I have 6 of these at my teaching studio. I joke about taking all 6 out and stacking them to play live. Compared to other modelers in which I feel latency, with the Vypyr I feel zero latency. These are solid amps.
I owned this amp for several years, and it's brutal amp for the price. I used it on hunderds of gigs and not just for metal. I played even blues, funk, pop and dnb with it. In my opinion, if you play smaller gigs, up to 700-800 people, it is better option than some head/cab options. But one thing that bothered me the most is not the character of the amp, it is the high end hiss that every amp model produced when you implement the gain. If they fixed this problem, this very amp would be the next bandit 112 in terms of the mass usage.
wow my dream come tru,ola your the best bro,but some of us are poor.its like you see us .this gives me hope.thanks for remembering the little guy HELLO FROM TEXAS.
The gain in this amp series is absolutely mindblowing considering the price. Better than a lot of more expensive SS amps. A cheap way to get that 'wall of distortion' sound that you see in live shows is to take this amp, another amp that has a different sounding distortion like a marshall SS amp and hook them both up to an EHX switchblade and use both A+B channels.
It sounds different, more boxy, but not necessarily better. It is a modelling amp after all which generally do better with flatter response speakers (the amp models are voiced for it).
I am amazed to see a modern video on one of these! I bought a VIP 3 six years ago and it has served every need I had in guitar playing. I have never needed to get a new amp or very many pedals because this thing does SO MUCH. I can't believe how clear and present this thing sounds for a relatively cheap practice amp, I love this amp to death. Mine is beat to all hell, turning the knobs down actually makes them go UP for some reason, but using the software you can find online bypasses that issue pretty easily. I still use mine every day and only recently, after six years of using it, have I thought of selling it and using an amp sim on my computer. This thing still holds up against every other amp in its category and I wish more beginner guitarists would buy these instead of Line 6 amps. I can't say enough good things about the Vypyr.
I threw a V30 into a Katana 50 combo and it improved the sound and response 1000%. I got a tighter, punchier response with more growl, increased clarity, and it kept up with our drummer way easier and cut way better without having to sacrifice EQ. Put one in the Vyper so I can hear it and go blow 500 on an amp and speaker I don’t need! Peavey is such underrated gear!
Hey I have a boss katana MK2 50 watt combo and I've been trying to get mine to sound like this and I just can't idk if it's my amp or guitar I just just recently got a new guitar a schecter Damien 7 platinum with active emg's but they sound weird through my amp has like a weird thump to it when I play an open string but mainly I've been looking for this kind of sound
The first "real" amp I ever had as a kid (that wasn't the one that came with the Behringer guitar starter pack) was an older version of the Vypyr, and while it wasn't amazing, getting to try all those different FX for that cheap was huge for me! I found the distortion channels to be more than fine in a bedroom practice setting. I gotta see if I still have that thing lying around
These beautiful Beasts are so easy to use and sound GREAT. Peavey's motto is always "Good gear at Affordable prices". This one qualifies. I don't think the speaker is supposed to be up upgraded/replaceable since it's designed only specifically to perform with this amp.

An absolute classic! Then again I owned a Peavey Classic tube combo amp, and that one just didn't do anything useful for me. Overall a good, solid brand.
Yes! Finally someone in this sphere reviews that series. I have one of the older sieres from 10 years ago, and the analog modelling of Peavey's own and other "loud" tube amps is pretty damn good. (and the vintage models sound good to me, too, although I never owned one)
My dad has the old black panel Vypyr and it sounds absolutely killer, I grew up playing on that amp a lot. After a while, we added a VIP 2 into our collection and it sounded pretty much identical but with even more features so we used it as a bass amp. Highly recommend any iteration of the series
My local guitar store tried to sell me one of these last year. Passed on it because I didn't have time to test it, and the packaging looked cheap as hell. After doing some research it seemed that it was great for metal, but a number of people complained that it didn't last a year. That was the exact problem I had with my Blackstar ID Core 10, and didn't want to change amps again after a year. Ended up going with a Vox VTX20 and am super happy with it.

The Vypyr 1 was my first amp ever, and I used the triple X model with the integrated boost, sounded great for my first amp. Served me well for a good 4-5 years.
Thanks for the great review ... you probably like the amp so much because unlike the Boss and Line 6 the VYPYR uses analog distortion (TransTube). The Power Sponge is also part of it and actually patented - it simulates turning down the power section of a tube amp, and the SAG of a real tube amplifier. The gate on it is really not designed to be the type of gate you would find in a pedal....it's more to get rid of background noise and we realize it could be improved. The VYPYR Pro does have an adjustable gate. I hear you on the interface ...hard to control all that stuff from the front of an amp...most of the competitors you have to use outboard gear or USB to access features at least you can get to all features from the amp itself - Thanks again! -Fred
Definitely want to hear it with a speaker upgrade. I know some modelling amps use more "flat" response speakers to let the cab models do the work, so I'm curious how it would sound.
I remember your Tube 120 head, I was on the fence about getting a Tube 60 combo and that video had some influence on me buying it and I loved it, effects were also modeled pretty well
Awesome demo, ola. \m/ I’m a huge peavey fan agree that peavey vypyr amps are phenomenal. I also agree that these modeling amps are underrated. I use to own a peavey vypyr vip 1 amp and I personally like that amp better than a line 6 spider amp. It has such a raw and organically heavy sound. I personally like the 6550 and xxx models on this amp in heavy mode. Plus some of the other effects like chorus and synth effects are pretty good.
I work in a music store and this is easily my first suggestion for the beginning metal guy. Even for the guys who have big rigs, I suggest these for practice setups, even beyond boss katana.

