Watch a lot of your videos and your ability to hear a tune and process it into guitar is really brilliant. You have such a vast knowledge of music and are such a talented man! Keep up the great vids.
My interpretation is its punk in lyrical style and the instruments used, but often has the more strictly structure and chord progressions like pop music... so it strikes a chord with both audiences, heavy/relatable lyrics and a happy/fun sound
The word we might be looking for is "accessable." So much of the older punk we listened to in the 70's and 80's wasn't being played in public. Here in America.
I love the shout out you give Powell (drummer) on this vid! This album from start to finish has some of the best drums from them since he's taken over.
As the trend with a lot of Pop Punk bands, earlier stuff ends to be more angtsy and rage filled, and the older they get the more their songs are just a bunch of fun
A lot of Punk has always had something of a Pop aesthetic. From the Dolls and the Ramones to the Pistols and the Damned to The Decendants and NOFX and all points in between, its marrying that raw emotional sound to hooks and melodies. The Clash included Reggae and Ska influences as well so its always been something of a melting pot.
I am older geezer and I find that I really, and I hate admitting this like the pop punk feel. I think a better term for it might be hard pop. Garage band stuff with good vocals, although as old as I am, I can't keep up and have no idea what they are saying, I guess that hasn't changed much.
A lot of the lyrics in pop punk are hugely relatable for many people because the songwriters in these bands have been through similar shit in their lives to the rest of us, so there's an emotional connection that resonates with the audience. The music is generally pretty basic and predictable compared to other rock sub-genres and that's how it should be - we already know what to expect and we enjoy that sort of familiar, reliable comfort. It's fun, energetic, infectious, inclusive, vulnerable, earnest, harmless, tasteful and we live for it!
Here's to them I can't do any of it. Ahh the part where I wonder which settings are marked "soundsimilar" ? I swear I have been hearing this sound over and over to the point that I hope to never , ever, ever ever hear it again.
I love neck deep dearly, I will say their songs sound very similar so Justin your observation about punk intertwined with sickly sweet pop melodies is spot on. Saying that I would go to the ends of the earth for them, I love it.
Been listening to these dudes since probably 2014, currently one of most listened to over the last 10 years, they share playtime with Zeppelin, Floyd, Greenday and Blink everyday I’m at work, I’m 45, there’s an emotional connection I have with these bands, but hey, my friends don’t like any of it, still I hope they don’t stop recording, I’ll be there until they change so much I don’t enjoy it.
I saw them for the first time in the states back in 2015 or 2016 and there stage was facing the summer sun. Ben commented how unbearably hot it was. Said, “The sun is a f*cking laser beam” 😂
Yeah, nice and light pop punk. It probably makes people happy hearing this live at a party or concert because it's danceable and reminds them of something familiar they've heard before. 🙃
You actually got it spot on. Pop punk really doesn't make any sense. But that's why we all love it! It doesn't have to make sense. ITS JUST FUN! and gets the edge off. :)
This video has resurfaced at the exact right time as I saw Neck Deep play their biggest headline show at Ally Pally last Thursday and then saw Justin in Leeds for the live JHRA show on Sunday - both were epic 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Good explanation. I liked some pop punk when it became a thing and still like it. I now understand why the guys 10-20 years younger than me feel that way about it. For guys my age, a lot of us feel that way about NWOBM, thrash and for some, hair metal. Lots of happy memories before life became complicated.
Easily my favorite "modern" pop pnk band, well of this current era. Been following them since their early days back in 2014. Life's Not Out To Get You is a particular masterpiece of an album, well worth a listen
As much hatred as I hold in my heart for the bratty adult teen pop of blink 182 even I have to admit the drummer is shithot. It seems to be the only redeeming factor with this lot to.
I was thinking you should react to them. I was specifically thinking their first single, "It Won't Be Like This Forever," from their latest self-titled record. I never heard of them prior to hearing this song. It's become one of my all-time favourite songs. So good. One of my resolutions is to listen to it everyday or the equivalent of everyday. I've heard a number of their other songs. "Dumbstruck Dumbf**ks" is another gooder.
Pop punk has existed for 40s. Neck Deep has played festivals you’ve played at. I’m surprised you’re not aware. The term “pop punk” was used because Descendents were equally as influenced by The Beach Boys as they were by the Ramones during a period when hardcore was established as the punk norm (the ‘80s). Check out The Wonder Years. They were considered the leaders of the genre in the early 2010s and are an excellent live band.
