😂since I got back from my NY trip last month, Ive been literally missing the authentic bagels 🥯 there!!!! Love you both, can’t wait for your next episode! 😍
Yes! Rice and miso-soup is not common breakfast in Japan anymore. But before I moved to America, I thought the common breakfast for Americans would be bread, eggs and ham etc. But surprisingly, it’s not true, many Americans seemed to eat cereal instead😂!!
I like Austin’s reaction (facial expression)to natto-donut!😂 I laughed so hard. And I feel the same way. I don’t feel like I want to try.😂 and I agree with “what’s the point(if it doesn’t taste like natto at all/ even don’t realize that natto in it) “ 😂 haha by the way, I really miss pretzels and donuts in the US too.
In Japan, We Don't think that no crust of bread is for children. That's why we don't care about the crust. We never think and get mad that we are not children even if there is no crust when we eat a sandwich. What I was surprised by you guys was you think that No crust is for children. New info for me about the way Americans think about crust.
I really enjoy your talks. When I was living in Harajyuku long time ago (1970s), I used to go to Aoyama supermarket to buy a freshly baked baguette. You had to go at exact 3pm to get fresh one which is soft inside and hard crust. I could eat an entire big baguette in 10 min. Also, one of the secret pleasure was to buy a slice of cake which is decorated by many fruits and eat it with freshly blued green tea. Japanese cake is not sweet and I miss it. The cake in US is so sweet that I can't eat.
Thank you for another interesting show and especially Austin’s crust story was interesting for me!! I’ve been to some European countries and always I found much harder bread there and I thought that’s fantastic!! That is because I’m a dentist and always think Japanese bread is too soft for teeth!! I BTW, I think I got a good idea for you. A few days ago I listened to songs by American band, Allman brothers band, the old American band, and I thought why don’t you talk about music in America. I mean whether there are differences among areas or features depending on areas. Moreover, if you let us know about your opinions about Japanese songs, that’d be much appreciated!! Have you ever done it?
Long story short about US vs Natto (not NATO). The FDA's stance on fermented foods in US involves very careful regulation, AKA very negative, primarily from a safety perspective. The fermentation process is considered problematic. And Natto in US have some restricitons. Cheese and ketchup are also known as types of fermented foods. No one can eat American foods without them, I might be too radical but correct me if i am worng. In fact US cheese is made by using lactic acid bacteria and other allowed microorganisms to achieve its unique flavor and texture, different from Europe. Ketchup, originally ,was developed as a fermented product in India, although modern commercial ketchup is typically made with vinegar rather than through fermentation. And the US Army spread it around the world during World War II.
I like American whole wheat bread and New York style bagles. I couldn't find whole wheat bread at Japanese regular grocery stores while I was staying in Japan last year. I bought some Japanese bagles instead, but they were very soft and not chewy at all.
Listening to your videos, I’ve really learned that Arthur has become totally Japanese inside whereas Austin is about half and half. When Austin said that Japanese sandwiches suck, I thought he was going to talk about the sandwiches in 7/11 because a lot of them are disguised to appear good but not so much ingredients inside.
I am Japanese and I miss American bagels with a caper, cream cheese and salmon. Bagels here are very hard and lack of flavor like the onion one. But there are some good bagel stores in Nagasaki. What I miss the most is not bagel, it's god damn reasonable-price crispy salt tortilla chips !
Question. Why do Japanese keep saying that there's no shokupan (食パン)in the US?? Isn't it just a loaf of sliced bread? which is available almost anywhere in the world?? Why do they talk like it's a Japan thing??
@@theaustinandarthurshow Okay, so it's just the cut? Any other difference? There are thicker cut loaves in the US, too, great for making French toasts. But when you look at Japanese sandwiches, those aren't any thicker than the US ones. I just don't get it.
@@sunahamanagai9039 it also has milk/dairy in it which gives it a richer taste. the bread you get on the shelf of american super markets tastes really different.
10,000 pound elephant in the room. Japanese sandwiches suck for one simple reason: Too little meat, too many veggies!! Cucumber on any sandwich is crime against humanity. No sandwich I've ever had anywhere in Japan has ever ever EVER come close to a solid Philly Cheese steak.
While I definitely love the meaty sandwiches in the USA. I think Japanese sandwiches are more in the lunch/ finger food class. You can also get good Reuben/pastrami sandwiches in Japan, just not at combini
@@theaustinandarthurshow Dennys has a decent/reasonable BLT. I know there are places here & there that have good sandwiches... food over all in Tokyo is outstanding... but as a general rule the sandwich games lacking.

It sucks! it drives me insane.
That's fair.
It sucks! は染み込んで、最近英会話で自分自身使うようになった。Thank you, Austin! 😂
Right off the bat too lol I heard it at least three times

You guys are so funny. You didn’t touch on tuna sandwiches that I miss so much. Do you miss them?

I've heard Voodoos Doughnut is coming to Japan. Then, we can buy Maple Bar with Bacon on top.
Hamburger is a kind of sandwich. Yeah, Austin doesn't like Mayonnaise. He doesn't like the M thing? (not McDonald's)
Are the bagels in America, taste different from the one in Costco Japan?
I loved street sold pretzels in Philadelphia!
It was very cheap cost maybe like only a quater a piece!
I love bagles with cream cheese, too, but cinnamon or blue berry bagles!
I really miss American club sandwich! Should I say sandwiches?
Question. Why do Japanese keep saying that there's no shokupan (食パン)in the US?? Isn't it just a loaf of sliced bread? which is available almost anywhere in the world?? Why do they talk like it's a Japan thing??
Because Japanese shokupan is much more thickly cut. It really makes a difference
