SYNOPSIS:
After moving to Sunnydale, California, Buffy Anne Summers just wants to be a normal teenager. Back in Los Angeles, her first Watcher had died; she inadvertently burned down the gymnasium at her old high school; and her parents got a divorce. The move to Sunnydale is supposed to give both her and her mother, Joyce, a clean slate. But then she meets the school librarian, Rupert Giles, and quickly learns there is no escaping her destiny. With Giles as her new Watcher, she reluctantly steps back into her role as the Slayer. But this time she is not fighting alone. She now has an inner circle of special friends-- Willow, Xander, Cordelia, and a mysterious young man named Angel-- ready to join the fight and drive in a stake or two if need be.
Buffy's mother and friends become trapped inside Sunnydale High School when a vampire named Spike launches an attack against the Slayer on Parent-Teacher night.

It cracks me up that you could hear his accent was fake within the first two lines he spoke. You are correct; he's from California.
hmm i heard texas but did no research so...
As someone also from the UK, what baffles _me_ is that there are fans from here that _don't_ immediately realise James Marsters isn't from the UK (and even some that praise his accent as spot-on !?!? And I say again "!?!?" :).
(don't get me wrong 1. his accent gets better as the show goes on and 2. just by acting chops and sheer screen presence he makes it not matter anyway BUT it _is_ pretty bad at the start. Oh and 3. it also actually kind of works for the character - 200 years old, well-travelled etc. - to have an accent that's a bit all over the place)
@@anonymes2884 It settles down into a pretty good accent after a few episodes, but I never forget that it's "an accent." He never quite gets the hang of some words ("bollocks" gives him real trouble.)
spike & dru: 2 of the best villains on the show.
The Anointed One had to be killed off because his actor was still visibly growing, which obviously ruined the effect of how vampires don't age
He did a lot of sitting in his S2 appearances 😂
Love Spike and Drusilla! My favorite vampire characters on this show.
Joyce hit Spike with the side of the axe, that's why the bounce. 😉
Spike does improvise well, and he's also smart enough to run away when a plan doesn't work, rather than stick around and risk getting staked. 🙂
yes, people undervalue spike's sense of self-preservation. most vampires die the first time they encounter a slayer. spike has killed two slayers, but that doesn't mean he necessarily killed either on the first attempt. running away is a big part of his success.
"He kinda looks like Billy Idol!". Well, actually...
No might about it, he is the coolest vampire.
Luke was actually staked in episode 2… after falling for Buffy’s lie that there was sunlight and turning his back to her… when it was the middle of the night and the light was from a street lamp.
Direct sunlight does set vampires on fire in the Buffyverse. I think the Annointed One died extra fast due to being a small child, although it can be quite fast anyway.
Also, the “love” of vampires in this universe is generally very toxic… more a mixture of obsession and lust than love, at least generally speaking.
Some vamps go up like kindling, some can burn for minutes and are easily extinguished. It's best to not worry about these things, I think.
There was never a love triangle in the show. It's not really that simple. It's so much more than romantic "ships" That's why it still holds up 20 years later. Just enjoy the ride.
One of the most iconic scenes in the whole show when Spike ( one of the greatest characters in The Buffyverse ) rolls into town and drives right over the Sunnydale sign. School Hard is one of the best episodes of S2. James Marsters was so impressive in the role, he became an instant fan favourite. Some great writing in this episode, when Xander goes to get Buffy's bag and pulls out a yoyo, tampon and then stake, this shows Buffy from child, to teenager, to adolescent showing how she is growing up. Great too when Joyce clobbers Spike on the head with the axe. All in all a great episode for early S2 with Angel/Spike/Drusilla who have a shared history through the centuries to add to the arc of the Buffyverse as a whole.
One of the great "Whew! Thank goodness." moments in TV history when the Annoying One gets replaced by Spike.
Lots of development in this ep: The revelation about Snyder and the Chief of Police having guilty knowledge, a vampire who successfully and repeatedly hunts Slayers across time, Angel's previous sins having significant consequences, the total demeanor change when Angel posed as Angelus...
"PCP" AKA "Angel Dust" is an extremely potent drug that frequently causes psychotic, dissociative and very violent behavior when abused. It is notorious for allowing its users to display inhuman strength and the ability to soak up incredible physical punishment, including multiple gunshot wounds.