I think like some people pointed out there's a familiarity or nostalgic feel to it. First thing I thought was that it reminded me a bit of Jimmy Eat World - The Middle. It doesn't really appeal to me (probably because I'm not big on pop in general), but each to their own. And yeah, Perth weather. A good chunk of desert goes through Western Australia. It's not fun, I remember. I'm in Melbourne - notoriously unpredictable weather, but much cooler overall. And I'll be at your show tomorrow night, can't wait! As a side note, I have an extra ticket if anyone's interested.
Considering that The Ramones kicked-off melodic punk back in the '70s I feel that JHRA cannot possibly be too "old" for pop-punk. Obviously, pop-punk superseded glam punk and bands like the New York Dolls, but that is inevitable because glam rock is far too dependent on clothing fashion to last for long. Neck Deep is possibly the predominant UK pop-punk band of today.
Good god I hate this kind of band. You're right, they all have great drummers - and they all sound very clean, well-behaved, quantized and auto-tuned, with nary a whiff of the threat, desperation or danger usually conjured by the term 'punk'.
Literally seeing Neck Deep tonight (Feb 1st)! They got me thru high school, man While I like this song, I don't LOVE it (yet.) The same goes for their drummer (I don't want to be mean, I just really loved their previous drummer Dani.) I've yet to listen to their latest album in full (I know. It's a few hours before the show lol) and the one before that was ok. They both have/had decent singles. But the albums The Peace & The Panic and Life's Not Out To Get You are amazing. In fact,, their whole catalog has gems that go hard ("What Did You Expect?" "Over and Over") and that are beautiful & sweet ("A Part Of Me" "In Bloom.") Kudos to them because they always try to stay inspirational ("Gold Steps" "Motion Sickness"), they run their own merch shop, & a few days ago they powered thru food poisoning & played a show. I love them ❤
@@Nuaex, To be fair to the Lost Prophets, it was only the lead singer, who is a vile thing. The rest of the band were innocent, and disgusted by his actions.

Yeah their most popular 2 or 3 songs are definitely more ballady stuff about grief and lost love, and they also had an album that while still having a pop punk influence was also heavily indie rock influenced, their earlier albums and this newest one is definitely more in your face pop punk
G'day Justin, Sam here. I was the bald moustachioed bloke in the hot pink fairy bread shirt near the front at the Fremantle gig last night - we shared a moment when you looked lovingly at me for half a millisecond while I moshed enthusiastically to the punishing opening bars of the Immigrant Song rendition, which was most appreciated. Thought I'd extend my gratitude for taking on the role of Rock Dad for us all and heavily berating the phone toting degenerates who frequently ruin The Moment. These kids gotta learn somehow. Keep it up ya filthy animals xox
I played music from my middle/high school days on my college radio show and was supporting to play The Darkness and The Struts near the end, but I decided to do a rant about the feud between Selena Gomez, Hailey Beiber, and Kylie Jenner feud. I talked about how the Jenners are bad role models for young girls and that the better role models are the female singers from those gothic/symphonic metal bands. Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, Cristina Scabbia. These are role good models. Not the Jenners/Kardashians.
I try to explain this to people and they just don’t understand. It’s why I can’t comprehend what’s so great about Taylor swift or anyone. No substance, no soul no nothing. Punk, and most rock music in general, has so much more to it and takes waaaaaay more talent
I dunno most pop punk songs are about leaving this town or saying goodbye and stuff. Can you give any examples? Not flaming you or anything I just don't see it.
