🌟 please read before commenting 🌟
Hey everyone and thanks for watching 👻
I want to clarify that I mistakenly used the wrong wording when describing Venus. I’ve gotten many, many of the same comments about a specific part of the video. I have always believed trans women are real women. I try to make it clear throughout the video that I was doing my best to be respectful. I may not always use the “right words” but my intentions are good and I’m always learning. No one is perfect.
Talking about sensitive topics can be like walking on eggshells, it’s difficult but important! I’ve also gotten plenty of rude comments from gatekeepers telling me I have no right making a video about the LGBTQ+ community because I’m straight. First of all, sorry not sorry. Second of all, bold of some of you to assume my sexuality.
Venus’s nephew and friends loved the video and didn’t find it offensive at all, and I’m happy with that. It shouldn’t matter who’s bringing awareness to very important issues, or how it’s being delivered, as long as it’s being done.
I forgot to mention that there are some spoilers in this video about Paris is Burning. If you don’t want me to ruin it for you, I suggest you watch the movie first and then come back to this 😁
I also had to trim out the trailer to the movie which makes for a strange jump cut so I’m sorry about that.
Also, I want to clarify that Venus might have died because she crossed paths with a psycho, not just because the killer may have found out she was transgender. No one will ever know for sure, but that’s why I talked about hate crimes. I didn’t realize I didn’t explain myself very well until after I watched it back 🤷‍♀️💕🖤

It's A OK, Sam. Anyone with a brain would've known that. You don't even need much context clues that the perpetrator might have been some nut-job. Anybody who would murder under those conditions would have to be a psychopath. Thing is, some Transgenders (or whatever the victim might have been) don't always come out that they're actually the opposite sex of whomever they're about to get down and dirty with; but violence towards them - and most importantly death - is inhumane and just plain wrong. I can see some people (assholes) leaning towards Venus was asking for it when she didn't give details about her gender, but come the fuck on, she never would've deserved to die. It's fucked up in this world. Nobody can truly express themselves. Society's full of assholes who demean and degrade others just because they're different. Just because of their skin color, ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, clothes, hairstyles, eye colors, size of their fucking arm. It's getting stupid. People will think of anything to marginalize others into groups they oppose for the dumbest reasons - and society worldwide as a whole are buying in to this shit. It doesn't matter! What you look like, who you are, what you do, where you came from. All of those evil assholes are only contradicting themselves. They're hypocrites and I'll tell you why. By degrading those people, they're showing just how insecure they are. What's the point of this and what does it accomplish? They should be smart enough to conjure up an answer. All this hate is useless and is getting us nowhere as an "intellectual" species. I honestly find animals, like pigs, smarter than these fuck-wits. We should be focusing our concern to better the aspects of society that actually matter. They're stuck in the norm of average human expression and doesn't know the meaning of 'Free Will'. Anything that's different to them is evil and should be hunted down to extinction. And the shitty thing is that not all of them started that way. Society taught them that. And it pains me that this will keep going on forever and forever and forever until human extinction. Generations upon generations will experience just how "far" we've come as a "civilised" race.
I probably didn't explain my points and themes well, I only hope you understood the gist of what I was trying to say. I just wish they're more people like you in this world. People only pay attention to the worst of things and negativity as a whole... A bit of optimism could go lengths for all of us - a cliché saying, but true. Sorry for the essay-long rant. Thanks for the video, Sam 👍✌💘

Great Vid , I saw paris is burning a year after its release in SF and 3 years later I moved to NYC !!! I recently saw the "outtakes" from the movie the scenes which never made to "paris is burning" !!! The venus that's shown in the movie is one sided !!! In the outtakes Venus takes about her grandmother who raised her and other topics and she was really very loving and caring soul !!! Jenny should have included more of her personal life details that venus talked about in camera !!! She ate like a horse must have had the highest metabolism ever !!!!bless you Venus !!!

I also think she could’ve had borderline personality disorder based on how Angie described her. It doesn’t make her a bad person. She was hurt and discarded by the world from childhood so it makes sense. Since people with BPD tend to be impulsive and reckless, she could’ve accidentally said the wrong thing to this person and it escalated to physical violence. This is why mental health is important, especially for marginalized communities. Everyone deserves to thrive. Venus truly is a lost princess, not Anastasia Romanov.

