inaccurate in many cases, I am not a weapons expert or anything but even I know that the bat bombs were even more effective, than the inventor and the rest of the military Personal, that worked on the project thought, it was not failure. One major reason the girojet wasn’t developed further was the high price of the projectiles, the pykrete ship wasn‘t nearly as silly, as he made it look, the material is strong and the wood is great for isolation so it melts very very slowly.

When the Mongols won over China they only used primitive weapons like bow and arrow, while the Song soldiers got firing squads using muskets, cannon squads and rocket launchers. But when an army are filled with good archers they would win any war, they can read the wind and shot arrows few kilometers out to take out their target while bullets only go so far, the rockets worked well but there were not enough to stop the Mongols.
WW2 also seen such experimental weapons such as the Japanese "Death Ray".. Invented by a relative on my mother's side. The weapon did not really pan out due to the energy requirements.. Due to it being scrapped its hard to say if such a weapon could be fielded today or not. More so considering the advancements made in the technology involved. It still gets featured in movies though so there is that. If you ever watched old Godzilla movies you seen one without realizing it basically. At least models of them. ( The Death Rays in those films are indeed models of the real thing. )
Germany had a weapon that was based on sound.. A sort of sound cannon.. Though said cannon was the size of an extremely large factory. Both this and the previously mentioned weapon worked and was very deadly.. The problems are mostly due to size issues and time when they where invented. It made for a decent immobile defense platform but there really was not much time for them to improve on it.
Honestly there is a bunch more that had potential but because they where made when they where, and not all of the tech was quite there yet.. I feel if these ideas where to be researched again they have some strong potential.
