Mandolin Mondays #346: This new Octolindo octave mandolin has helped bring some new life to a bunch of old tunes I play like this classic bluegrass number "Shady Grove." And for folks interested, I'm playing with the tuning GDAD down tuned a half step and capoed up one fret--a trick I've picked up from some tenor banjo players who do this for a slightly smaller scale length and some tonal nuance. Nice, David! Would you make a video discussing some of the different brands of octave mandolins out there and features? Body style? Low price, mid price, high price? I saw that Eastman has A 300 series for about 800 bucks. I wonder if it compares with their 300 series of mandolins, which are on the lower end of price. I’d be shooting for mid range in price- A solid starter instrument with good action.

dude that is so nice. I have an octolindo, but i've sometimes been at a loss for how to adapt some of these fiddle tunes to the lower register instrument. definitely going to learn these arrangements

I'm interested in the "tonal nuance" given by down tuning and then capo-ing. Why is that? Why don't makers create mandolins that don't need this "trick"? It seems rather odd.

Dude that was great!! I'd love it if you did some octave mandolin lessons/breakdowns since I just recently got one and there seems to be kind of a lack of resources for tune arrangements...keep it up though!
