  • Up to Royal Victoria Park this morning to bid farewell to an old friend of the city who has been a regular visitor for many years.
I am talking about Carter's traditional vintage steam fun fair which is back in Bath for the very last time as it makes its final tour of the country.
This family business includes over 70 years of traditional British fairground rides and side stalls which have been lovingly restored using traditional techniques. There's a range of rides suitable for toddlers to big kids which date from the 1890s to the 1960s.
The man in charge is Joby Carter and l wanted to know why now was the time to sell up and move on - and what would happen to the fair.
The fair opens daily 11- 7pm and is here in Bath until Monday, August 29th with free entry every day.

I was there when it was at Englefield Green from October 1 to October 2. It truly is an absolutely great funfair. I spent over an hour filming the Gallopers thanks to my addiction to Band Organs.
I wish them luck on getting it it's new home for all generations onward to enjoy and praise for it's exquisite vintage-ness!

Very good interview. I would like to thank Joby and his family for bringing us a very unique funfair experience over the years and wish him all the best for the future with the hope his beloved fair finds its forever home. Loved riding the skid and giant octopus ride at Lichfield recently. The fair always has a lovely friendly atmosphere.

Terrible shame that all the rides have been sold off separately and that Carters Steam Fair will never operate again. So much of Carters family history in that fair and so unique.

How about getting in contact with someone from the Great Dorset Steam Fair and see if they or people they might know can help preserve this

Joby, you are a true showman. These showmen today are nothing more than glorified machine operators.
You gave them you're set up and they'd be lost.
It would be to much hard work for them.
I'm a retired Wall of Death performer and 11 years ago I stayed in your yard as I was riding for the Messhams wall of death.
I hope all works out for you and you find a place to set it up. Either way, you're father would be very proud of what you have all done since his passing 👍

A fair on Barry island they could buy a car park?

Barry island already has a big fair and another small fair right next to it on the promenade which is permanent, I highly doubt this would draw many people in a car park, they need a proper location for these unique rides

The council have ruined Barry island nazi health and safety messages every 15 minutes barked out from the many speakers, it’s deserted most of the time now very very sad ☹️