Peavey has been a great brand for decades, especially if you wanna do metal ! I loved the valveking, classic 30 (this one doesnt look like a metal amp, but it can do 80's heavy pretty well) and the Bandit 112 i had. I loved especially the Bandit for its warmth, sturdy construction and of course this grindin' distortion that became a classic. Apparently the Ultra is really good and of course the 5150/6505 is the way to go for metal, may it be oldschool or modern (also one of my favorites, never owned one, but always loved to play these). The Vypyr is no exception, but i'm not a fan of the digital processing thing goin'on inside, but that's more of a matter of taste from someone who owns amps twice his age ! So to sum it up, the vypyr is indeed good, and as long as it gets the job done, well, it's the right tool. Have a nice day everyone !
Picked up one of these about last year brand new from my local guitar shop. Love everything about this amp! Shout out to you Ola and Rob from Vintage Music, Best guitar store around in Canada!
I ordered a VIP 2 the other day. Its not arrived yet, but it looks like a really good home practice amp. And dare I say the ones with the 12 inch speaker MIGHT be gig worthy. Though I've not used one yet, so I don't really know what it'd be like for gigging.
Well, from my own experience Peavey are super reliable amps. Been using this amps and some expensive ones for some decades, and I can tell that in reliability they beat everybody else. My last Peavey was a Valveking212 and had no complaints in a decade! Again, maybe not the best tone machine, but hell they are the most reliable. Tip* change the speakers, use an extension cab and run your favorite pedals/emulators/etc in the front and you're going to be surprised! Great video Ola
Im just going to be the guy that points out all this v30 stuff is getting old lol. This is a modelling amp, not a tube amp. Modelling amps generally need flat response speakers, the amp models are voiced for it. A v30 will sound different but not necessarily better, or how you imagine they sound with your favorite tube amp etc..
@@jrg770 you can certainly tell where the current fad is speaker wise lol. V30’s are great speakers, but they are not the be all end all of metal tone. I myself prefer Greenbacks over v30s. These vypyrs are just running what are essentially Blue Marvel speakers in the 12 inch models so a swap is well in order when you get one.

Nice review Ola. As the (former) owner of the VIP-1, I totally agree. Amp sounds great, although it's lacking noise gate settings. VIP-1 has 8" speaker which is OK for home use, but not enough for louder environment. My friend has a VIP-2 with 12" speaker, same as VIP-3, and that one is way better. I was considering replacing speaker, but I done some research and it seems that these Peavey speakers are tuned for use with this specific amp and it's amp models, so replacing it with something else (ie. Celestion) may not be worth it, as it may not necessarily give expected results. USB connection is useful for simple direct recording in DAW (amp becomes soundcard with all the benefits of built-in amp models and FX). (I put some samples on my YT "channel") USB also allows to edit presets and banks in the amp, with a simple yet outdated aplication. I didn't use it that much. When I started meeting a friend to play some music "live" again, it occured that my VIP-1 couldn't match his VIP-2 in "loudness war", so I (just recently) sold my Peavey VIP-1 and got myself something louder. :)
I have an original Peavy Vyper tube 130 and it's a beast. I Brooke up the combo and made it into a head and 4x4 cabinet. It also has the big pedal board. I really should get the thing fixed and use it again.
I bought one of these a few years ago it destroys Line 6 and other modelling amps. Outside of a proper tube amp, this is great for everything up to small gigs.