@@onionheadguy7094 you have clearly only listened to the “hits.” The songs you’re describing make up about 2% of pop punk. Go in depth on All Time Low, State Champs, blink-182, Sum 41 and yes even Neck Deep. You’ll soon realize that there’s soooooo much more depth
@@diablito301 you’re not wrong, Green Day being the prime example of that. That’s why I don’t listen to them much anymore. There are quite a few groups I stopped listening to because I feel they lost their depth and their reason for making music to begin with. Fall Out Boy is another example. It’s just turned into nonsensical bullshit for them

Hi Justin. Long time listener, first time caller. Saw you at metros freo last night. Sorry about the heat. Awesome show, really felt the joy. BTW that transition from fade out to holding my own was pure class (chef kiss)
Neck Deep were one of the heads of the 2012-2016 kind of reblossoming of Pop Punk along with bands like The Story so Far, State Champs, The Wonder Years, Real Friends and Knuckle Puck, Tumblr and Twitter were big catalysts for it, especially Tumblr since it was where a lot of the kids who were seen as weird and grew up loving bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, Greenday, MCR, Fall out boy and the likes were hanging around. I think Pop Punk just gives a nostalgia kick paired with usually great music, a lot of the lyrics are usually based around what have become pop punk clichés (hating your hometown, girls and heartbreaks, good times with friends) but it also mixes so much from alt as whole, depending on the band you have influence from Emo, Metal, classic Rock, pop and even rap/hip-hop. It also really doesn't take itself serious a lot of the time, bands like Neck Deep were great at using this for marketing, some of the jokes that became synonymous with them were self-deprecating jokes usually taken from the consensus of gate keepers who hated Neck Deep getting big and would argue with Neck Deep fans about how they were shit, #GenericPopPunk was one of them, but the other famous one is probably Neck Deep are shit mate, Ben's dad owns a record label and they ended up being great merch designs which Tumblr pretty much advertised for them, at the time Neck Deep Generic Pop Punk and Man Overboard's Defend Pop Punk were probably too of the most reposted merch designs on that website atleast within the alt music space. It also really helped their second album, Life's not out to get you, is still seen as one of the greatest modern Pop Punk releases and is regularly put up there with releases from the classic gods of Pop Punk like Blink 182, Greenday, New Found Glory. Their numbers properly blew up during Covid though, when one of their songs off their 3rd album, that dealt with Grief went viral especially in the Phillipines, I think their numbers tripled, and have been steadily going up since, the song (wish you were here) also leapfrogged December which is a Pop Punk ballad about losing love and regularly sees a massive listener jump in the winter. It also helps they're really really good live.
Also new wave emo/Midwest emo is seeing a similar hyper resurgence right now, with older bands like Modern Baseball getting new fans even 6-7 years after they broke up, and new bands like Hot Mulligan selling out shows all over the world, would be cool to hear you give Hot Mulligan a listen in the same vein as this one, this resurgence seems to mainly be stoked by Tiktok which I also see your clips on a lot!
Justin, I'm fast approaching 50 and love Pop Punk. Yes even the new stuff. It's a large umbrella genre, not only this stuff but also some emo, easycore, post-hardcore, actual punk and metal are included. Neck Deep's 'The Peace and the Panic' is considered a modern classic of the genre. You should listen to my favourite song by them, Wish You Were Here, it's so melancholic it brings a tear to my eye. Another great song by them is called In Bloom. I love Pop Punk because precisely because of the clash - the harshness and the sweetness, there's so much misery in the world it brings a burst of joy into peoples lifes. Also it gets teens into playing guitar, which in my book, the world needs more of.
I’m an old school rocker, but I also fell in love with pop punk in the late 90s, early 00s. I love the music but I’ve always thought the term isn’t right. “Melodic Punk” would be better. Bands often have a punk attitude, but with a better ear for a tune than classic or hardcore punk. Most pop punk musicians grew up as rock and metal fans too. You can see the influences when you see them live
I feel like I’ve heard heard this exact same song played 100 times by 100 different bands. On a first listen I already knew what chord, drum fill, vocal melody etc. they were going to do before they did it 🤷♂️. But hey. If people enjoy it..? Coo
@@MariaFrancesca I know some people in Cairns who work in Marble Barr during the summer months and they get used to it. Absolutely amazing how they cope. @@theskidmarkoforion4829 Underground sounds sensible in a climate like that. And yes, to a certain extent temperature is relative and you get used to a lot of stuff. Neck Deep are badically the archetype for the 2010s pop punk sound, i love the new album and some of the songs hit on some great political points (which also puts some punk into it) this album is a brilliant evolution of their album Lifes not out the get you. Its a continuation of that sound along with alot of evolution from the last 2 albums which were a little more experimental
Every time I hear the phrase "pop punk" I involuntarily instantly shite my trousers. I was watching this video whilst in the changing room of a posh suit shop. This is going to be a tough one to talk my way out of. I might try the old "that shit was already in the arse of that trousers", or the "that shites not mine" excuse. Wish me luck.
As someone who became a teenager at the height of blink 182s fame, I really never cared for this style of music. I never thought about it but the “pop” side of pop-punk never felt like it was mentioned much. It always felt a bit like corporate counter culture. Sure the music was important but how you dressed and where you hung out at the mall mattered too. I also remember every studio in the area could make your band sound just like this. Funny enough, the darkness was one of the bands that gave me hope for rock and roll during this time period.

Totally right about a great drummer elevating this sort of music from blah to good.
I think this is taking off because it sounds like early 2000s pop punk and people have missed that sound since web driven music media took over
I love the shout out you give Powell (drummer) on this vid! This album from start to finish has some of the best drums from them since he's taken over.
Gotta love the props given to Powles!! ❤️ Has had big shoes to fill since Dani’s departure and he’s been crushing.
