      Yeah... no. 844 is an express passenger locomotive, not a heavy freight engine. And remember that, when you hear of Big Boys pulling 100 cars, those cars were significantly lighter than modern cars: in those days, the standard box car was 40ft; today it's 50ft and many are 60ft or longer, and many are excess height, too. A Big Boy would happily pull 4,200 tons but this train is 2.5 times that much.

      Not an excursion. There would’ve been more passenger cars if it were. This was a ferry move to get the 844 back to Cheyenne to close out the season, hence the fact that the only passenger cars present were just the support/tool cars. The water tender’s there for obvious reasons, and the flatbeds were probably there for the sake of braking.

    That moment when you have three ultra-modern diesel-electrics and still need the help of a 70-year-old "obsolete" "dinosaur" to move your train - and the "dinosaur" provides all the extra power you need while still pulling its own train! Remember, steam was not withdrawn because it couldn't do the job, or could not do it as well as the diesels, it was withdrawn because diesels were cheaper - lower maintenance costs, and the ability to consist engines under one crew saved on labor costs.

      When show-time becomes go-time! UP carries its steamers on its roster as fully-operational head-end power, and not just as vintage toys -- the public-relations function of them is just an extension of their basic role as completely competent machines for moving serious modern-day revenue-freight/passenger tonnage (if necessary) at
      high speed (if possible).

    Fantatic. We had a similar situation (albeit with a lot less load) on the Settle - Carlisle railway in the Uk, in the early 1980s, when a following steam excursion had to push the whole freight, and the failed Class 40 diesel, up the hill and into a refuge siding. It was Jubilee Class 4-6-0 LEANDER. It did it, also, with its own train in tow. Who says steam is obsolete. Thanks for sharing

      As a correction, Leander did not have its own train in tow at the time; a web search for "Leander 40179" (the specific class 40 involved) gives quite a lot of documentation of the event, including photos of Leander running light engine to assist.
      Nonetheless, it was still no mean feat for a steam locomotive "geared" primarily for fairly high speed passenger traffic to haul both the failed diesel and its freight train.

One awesome thing I've noticed is that at about a minute and thirty seconds, the wheels slip just as they are passing the camera, then regain grip again. Seems like the crew saw the guy filming, and figured "We got power to spare. Lets put on a show for the camera". I mean, the wheels don't slip until they are almost next to the camera.

    Well, that shows why the UP built the Challengers and "Big Boys" in the first place for the western routes with steep and long grades. They have huge tractive effort and are the most efficeint when really rolling. I am an old fart so I am blessed to have seen them in revenue service. As a five year old I could be around operating steam engines without fear. In the age before tort attorneys were behind every bush, I had cab rides on both coal and oil fired engines. I bet few engineers today know about the "company notch." I try to make it over to the UP "Depot Days' every year and it is really sad that there isn't a passenger train that serves that event. I have often wondered how viable an excursion train would be from Chicago to Cheyenne with multiple stops for additional passengers.

      They had a few in their fleet but for whatever reason they liked the EMD E series better. The SP had a bit of everything from ALCo PA's to EMD E8 and E9's as well as F series passenger locomotives. From what I have heard SP didn't like Their ALCo PA's for very long and eventually phased them out in favor of EMD's product the E8/9. Santa Fe did have a few ALCo's as well but not as many as SP and like you said they mainly used EMD F series locomotives for their passenger trains. UP liked the E units while SP bought a variety of passenger locomotives such as those I named.

    That is THE most INCREDIBLE video I have EVER seen!! I had NO IDEA that ANYONE had videoed that incredible event!!
    Thank you very much for posting this stunning video here!
    I read the article in “Railfan & Railroad” about this astounding feat (sorry -- don’t remember which issue), but was not aware that a video of it existed. The crew of the 844 cold see the headlights of 2 other freights behind them, and offered to give the stalled freight a shove -- and were allowed to. And they DID IT!!
    The 844 an d her sisters (UP 800-843) were built to pull 1,000-ton passenger trains at 100 mph. They were built to develop maximum horsepower at 90 mph and to cruise at 110 for long periods of time. Fact. But engines that were built to pull long and heavy freights and to be used as helpers were much bigger -- many more drivers that were somewhat smaller and were more powerful. like the Challengers (4-6-6-4s) and the famous Big boys (4-8-8-4s).
    But use an 80-inch-drivered passenger locomotive as a HELPER??? Why not? AFAIK, that is the ONLY time she has ever been used as a helper on a freight train, and possibly the only time a UP 800 was ever used as a helper. And it was captured on video. Wow.....
    What the 844 did back the was simply incredible, and shows what a steam locomotive can do. The sheer POWER they have is mind-blowing!
    Otto Jabelmann and the Union Pacific and Alco wold be VERY proud.