It amazes me and yet at times angers me the way you people talk about how we lived our life back then because of no real choice of our own. I am one of the few and I mean the few people that was there and still alive fortunately to this day! Venus wasn't the only one, so was Miss Chloe so with Miss Rhonda so was Miss Michael so was the tragedy of Sandy who's also in Paris is burning! The bottom line is this, most of those "people" children's, because that's what they were in Paris is burning was kicked out on the street as children's barely off the age 10 years old simply because they were gay and was forced into a life of prostitution and joining gangs as a small way of having some protection for themselves which we called "houses" they were not this glamorize thing that Paris is burning has show case I know, I was there! Today if these parents do what those parents did back then they will be hit with child abuse and negligent charges and probably plastered all over the media! Societee took terrible of advantage of those under age children that also includes Madonna!.. Madonna was very popular even back when she seen us dancing to killed time, instead of taken advantage of us she could have used her celebrity status to bring awareness of the plight to the horrible situation and violence the degradation of the gay community Of these kids tossed out on to the street standing on the corner at 12 and 13 and 14 year old picking up truck drivers in any car to have sex just to make $5 to get something to eat putting their life in danger! Instead she use it to make profit for herself! So now you want credit for your so called explanation? Dorian or Venus who you didn't even know but I did along with Phoenix kamali, ivory and many many others! All these decades later and no one still gets the real tragedy of what our lives was like! All you have to do is look at the beginning of Paris is burning, it's not about the dancing, it starts with the two- kids standing outside a "BLUES" a drag club at that time in the mid 1980s with the interviewer Janine was talking to a 15 and a 13 year old child in the middle of the street at 3:30 in the morning on a school day! Because they were on the streets and right after that they would walk a few blocks down and turn tricks in the car just to make money and go to a gay bathhouse to sleep or on the piers because societee didn't give a dam because they were gay and they were of color and their parents kick them out the house as well, that's the real story!

I new Venus Extravaganza very well. I actually stayed over her house once or twice with a friend. It was so sad when we found out about her death in late 1988. It felt like there was a dark cloud over us for a while. Well I know I was affected by her death saying to myself, I can't believe I wasn't going to see her anymore. Venus was always a lot of fun to be around. As small as she was she made up for it with her funny ways & kindness. I remember a night we were all at a club called the Paradise Garage in downtown Manhattan. Boy George happened to be in the club hanging out and guess who ends up sitting on Boy George's lap? Know other than Venus herself. Venus had Boy George laughing so much. He was loving little Venus. It's times like that, that make me miss venus something terribly. I miss her dearly. She did not deserve to die like that. No one does. RIP my little sister. God Bless your Soul.🙏

quick note: To become a member of a house you would have had to walked a few balls in your perspective category. Venus walked Femme Queen Realness and fashion categories so there was no voguing involved in her career. Ballroom is not just voguing, voguing is just Ballroom’s greatest export outside of our lingo.

The research footage in its entirety for the documentary is incredible. Some 5+ hours. The final cut is just a highlight reel. I think the criticism with its release is because the girls wanted it to be cinematic glamour. But instead it captured what was raw, real, and unpolished. Which in my opinion makes it all the more breathtaking. The hopes, dreams and confidence they ooze are at center stage as much as the pain, death, and depression hidden in plain sight. They each wanted fame and to be remembered as women. They got their wish.

Stop comparing iconic women of colour (specially transwomen) to white women who were pushed into the spotlight by a white supremacist society because iconic black women’s talents weren’t recognized. It’s insulting tbh. Most of these ‘sex icon’ white women (like Madonna) stole from LGBT POC and black women anyhow. I’m sick of black artists always being compared to white people because people genuinely have no idea about the talents that existed in the black world or that black people invented what famous white artists imitated.

Her family have no obligations to placate anybody. Venus was a biological man and that was her birth name. We do not get to decide on what we are in terms of race and gender because it is ingrained in our DNA. Whatever we think to the contrary only exist in our heads. Even if we change via hormones or surgery, our bodies will continue to go through changes throughout our lives as our biological sex.

It consider it very noble and important to tell what people had to endure in life and what happened to them. Life was difficult then and still is now.
The first time I watched “Paris is burning” was because I heard it mentioned here. It is a very interesting documentary that makes you understand, or at least try, how others have to cope with their problems and when they are ostracized by society. Besides that, I watched both seasons of POSE and on some moments, some scenes did seem a little too much in terms of drama or imagination, but now I realize that POSE depicts REAL situations of life and thus, perhaps Life will always beat imagination. That being said, now there is a Pandemic and the whole world seems altered, but not in good sense. Bottomline, who was ill treated before will be chocked now, that everything has gotten so much worse. I stand by my point, it is paramount to tell all kinds of life stories so that we ALL can understand how evil and unfair the world can be towards us all.

I wanted to preface by saying i'm very thankfull for your video and research**
Just wanted to give you a small feedback too, in terms of more appropriate language - instead of "actually female" you can say "biological/biologically born female"; instead of "looked like a woman" saying "has a very feminine presentation" or "passing" as the default beauty standard (in a heteronormative society ofc). Don't confuse "being a woman" with being biologically born a female. Our language shapes ideas and I understood perfectly you have a lot of respect towards this subject, I'm sure you've grown in the subject as this video is more than a year old, but the way you spoke might be misinterpreted and used against you and the community. Yet, again, thank you for your work