I can only agree. Using VIP2 for years and it djents, it chugs and makes me smile all day.
+1 for the Celestion upgrade comparison video!!!
It sounds sooooo brutal man!! That's amazing!!
I remember your Tube 120 head, I was on the fence about getting a Tube 60 combo and that video had some influence on me buying it and I loved it, effects were also modeled pretty well
You finally demo'ed my amp!!
Also BTCH is the Peavey Butcher Amps.
I work in a music store and this is easily my first suggestion for the beginning metal guy. Even for the guys who have big rigs, I suggest these for practice setups, even beyond boss katana.
It really does sound better than a katana for metal.
I had a VIP 2 AND my buddy had this one and both sound killer. Has a built in delay reverb chorus etc all the fx you need. Killer amp for the price 🤘
VIP 2 vs Orange Crush 35RT?
@@TigrrrUnleashed I played the Crush 20 and it's a good amp but Not as metal as this. The Vypyr has fx too and the Crush doesn't. I'd buy the Peavey again honestly. I had the VIP 2
@@briangreene851 Thanks for your input, it means a lot to me esp. since the price difference between the two amps is so little.
@@TigrrrUnleashed I priced out what I needed with the Crush to make it really awesome and would have to buy a fx processor,an OD pedal etc. For my needs anyway the Peavey makes more since and you can buy the small foot controller for another $120 USD which adds a looper,wah/expression pedal and total preset control from your feet. Alot of fun!! Glad to help bro 👍
I like you dude. You’re not snobby but super down to earth and realistic about your reviews.
Awesome!
Can you do a Katana vs Vypr video?
Also, could you do a "Will it chugg" with Marshall Origin 5c combo?
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
Yes he can, can’t you Ola 😉
Lol katana? Why?
@@remuslycan6473 Because i can ask, and because Ola said that in his oppinion Katana is the best modeling amp, and now in his oppinion, Vypr is also one of the best.
Enough for your?
Cheers🍺🤘🇵🇹
@@portuguesebeer5069 what he meant was that peavy vip 3 was the best for insanely good metal stuff ,, but he still likes katana but would probably need a overdrive or distortion pedal in front of the amp tho ,,,because katana probably doesn't do hard or heavy metal by itself without a pedal like the peavy viper 3 does ,,I had this same vip 3 and it does do heavy really good without any pedals ,,I can attest to that .
@@portuguesebeer5069 oh yeah that's enough
You're really childisch
When you have a bad day, watch an Ola video....makes it all better. Thank you and hello from Ohio.
Would love to see more about this amp. Like changing the speaker or direct input with Ola ir
When he switched to the orange guitar the riff had a Mastodon-ish vibe \m/
Picked up one of these about last year brand new from my local guitar shop. Love everything about this amp! Shout out to you Ola and Rob from Vintage Music, Best guitar store around in Canada!
Have always loved the Vypyr amps. Lot of bang for your buck. Would love to see you review an Ampeg VH140C someday, the brutalz are strong!
My absolute favorite is the newer Vyper X2. I use the Butcher and it's absolutely amazing
I ordered a VIP 2 the other day. Its not arrived yet, but it looks like a really good home practice amp. And dare I say the ones with the 12 inch speaker MIGHT be gig worthy. Though I've not used one yet, so I don't really know what it'd be like for gigging.
Did you buy the one from the GC in Middleton? I wanted that amp, but it got bought out from under me! Enjoy it!
@@thisperfectworld I ordered mine from Thomann
My neighbors peeking through the window right now trying to figure out what that glorious tone is
My neighbor's wife literally pressed her tits against my living room window while this video was playing!
@@paulanderson771 damm
wow lol
@@paulanderson771 pissing pure excellence I see.
Mine to haha
Well, from my own experience Peavey are super reliable amps. Been using this amps and some expensive ones for some decades, and I can tell that in reliability they beat everybody else.
My last Peavey was a Valveking212 and had no complaints in a decade!
Again, maybe not the best tone machine, but hell they are the most reliable.
Tip* change the speakers, use an extension cab and run your favorite pedals/emulators/etc in the front and you're going to be surprised!
Great video Ola
OOLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDD MAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNN! love the machine head riffs
Sounds wayyyy better than my first amp, and even my second amp.
Peavey has very underappreciated clean tones.
@@fredriksvard2603 in their price range, the bandit has excellent tones . But yes any good true tube amp will have better clean tones.
Thats what I was thinking when Ola played it clean
Thumbs up for a current generation Peavey Bandit review!
My first proper amp was a Peavey Bandit 112 red stripe from about 2002. Loved the sound, still got it.
@@seanvanrock Great amp. Never had the chance to compare it to newer amps in the same price range properly, though.
I had one of these before. It was a great amp to have so I could leave my main amp at the practice space.
I’ve had this amp for almost a year myself, i have it hooked up with 2 cabinet speakers and the quality is just amazing
i got this amp cheap because the knobs where dirty inside skiping setings. i took them off sprayed contact cleaner in the pots and it fix it.
It would be super cool to hear a warehouse veteran 30 speaker in this amp
I think legend v128 will be good enough
@@ascar66 I have the original Vypyr 75 watt amp and I put the Legend V128 in it..you are right,it sounds great.. 8 ohm speaker.
(I put some samples on my YT "channel")
USB also allows to edit presets and banks in the amp, with a simple yet outdated aplication. I didn't use it that much.
When I started meeting a friend to play some music "live" again, it occured that my VIP-1 couldn't match his VIP-2 in "loudness war", so I (just recently) sold my Peavey VIP-1 and got myself something louder. :)
Would love to hear this with a better speaker! It's so brutal already!!
Yes, please do that upgrade, I'm super curious to see how it turns out!
Busting out some Burn My Eyes era Machine Head, nice! 🤘
We had the original Vyper, years ago. Glad to see they are still making a quality product!
I have an original Peavy Vyper tube 130 and it's a beast. I Brooke up the combo and made it into a head and 4x4 cabinet. It also has the big pedal board. I really should get the thing fixed and use it again.
Would love to see the difference in speakers!
I bought one of these a few years ago it destroys Line 6 and other modelling amps. Outside of a proper tube amp, this is great for everything up to small gigs.
Upgrade the speaker. Would love to see your results
Yo hell yeah dude. I bought mine last year and I knew in the shop it was gonna be a beast.
Great amp. Does more than metal too