Buffy didn't just burn her previous school's gym down. She was just part of Sunnydale's school building burning down in the previous episode, so she's done it twice now 😄...
I never realized that was at the school. What is there that shows it's at the school?
@@republicoftexas3261
it's established in that episode that the boys were doing their "science project" at school.
Buffy: Look, he'll k*ll Cordelia! You can't just give and take lives like that. It's not your job.
Chris: He's in the old science lab. Everything's set up there.
It's so amusing that you caught that James Marsters isn't British, I'm pretty sure most UK reactors do, but back in the day we all thought JM's accent was so perfect 😂 it was so jarring to realize he wasn't English.
Same here! I always thought he was British and was shocked to find out he was American, lol.
Hah, for me (from the UK) what was jarring was hearing Anthony Stewart Head's natural accent for the first time (he's not posh like Giles, his real accent is just pretty standard working/middle-class London). The only surprise for me at the time was character-I-won't-spoil-starting-with-'W' - genuinely thought that actor was a Brit who'd lived in the US (but possibly, like ASH, putting on an RP accent) rather than the other way around.
(it's actually more surprising to me when UK reactors _don't_ pick James out as not of these shores - he's brilliant in the role IMO but his accent, especially early on, not so much :)
I think most UK reactors- or just Europeans in general - tend to catch on to him not being British a bit quicker than the American segment.. but I will say this though.. he does step his game up quite a bit in the future.. it was really(!) shaky in this episode.
Spike and Dru have entered the chat!
Oh, interesting, I always interpreted Spike showing up a night early to be deliberate to have the moment of surprise and give Buffy less chance to prepare, not that he was actually too impatient, but this might very well be some of column A, some of column B
The algorithm brought me here - subscribed so quick!
Btvs fans can be intense, so please watch out for spoilers from this point onwards.
I'm excited to watch you on your journey!
No ma'ma, BIlly Idol looks like Spike.
Amen.
Within universe, he looks like Billy Idol. Spike was continually reinventing himself, based on cultural ebbs and flows, until [spoiler] happened.
Part of the reverence for the annoying one was the prophecy that the slayer would not stop him. Which was technically correct :)
Fun reaction to an important episode. For many the first 14 episodes are the prologue chapters to an epic novel in 144 chapters. The Buffy fans I know think it’s this episode where the show blasts off.
Now Principal Schnider and the Police Detective. We first saw government involvement with the Supernatural in Season 1, Episode 11 about The Invisible Girl. This episode makes it more obvious that events in Sunnydale are not happening without notice. This is important because to become a strong , independent, loving, and morally responsible woman she has barriers to overcome. One barrier is The Administrative State that seeks to minimize the individual to promote the determined general welfare. Buffy has to battle not just demons but societal barriers, moral ambiguity, darkness, and demons in the world and within. This is the first glimpse of the need for the bureaucracy to care for itself more than the citizens is to work for. The importance of their defined good is more important than the truth and real safety.
A lot of fans consider this episode (along with the _Prophecy Girl_ episode) the turning point of the series. Spike blatantly states it when stating to "The Annoying One" (right before killing him) that there's going to be more fun and less ritual once The Anointed One dies and with Spike in charge. Its a great Doylist and Watsonian moment.
The Annointed One was being played by a kid growing up, who was playing a part where ghrowing up was an issue.
I always looked at Buffy being down for the count and her mom saving her (he not only was a match for Buffy but only lost because Buffy's mom came back for her). That's why Spike, afterwards, states as the first person to say "A slayer with family and friends. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure." He is the first one to acknowledge the good about it, even though he means it as bad.
No love triangle. Just a ship war
Sheila continuing to go to school would be problematic - too much sunlight in the daytime! 😉
Sunlight didn't kill Luke.
The Annoying One had to go because the actor was having growth spurts and you might have noticed they only showed him sitting down in this. Buffy's mom didn't notice that Spike is a vampire. It was too dark in the school So she didn't try to kill him and only hit him with the flat side of the axe.
Excellent episode - always interested in all the 'blood' references in this one and wondered quite what Whedon was doing with it - perhaps just sneaking in references to something that otherwise couldn't be allowed to be mentioned in a 'teen' show. at the time.