(I already typed out the whole comment I had on this video, but it got deleted somehow. I'm so pissed, I can't even fathom it into words. I could swallow lava....!! 😤😤😤) This is probably by far my favorite video of yours - and that's saying a lot considering how much of a fan-boy I am of your channel. I love the research you put in to this video; a lot of effort and passion must've went into this one, seeing as the topic at hand is so sensitive. You must've learned a bunch about the history of the LGBTQ+ making this video and garnered a whole new appreciation for who they are and what they stand for - I know I have. And I ain't saying all your other vids lacks in comparison to this *clears throat*, but your passion for this one REALLY shows!
It's kind of odd to me how nobody covered a hands-on video about Venus, even though she's as prominent a figure as Dorian Corey herself. Sam, you really have a knack cor discussing serious real-world problems, the irregular and iconic figures amongst our society, and I appreciate that. Of all the videos you could be made. You really care about shedding light on important - sometimes obscure - topics in your vids, and that's what makes you stand out to me.
I hadn't a clue about the LGBTQ+ scene throughout the early 1900s, so that one really caught me as something interesting and worth keeping in mind. People were expressing themselves freely when being different meant ridicule, abandonment, isolation and sometimes death. There was just so much blindness back then of preferences, it blinded us to the fact we're all humans and we're all in this world together, whether we like it or not. Venus was one of many who expressed herself without a care in the world, as if all this hatred on human nature & expression never existed. For that, I can't help but idolize her. You helped me expand what I knew about others and the world we live in once more, Sam, and I thank you tons for it. You did Venus and all those ridiculed justice. Karma's gonna come at you twice as hard for all the good you teach us on every one of your videos. Stay safe and as always, you're the coolest 😸👍✌

Thank you for making a video about Miss Venus. There must be DNA evidence on her clothes and the bedding around her body. Why doesn't the Police test the evidence for DNA? Her murder must be looked into. Her murderer must be brought to justice. It's still an open case. What can we do to force the police to do more than just look into her case? How do we get the police to test the DNA evidence from the crime seen and her clothing?

It’s my pleasure, thank you for watching! I wish I knew how to make them go back and test everything, it’s still a cold case so they should still be looking into new leads at least, but there are none :( maybe people could write to the police department? And ask them to look at her case again, but it might take a lot of people to persuade them

The world has changed SO MUCH since the wonderful and glorious 1980s. In most ways, I definitely think the change has been dramatically for the worst, but forensic testing capabilities are one thing that is remarkably better. Back then, far less DNA could be extracted and preserved, and far less could be done with it, unfortunately.

Love your video of Venus E. Just to recap your account of her murder, it seems plausible that Venus, in fact, did die from her injuries, due to the crime photos. She did not run away with a lover. Conversations observed over the years hint on the murderer as the very person who originally threatened her life, or a curmudgeon ( a sugar daddy type).

Firstly, I want to thank you for your advocacy for LGBTQI+ folks and POC. It’s difficult for minorities in this country, but even more so when you are a compound minority. The only correction I have is when referring to the Trans population. We now know that to accurately identify one’s gender, a chromosome test must be implemented, gender isn’t merely our anatomical parts, but a deeper concept. To call trans women “not real” is the same as saying people born in this country who aren’t white are not real American.

Many gays and trans women have had to do sex work to survive. Many have lost their lives in that dangerous work and lifestyle. The police put a low priority into these cases and many of the killers never found.
How could you say Venus may have faked her death and maybe ran off with a man?! When her body is buried ?! So she’s dead if you’re buried, unless they couldn’t find her body, but then why are they saying ages dead?!
Also, what Benus said in the movie that you say was copied from Venus is not true bc we all were using those slang terms like in 1981 and about 10 years before the movie came out. Yeah, we were all taking gay black slang in urban cities. We also were using she and her for other gay men. You just had to be there and I’m not even talking east coast gays bc this was in San Franscisco.

Now Trans people are hating on her for using their legal names? You can't hide from who you once were. Embrace everything that you were and everything you are now. People have gotten too soft. The acceptance that exists these days was unheard of. These girls paved the way for many of these offended and entitled queens today. Be proud of every part of you from the day you were born, to your transition, to your final days. Stop being so sensitive. It's counterproductive in the big scheme of life. 🙏❤️🙏❤️

Great retrospective! If I could give a little insight though: You did a great job respecting pronouns and gender, but I noticed in the beginning you mentioned Venus’ given birth name. Even though it’s part of her biography, many trans people could see this as disrespectful (I know you didn’t mean it that way) as trans people decide their chosen names for a reason, and that’s because it’s what they want themselves to be known as. It can be very humiliating for a trans person to have their ‘dead name’ constantly tied to them. Their chosen names are a symbolic way to break free from a life and gender role that was forced upon them by society.
Also, saying things like: “She looks like a woman” and “I thought she was a woman” and “the man she dated didn’t know she wasn’t a woman” can be very insulting and not as much of a complement as CIS people tend to think it is. It’s ‘othering’ trans people and invalidating their existence. This line of thinking is exactly what has historically lead to trans people (especially trans-women) being murdered in a cisnormative and heteronormative society.
    Hope this insight helps. 🙂