A lot of Pop Punk songs are heavily influenced by and can easily be described as Power Pop as well
A lot of the lyrics in pop punk are hugely relatable for many people because the songwriters in these bands have been through similar shit in their lives to the rest of us, so there's an emotional connection that resonates with the audience.
It's the kind of music that you make memories to in your young teens/early 20's, simple as that imo
Here's to them I can't do any of it. Ahh the part where I wonder which settings are marked "soundsimilar" ? I swear I have been hearing this sound over and over to the point that I hope to never , ever, ever ever hear it again.
Their song and video "Gold Steps" is fantastic!
It's sounds just like a sped up blender filled with pieces of Fall Out Boy, Blink, Sum 41, AAF, etc.
Snotiness. Great word.
I think the answer to why? is simple its just fun and feels good ! right?! love your commentary to this I enjoy the honesty and sincerity !
I was late trying to get a ticket for Fremantle last night. Thank you so much for always making the effort to come to Perth when you’re in Australia, not every band/artist can/ does ..for logistical reasons. Yes, 43 degrees again today 🥵 Hope to catch you next time you are over 🤞
I really need "there's a drum set in the cafeteherriah" for a ringtone. For whatever reason it's amazingly funny. 😄
Wait till you get to Brisbane next week & feel the humidity with the heat! Can't wait to see you then! 🤘
I have relatives in Burleigh Heights 😊
I grew up on pop punk before progressing on to the Metal genres. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
The story so far miles better you should check them out next time
YES!!!
Seeing Neck Deep on here is nuts. Fuckin love it. I'm supposed to see the Saturday but I've fallen sick 😭😭😭
In fairness, the whole album is brilliant. Neck Deep just know how to write a good song without overcomplicating it.
Us Millennial have taken over. These young lads are approved. Emo elder, out.
For me, I think think it's the sound of pop punk that reminds us of being a young teen. Lots of happy memories, before life becomes complicated.
Have you listened to in her own words, they're the best doing it imo. Stand Atlantic is great and yours truly also.
@@lookforthegood1IHOW are incredible💪🏻
Pop punk is kind of like the darkness but consistently strong melody across all songs and records
Pop punk is just a fun genre imo. No Pressure is another great modern one or Belmont!
Welcome to the joy (pain) of 40+ degree days in Australia’s summertime 😂 I’m over it & am yearning to move somewhere very very cold haha.
Over the ditch, I struggle with the high 20's. Looking over at you guys during the weather, I feel for yas. Heat is yuck!
It's stupid hot. It's completely normal for summer, but, I'll still complain about it. 😂😂😂
I love justin, but he really is committed to the whole "boomer rocker" schtick
@@killsims Uh huh. Glad you have that straight in your own mind. What I said has nothing to do with him being a boomer.
Neck Deep is one of the best bands I've ever heard.
Neck Deep are top! “Life’s Not Out to Get You” and “Wishful Thinking” are so goooooood
Literally seeing Neck Deep tonight (Feb 1st)! They got me thru high school, man
While I like this song, I don't LOVE it (yet.) The same goes for their drummer (I don't want to be mean, I just really loved their previous drummer Dani.) I've yet to listen to their latest album in full (I know. It's a few hours before the show lol) and the one before that was ok. They both have/had decent singles. But the albums The Peace & The Panic and Life's Not Out To Get You are amazing. In fact,, their whole catalog has gems that go hard ("What Did You Expect?" "Over and Over") and that are beautiful & sweet ("A Part Of Me" "In Bloom.")
Kudos to them because they always try to stay inspirational ("Gold Steps" "Motion Sickness"), they run their own merch shop, & a few days ago they powered thru food poisoning & played a show. I love them ❤
dani was a naughty boy though, a little bit lostprophets if you get my drift
@@Nuaex WOAH that's news to me 😮
@@Nuaex, To be fair to the Lost Prophets, it was only the lead singer, who is a vile thing. The rest of the band were innocent, and disgusted by his actions.
@@Nuaex,
I just researched that. The allegations were not against Dani, but another band member, who quit the band. The matter was dropped, because he didn’t do what the 15 year old girl said he did.
Let’s not spread misinformation. It’s uncool.
@@SuziQ. yeah I remember hearing that. That comment made me think Dani got accused also
Neck Deep is so good that even one of the chicks from Blackpink covered Decembers acoustic
Pushing Daisies. Really good.
OFFICIAL REQUEST📝:
Please, would it be possible inviting Roger Taylor to a long form podcast and ask him his opinion on this music genre among many other superb questions?
It would be f***ing great!!!😁
I’ve been thinking about that too!
Which one?
Hats off to the studio engineer(s)! It's got such a big - no, HUGE sound. Pseudo-punk is not really my thing, but this song is kind of undeniable.