'Cause it's always got to be blood.
aah, somebody who can tell that Spike's actor is not British from the beginning.
Great reaction! And great episode. All of the main storyline episodes in Season 2 are pretty great. Sadly, there are also a lot of monster-of-the-week episodes in Season 2. I wish they would have made a lot more storyline episodes, that would have lifted Season 2 to even higher levels. But they improved on that in Seasons 3 and 5, where there are a lot fewer weak monster-of-the-week episodes.
And the Evil Couple are in Sunnydale!!
Without spoiling anything.. but there is a reason why James Marsters - and Spike by extension - wound up in the hallowed halls of Genre Television royalty.. so to speak.

@@Heldemon it's almost like you googled the same information that I already posted! I'm guessing you did what I did, answer the question before reading the comments. 🙂
@@ernesthakey3396 I did, your comment wasn't there. It seems it only shows up if you sort by newest comments.
@@Heldemon ah, yeah - YT sometimes does weird stuff with comments. I have had comments I posted that I then couldn't see unless I got out of YT and back in again. 🤦♂️🤷♂️
Binge watching shows you say? Let’s c 🤭🤫
There is no love triangle. People ship non couples all the time. There is a whole episode of supernatural about how people ship the 2 brothers, who are brothers.
Yep, in fact the fan term "'shipping" _originated_ in "The X-Files" fandom - a show that, at least for the vast majority of its run, featured a famously platonic male/female partnership.
Yeah, he's American. I don't think he practised the accent much at all.
I can mostly look past it, but some words are just too far lol
Apparently James worked with ASH on the accent, which is more like his native accent than the more posh accent he uses for Rupert.
Spike has been around the world, and many folks who travel a lot lose some of their original accent, so I just assumed that was the case with him, he'd lost some of his original British accent.
@@ernesthakey3396 Yeah like Angel had. I had a family member from New York that lived 20 years in Texas. When he went back to New York people wouldn't believe he was from there because his accent changed so much.
@@republicoftexas3261 LOL yep 20 years in any place, you're going to have at least some change in your accent just from general exposure!
@@ernesthakey3396 He likely worked with ASH on the accent _later_ (which is why his accent gets better as the show progresses). At the start, in his first episode, I doubt he'd done that much prep (on a 90s US TV schedule they rarely had the time).
But yep, that Spike was 200 years old and well-travelled also _somewhat_ excuses it (with the best will in the world, I _highly_ doubt that was deliberate on JM's part but still, it works in-universe). There's another, IMO much more important, reason too though ** spoilers for later episodes follow **:

"Spike" is a _character_ to some extent right, a sort of coping mechanism for rejection ? So Spike's accent isn't _William's_ natural accent either (which was originally more RP, like Giles) it was, at least initially, _also_ put-on, like an actor faking it for a role.
And even at its worst, Marster's accent is _way_ better than DB's woeful "Oirish" IMO (in the past that is - I actually thought he did a really good job dropping the odd Irish inflection into _present_ Angel's accent, _he_ was very believable as a person that had lost their natural accent except for a few small elements here and there).
@@anonymes2884 agreed, especially on Angel before he became Angel.
I always give the accents a pass anyways, because as long as they aren't trying to pass off a Texas drawl or something similarly recognizable as being from the UK, I figure at least a hint of foreign language works well enough to show they aren't originally native to "America". And for older vampires, especially, the "they've been around the world a bit" head canon is all I need.
Spoiler for a future character...
I even cut Bianca Lawson some slack. They kinda messed with her a bit but I think she plays her role fine in spite of that.
See the OED for the multiple meanings of “sire”. As an Englishwoman I assume you must be familiar with how you addressed your “betters” and particularly your sire in monarchical times. As for the “you were my Yoda reference”, I could only barely tolerate Star Wars and did not watch any of the later films. I had already seen Hitchcock, Godard, and Truffaut before Star Wars and went for adult films instead of those for the adolescent crowd. Yoda wasn't the daddy of Luke was he?
Yoda was Luke's teacher, his guru. Feel the same way you do about Star Wars
She interpreted sire exactly how it was meant at the time it was written.
