I think it's time to verify that you guys know that Cordyceps is a type of fungus (mushroom). Fungus is considered to be one of the most intelligent organisms in the nature. They operate with a hive mind and can actually transmit information using the underground fibers. As for the mind control, it's real, but it's more like a neurological control, because when they studied the infected insects, fungus was in their neural system, but not brain, which means that the infected are fully awake, but have no control of themselves whatsoever. Yep, that makes it a 100 times worse to imagine
Fun Fact: The opening scene in Indonesia takes place on September 24th, 2003 two days before the premiere episode's events. In that first episode a short radio segment mentions "disturbances" in Jakarta. Much like the opening scene of the first episode. This episode also opens with more background of the Cordyceps virus. Showing its initial outbreak in Indonesia. Also, I'm so glad non-gamers get to experience this amazing story.
After watching the entire season, and then recalling back to the first episode, you realize just how f***ng lucky Joel, Sarah and Tommy didn't get infected.
FYI- these are just called infected. The ppl are still alive inside until a certain stage of being infected. The body clung to the wall in episode 1 and the dead ppl on the stairs in the museum in this. The 2 infected in the museum are called clickers with the mushroom face. That's when the fungus takes over your head and blinds you with a tough armor-like shell.
They're also the ones that Ellie said can "see" in the dark like bats... they "see" through echolocation with the clicking sounds they make. And like you said, the infection grows over their head like armor... the longer they're infected, the harder they are to kill.
Yea, remember when they was eating breakfast in the first episode and they was mentioning it on the radio and they was talking about the capital I think.
@@jamiehundle lol omgosh I play the games I replayed the 2nd one and replaying the 1st now and I lose my breath every time I fall into a hole and now I’m in the basement all of a damn sudden 🤦🏻♀️ lol especially when I barely have supplies lol
The infected are not dead. Just like the scientist in the first episode said, the fungus takes control of your body and does not allow you to die. The man on the ground must not have been dead, because he would not have gotten up. The body on the table in Indonesia had a bullet hole to the head, so the body was dead and could not get up.
@@Sannoz I think that is the intention of the story in the game. Yet, in real life, it was found the cordyceps in ants were not found in the brain. So they were causing the ant to move involuntarily through means other than their brains.
@Asia and BJ you all can not crank this series out fast enough. @BJ Your understanding this universe very very well for someone who did not play the games. @Asia you always do so well at understanding characters and emotions :)
Loved your reactions! Cant wait to see what you think of the rest of the season. Btw Bj don’t worry about Ellie she’s immune! They showed a poster in the first episode that said a person will turn within 15 min - 24 hrs after getting bitten depending on where the bite is. & there are also different types of infected, that’s why some are harder to kill than others
cordyceps is a real fungus and normally only attacks insects and can actually take control of their bodies even after the insect is dead so its very much like a real life Zombie. It doesn't affect warm blooded creatures like humans but in The Last of Us, it evolved with the warming of the planet and jumped to humans. Ellie is immune but you'll find out why in later episodes.
It's a blast watching you both react to this like newbies lol. Tess was such a good character. I enjoyed this one and good luck with the next one. Mycology: the study of fungi. Hello Runners, and you just got introduced to a "clicker."
The show is def more about the characters and human drama than it is about the "zombies" but it's very worth it. Great performances, sound, and cinematography.
Thanks, Asia! Thanks, BJ! 🧟♀ The next episode is super emotional... among my favorites of any series, from all-time. #ReelinWithAsiaAndBj #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO
Just for a frame of reference when she says to bomb the city it sounds big already until you realize that the greater Jakarta area has somewhere between 45 and 50 million inhabitants.
What’s awesome is how much they stayed true to the video game. Marlene is the same actress that did the voice acting. Also the people that played the clickers are the original ones that did the motion capture movements for the game.
So excited you are watching this. Filmed im my home province. Note that Calgary has 333 days of sunshine per year. You really notice it in the series. ❤
I love the opening to episode two for one simple reason- what makes it unique & shocking is that in most movies & shows it's the military that's all "bomb everything," but here it's the scientist saying it. She asks pointed questions and makes quick calculations based on her experience and the answers and she knows that mankind is doomed
I'm glad you guys are enjoying the series so far.. Spoiler free, just keep watching the series, and most of your questions will get answered in later episodes. This is probably one of the best video game to tv series adaptations that have ever been produced. The more episodes you watch, the further you will get drawn in. I'm definitely looking forward to season 2 as well.
Cordyceps is an actual fungus, it really exists. It just cannot survive in temperatures that are as warm as humans, but that is why the scene at the start of the series the guy in the 60s mentioned that when the world warms, the fungi will adapt, and be able to survive in warmer temps, including in humans.

Mycology is the study of fungi. Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi, most of which infect arthropods and takes control over them. It's a very interesting rabbit hole to dive into.

Asia better get a bigger blanket lol Love you guys, your reactions are the best. Also, get BJ some anti-itch cream since the clickers make his skin itch 😂
Mycology = the study of fungi. And, Asia, you find out the answer to all the questions you asked about the girl later in the series. Ophiocordyceps is a particular fungus that attacks ants and ends up controlling them. It can't survive in human beings, but in this series they assume it has mutated so that it can. The strands you see in the mouths of some of the infected are fungal filaments that have taken over that individual.
