Hi Chris I am a 16yr old engineer. I am the A1 for live theater and concerts at my school but I am interested in finding a bar similar to this where I could be an assistant to an audio engineer. Do you have any advice for someone like me who is trying to find a place to gain experience?

Offer to intern and run cable at your local venue. Knock on doors until someone lets you in.

I have a question..... how do you know they will be able to hear themselves once the drums start blasting if you set the voice levels first on the monitors?

9 times out of 10 they don’t ask to make the monitors louder and when they do I just make it louder.
The goal is to make the vocal the loudest track in the PA so between that and monitors they don’t need to hear the vocal louder.

Aaaah I see, so you check on the meter and nothing is louder than the voice, ever, that makes a lot of sense...@@chrishammillaudio

I never mix by the meter. I mix by ear.

How do you make sure the voice is still the loudest element without it present during the other components gain stage? @@chrishammillaudio

Practice. Knowing how my room sounds. Practice. Knowing how loud certain instruments need to be in the input gain vs how I know they’ll sound in the PA. Practice.
You soundcheck each instrument one at a time. If I did drums first, I would mix everything to the drums. I mix everything to the vocals because no one ever complains they can’t hear drums. If you leave the vocal mics on after you check, not only do you have an open line of communication to the band on stage, if any new instruments are introduced and feedback happens, you know the culprit.