I think Justin would find some tracks from thier previous album a little more interesting to react to, All Disortions Are Intentional was definitely a more varied album than the new one.
Sounds a lot like early blink-182. Poppy and fun but I don’t know that I would necessarily call it punk;but it’s fun for sure!❤
I like Neck Deep but they reaaaallly don't sound like early blink-182. Idk how you can listen to Dude Ranch etc or even Enema and hear any comparison
@@RSgaming1337from most what I’ve heard (excluding this) they sound like later Blink, like if Blink kept making I miss you, but maybe that’s only their most popular tracks
Yeah their most popular 2 or 3 songs are definitely more ballady stuff about grief and lost love, and they also had an album that while still having a pop punk influence was also heavily indie rock influenced, their earlier albums and this newest one is definitely more in your face pop punk
Too much bloody sweetness. Corporate punk rock sucks.
GREAT SHIRT! But then again, all shirts look good on you because you’re so damn pretty! 😻💕💋
The weather this week has been horrid!! Thanks for coming to Perth and gracing u with your magnificent presence! 🖤🕺🎵
Pop punk is musically polished and catchy but has more to say lyrically (usually) than most modern pop. I love it.
I try to explain this to people and they just don’t understand. It’s why I can’t comprehend what’s so great about Taylor swift or anyone. No substance, no soul no nothing. Punk, and most rock music in general, has so much more to it and takes waaaaaay more talent
@@kurtisdelonge3372 but there’s so much soulless over produced “punk” too
I dunno most pop punk songs are about leaving this town or saying goodbye and stuff.
It’s just turned into nonsensical bullshit for them
Felt like I was watching Phil Lynott and his mirror scratch plate when you were playing the theme. blinded by the light!
That is so inside! When I was like 14, I sat second row right in front of Phil and his sweat was bouncing off that mirror scratch plate right onto me. Bonus is they got to play a full 2 hr opening set bc Blue Oyster Cult's equipment got lost. I was really in heaven
Blinded by the Light is a song we might never hear reviewed! 😅
00:48 Because The Darkness landed to give an amazing show!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
😉
Drums really are great. The rest feels super basic, but it fits the genre
Hi Justin. Long time listener, first time caller. Saw you at metros freo last night. Sorry about the heat. Awesome show, really felt the joy. BTW that transition from fade out to holding my own was pure class (chef kiss)
First time caller 😂✌🏽
Yes, very poppy, however, fun. Great drummer. Enjoy ❤️
DO MORE NECK DEEP
I like neck deep. I saw them years ago in New Orleans, and it was a really fun show.
If it doesn't feel punk enough, then it's power pop.
There are literally 20 bands like this in every town, and yes the drummer is as good.
The Ramones played punk with good melodies but nobody dares call them pop punk
I feel like I’ve heard heard this exact same song played 100 times by 100 different bands. On a first listen I already knew what chord, drum fill, vocal melody etc. they were going to do before they did it 🤷♂️. But hey. If people enjoy it..? Coo
I like them. Never seen them before. Sound good
Why haven't Neck Deep written the music for Wrexham football club? Seems like a great opportunity for both parties
Isn't that kind of heat dangerous... I think it could be dangerous 😅 Stay cool!
It’s normal in Perth during the summer. Should go to Marble Bar where it can reach 55c in summer 😮😮
@@theskidmarkoforion4829 Would kill me on the spot 😅
@@MariaFrancesca I know some people in Cairns who work in Marble Barr during the summer months and they get used to it. Absolutely amazing how they cope. Example in Darwin they have underground houses as they keep cool in summer…although it never falls below 27 in winter. I would love to live there.
@@theskidmarkoforion4829 Underground sounds sensible in a climate like that. And yes, to a certain extent temperature is relative and you get used to a lot of stuff. It's 1 C here right now, and it actually feels pretty balmy compared to the -25 C just a few days ago. 🙂 It occasionally gets around 30 C here in summers, and that WILL incapacitate me for the duration 😀
Not as dangerous as those huge spiders that don't move for days... until they suddenly drop on you! Or those spiders that hide under the toilet lid... waiting! :0/
Pop Punk is a lifestyle dude. if you're born around 1990 +- 5 years you know.
If Justin was 25-32 years old currently, he would be a pop punk kid.
Funny enough, the darkness was one of the bands that gave me hope for rock and roll during this time period.
pop punk is liked because its tempo melody and gritt. lyrically you can take it anywhere too. its got enough nuts but its not doing to much.
Justin Hawkins doing a video on Neck Deep never thought I would see the day. Great band
