I like it, even the "ugly" fairing! I assume your camera on the ride was chest mount, so is your line of sight through the windshield or over the top. Very nice review.
Such a nice Motorcycle. Long Rider for any TRIP. ALSO GREAT to show off around town. I982 was a GREAT year for Yamaha inline fours. Maxim 550 chain drive, 650 shaft , 750 shaft. And your wonderful Ride 1100 Maxim that Bike IS so Sweet. Thanks again for crusing..🐕
The XJ1100J MAXIM is a great machine, it's smooth and comfortable and it sounds awesome starting up and idling. I have had one for a good long time and I found another one on Marketplace that's just pristine and I dropped a down payment to hold it for me. I look forward to grabbing it up ASAP and riding it forever.
Nice job and review. Looks like the big daddy version of the old '81 Seca 750 I had back in the day. I agree with you about the fugly fairing and I always loved 4-1 exhaust too, better sound and performance.
if i recall right the xs 11 was one of the first japanese bikes to run in the 11 second range in the 1/4 mile.pretty quick in the late 70s when even corvettes were in the 15s.i have to agree about the progressive suspension system upgrades.nice difference.i remember seeing that 4 into 2 exaust system in the old jc whitney magazines back in the day for about 100$.times have certainly changed.
I got into motorcycles after picking up a Cycle World magazine and reading the 1/4 mile times of the bikes listed in the back. 11-12 second times were sooo much faster than the fastest cars and I could actually afford one. Performance per dollar was awesome and still is.
I lived for many years in chelmsford, Ma, way back before I moved overseas. I could swear the road you were riding is either Carlisle road or somewhere in that area. I used to take Carlisle road to work in my Miata and on my Yamaha Vulcan 800. Am I close in terms of where you are?
Looking at an xj1100 locally. I heard once the rear master cylinder goes bad you can’t find rebuild kits anymore. I googled and could only find front master rebuild kits. Any opinions. If the master that links the front left disc to the rear discs goes bad are you out of luck? Thanks.
I think you can replace the rear master cylinder and front as well with XS1100 parts and convert back to standard style brakes. Of course you'll need new lines as well.
Carburetors rare need to be entirely replaced. Most often they need cleaned and you may need to replace some parts inside them. I suggest finding a good motorcycle mechanic and having them look at your bike. Good luck!
This one looks like a bird beak but I've seen worse fairings on bikes of that era. As you say, for cooler weather, highway riding, why not? You're lucky to have choices. *Hey ... where might we find progressive springs for bikes of similar older design?*
Looks like a lot of well done work is complete. " So ugly its cool" is an understandable description of the fairing :) Looks to me like the bike is geared way too low for me, but thats kinda normal for the era. That bike could easily pull an overdrive gear in 5th, like 0.75 !
I agree. Remember, all vehicles of the time were designed for a 55mph speed limit and are relatively smooth at that speed. Who knew it would go back up again?
I like to see shaftdrive competion between 4 big japanese aircooled fours. Witch one shaft is smoothest to ride. Every bike uses different style of damping technology. Some have separate oil in front bevel gear and some uses same motor oil with engine.
That's a good recommendation Jim. I have three shaft-drive muscle cruisers (Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha) but my Kawasaki is chain drive. I have two shaft-drive Kawasaki's but one is more of a sport-tourer and the other is liquid cooled. So... I'm not sure how to do that comparison just yet.
Sell me your XJ !!! Really. I've had 7 XJ11s and countless XS11s. I just bought two XJs that were complete but barned for a number of years and not running with the idea to go through them but health dictated that wasn't happening so I sold them as a pair. I'm much healthier now and really want one again. So let me know if you want to sell. Let me know if you know of any for sale. I'd love to have that sitting next to my Springer. That wind jammer got to go though, Ugh.
It is for sale locally to make room for other projects. If you're seriously interested you can contact me via email: jonsmotorcycle@hotmail.com And I have a headlight that will go with it.🙂
I have a NOS Yamaha fairing complete with wind shield, OEM wiring harness and keys for the 2 storage compartments. I can reached thru my youtube channel if interested. Very rare, I have had this proably 20 yrs.
Jon, I believe it was fixed, (the tranny prob) in '80 for the '81 model. My '81,,,,,,, no problems, yes: I "CAN" make it pop out of 2nd, but no, it's been fixed. Really!
Sounds like I'll continue to drive this one like I have been, being mindful of the transmission. It is set up like a tourer so hopefully it was driven like a tourer in the past. 🙂

Thanks! Great question. My line of sight is over the windshield. Cheers!

Nice, Carl! I actually film in beautiful Lancaster County, PA. Evidently, there are a few places in the US that look similar. Cheers!

Moto-Guzzi of that era had linked brakes as well.
Interesting. I'm not sure what the supposed benefits were but I prefer the traditional brakes myself.
