I went winter camping in the middle of October in Wyoming last fall. The nice thing about winter camping is that you can do it any time of the year in the Rocky's.

Wood stove and canvas tent combo is great for drying out clothes and gear after a hard day's hunt...don't forget butter makes everything better. We put 3 or 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter in our last hot drink of the day to keep us warm when the stove dies out in the night. Looks like a great trip, especially with llamas in tow.

You need to mention one of the most important things, if you have a heat source you need a cot, if you sleep on the ground you will be very cold as heat rises and a cot will give you that edge.

    Safety's important in the back-country; on-foot or on a mounted-hunt.
My cousin's husband disappeared 30-yars-ago during a guided elk hunt in the Colorado back-country.
He got separated from his party while hunting, and they never did find him.

Too bad you guys didn't get in another day.I think camping when it's wet and sloppy is harder than camping in the cold.In the cold it's easier to stay dry .If you're dry it's easier to stay warm .Hard to that when you're wet.A comfortable camp can make any trip alot more fun.....thanks for the tips and sharing your fishing trip with us.

Having camped in the winter in the Canadian Rockies, Northern Alberta, and finally Ontario I agree 100% with your 5 tips. My wisest investment was a sub zero sleeping bag, and a closed cell foam sleeping pad. I have camped with and without shelter, including blizzard conditions and freezing rain and been very comfortable. Keeping body heat is pretty much the number one priority.

That is some serious camping there. Wow, thanks for commenting. I hope your winter wasn't to brutal this year. Our winter here sure was a tough one.

Excellent video I might ad that a silk liner for your sleeping bag is a must it increases temp by about 10deg and keeps bag clean as I only camp cold tents no heater I use a thermolite liner also which add 25 degrees to my 10 degree bag my wife prefers a fleece liner which gives about 20 degrees I also place the clothes I will be wearing the next day at the foot of bag to keep feet warm and prewarm my clothes foam pads work best in cold as I have sleeped out on snow with just a goretex bag cover bivi and foam pad in fort Greely Alaska-20deg 🥶 pee in gator aid bottle and keep in bag if no heated water cover neck and head with neck gator and fleece cap just my little advice happy trails

We use sheepskin under our bags in lieu of pads. Works great and so comfortable

I use newspaper, but mostly cardboard on top of the cots we use and then place the bag on it all. Also I lay cardboard under the cots also. Both tips here are very good to keep one very warm. I use a threeseason bag, land a think wool blanket on top of my sleeping bag also and a wool stocking hat, and if needed longjohns. Most ties I never need the longjohns,

"Know the rules and regulations"... And you guys were in a day use area. Wupsie!! LOL!!! 🤣 Honestly, with snow that deep, I'm not exactly sure how you would know.

I know right:) That was the real kicker. There was nothing online and all the signs were covered up with snow. We were pretty confused, but I guess live and learn your local areas better.

There are all types. We used to make ours out of 10 oz canvas. Now you can buy them all over the place. Here is a link to one we trust: www.buckstitchcanvas.com/cowboy-bed-rolls/sleeping-bag-cover?cPath=12&zenid=t7kkd5dqh2r15f3gil7urtl5i4

i havent camped out of a tent much, but a dry, warm place to sleep will keep you hunting harder and longer. If your uncomfortable at night, cold, and damp you will probably get sick and go home early. I dont want to spend the money, but i am buying a pellet stove to run at night. Nothing worse than feeding the stove after it went out and if you are in Colorado and around Aspens, they burn out so fast and the wood doesnt throw much heat. Bring some coal, it burns up slower at night.

So I commented earlier about the wall tent with a sewn-in floor....guess I never caught the outside pic and it's a center-pole not a frame/wall tent, actually. Though I still think I'd prefer sod cloth and vinylized truck tarp. Could not agree more on a good stove. We've had.....trials in that that department.
Gimme a -20 bag....but I have as close to 0% bodyfat as you can get without being dead. And I still put a thin liner in the bag.

Kodiak Canvas cabin tent with a Mr Heater has served me well in single digits all the way to summer camping. A true 4 season tent. Canvas is the best material for tents. Only drawback is weight.

Look at Hilleberg. You will want something that can take a snow load. If you want something with a stove, look at tipi type tents like kifaru and seek outside