      Let's see UP takes delivery of 844 just before Christmas 1945 never retires the locomotive runs it all over the country. Likely it never pushed a stalled train until this video? Not likely. My fist year as a fireman a westbound freight stalled in front of us. We were ordered by the west end dispatcher to tie on and push him over the top at Washington, Massachusetts. Power? 2 EMD E-7's three coaches. Not a lot of tractive effort as only 8 out of 12 axles were powered and we only had 4000 horsepower geared for 117 mph but push we did uncoupled at Washington and continued on crossed over at cp-148 and crossed back over at cp-150 while the west bound was waiting at cp-150 for us to go around him and get out of dodge.
      You can't say we're not going to use passenger power to push a freight because it would really tie up the road to try and get freight power in front of the passenger train to do the push with. When a train stalls the dispatcher doesn't care what's behind the stalled train just tie it on and push it to the top of the grade. We never got over the 6th notch due to slippage but we got the job done and were the traction motors hot when we reached the summit.

    The amusing thing that nobody ever comments on or pays attention to is the fact that when the Bigboy and Challenger ruled, freight cars still used friction bearing trucks while now of course everything uses roller bearing trucks. • @renegadeoflife87
      @renegadeoflife87 7 років тому +49

      They don't do it on purpose, as it damages the drive wheels and track. These engines have a noticeable throttle lag as the steam chest pressure rises and falls when working. It takes a steady hand on the regulator and a bit of practice handling the engine to get a feel for how quickly the engine will respond. When working hard, anything that makes the engine slip will let it break free into a wheelslip like that, and even if you back off the regulator it still takes a minute for the steam chest pressure to fall enough for the engine to find its feet again.
      Even smaller steam engines used on the farm had that same sort of throttle lag. It took me by surprise last summer at the throttle of a 1915 Frick traction engine, when trying to get the engine to turn slowly it seemed like it wouldn't want to move at all- and then suddenly it would take of and not want to slow down again until it used up the head of steam it had gotten before I could shut the throttle again.

    I remember a documentary on TV years ago when I heard about this incident. There were 3 diesels pulling the train when one of them lost power. It was pure luck that 844 was in the area and was able to help. Having said that, some of the comments here about newer engineers not understanding the kind of power steam locomotives truly had doesn't surprise me. Big Boy, Challenger, 844 and countless others could easily out pull several diesels by themselves. I don't know the figure/ratios but if you look at the kind of power they put out, that's all the proof you need.

    I come back to this every once in a while just to marvel at the sight of it. This loco isn’t only replacing the (probably at least 2) broken down diesels on the freight consist, it’s also not even bothered with uncoupling its own load first. Essentially doing the work of 3+ locos by itself. The intensity and loudness of the chuffing even from a long distance away, the power you can see when the wheels slip and then regrip as it pushes through that MASSIVE stalled freight consist, it’s truly incredible. Just trying to imagine the horsepower being produced here by old school 19th century-tech mechanics and boiled water in a firebox is enough to spin your head. These things are still and always have been massively superior to anything that routinely runs the rails these days, nevermind the 4000 series locos that could singlehandedly do the work of 5-7 modern D-E locos. Their only achilles heel was the expertise and man-hours required to maintain the parts and linkages that turn the energy released by that burning coal/oil/wood and captured by the vaporizing water into kinetic rotation of the wheels, compression of air to power the brakes, steam heating for any passenger coaches, deicing heat for the wheels and mechanics below the chassis, and the chuffing draft inducer that forces the smoke and spent steam out the funnel. It was cheaper to maintain more inferior D-Es than fewer superior Steamers.

      Actually, 844 is only replacing one of the diesels. Of the three units, only one failed. 844 could never move this much tonnage solo.

  • @6h471
    @6h471 6 років тому +20

    Great video. Good to see 844 bark with a heavy load. Just out of curiosity though, I looked up tractive effort on it. 844 has just under 70,000lbs. By comparison, a GE AC4400 has 183,000 starting, and a bit over 165,000 continuous. A big boy has about 135,000. So, if the remaining two diesel lead units couldn't pull it, neither could two big boys. They would still need 844 pushing.

    • @Texassince1836
      @Texassince1836 5 років тому +1

      That train could have been pulled by 2 4000 class locomotives, it would have just needed a push by a switcher on the rear (assuming it started on an upgrade, if the yard is level-ish a push would not be required) which would have uncoupled and returned to the yard once moving a good speed. The 4000s would then be able to pull this up the hill at track speed, just do not let it stall.
      A single 4000 class locomotive could handle this on flatlands.

    Although steam power is not as efficient, practical, safe, economical, or environmentally-friendly as modern diesels and electrics are, it is unrivaled in terms of sheer spectacle. The stack talk, the sounds of the clanking drivers and the wheelslip, it is pure poetry in motion. To see a locomotive of this vintage working as hard as 844 is here is something that does not happen often today, and it harkens back to a time when this kind of thing was common, when the whir of traction motors and the roar of a diesel engine was instead a "chuff-chuff" and a hiss of steam, with a long plume of smoke trailing behind.
