Frenchman in his thirties here. Pretty Woman remains, to this day, one of the most delightful romcoms ever made. Everything about it works. It's one of those films that make you think, when you take a look at what's being made today... "yeah, things are not getting BETTER"... ^^; The duo is perfection. The girl is strong and never preachy, and the guy learns from her but doesn't turn into a beta male at the end. It's pretty conservative, which is fine by me. Roberts was at the peak of her beauty. Like you said, that damn hair, that volume, Jeez. Oh, and Laura san Giacomo deserved a better career.

as others have pointed out, if you want to understand why women used to swoon over Gere so much you need to go back and watch American Gigolo (1980), and An Officer & A Gentleman (1982). Both were big hits (Gentleman was a literal SMASH at the box office in '82). Gere was in his early 30's in these 2 movies, and they made him a superstar. By the time they filmed Pretty Woman Gere was already in his early 40's, though he was still very popular with women audiences in regards to movies.
Also of note, Julia Roberts was relatively unknown when she did this movie. She had done a couple of small films before this, but nothing big at all. Pretty Woman is what MADE her. And another interesting part of the story is that Richard Gere was on the fence about even doing the movie. The director was trying to convince him to do the movie and had him meet with Julia Roberts (again pretty much unknown at the time). Gere met her, and as they were getting to know each other the director (Gary Marshall) called to see how things were going etc, because if Gere would have said no they would have possibly had a hard time getting the movie financed. That's how Hollywood works, the big movie studios don't like to put movies in theaters without established names, and by this point (although his career had slowed down some from its zenith in the early/mid 80's) - Gere was still an established leading man in Hollywood with several hits under his belt. So Marshall (the director) calls Gere to see how things are going and to see if he likes this relative unknown actress Julia Roberts etc, and Roberts hands Gere a hand written note while he's on the phone.
The note simply said "please say yes". Gere did and the rest is history.

Great job ladies , and Julia R has her breakout role. The necklace that Vivian wears to the opera really cost $250,000. While filming, a security man from the jewelry store equipped with a gun was constantly standing behind the director. So many actors were auditioned for GERE's role AL pacino turned it down even tho he loved the screenplay, and Chris Reeve was upset during his audition as no one was serious supposedly, when he read and ripped the script afterwards

Ok. You asked! I saw this with my wife back in the day. I really liked this movie. Still do. We both liked it. So much so that we bought it on VHS. Then DVD. Always a favorite. I remember reading an article all these years later and the interviewer asking Julia Roberts if her still being tied to this movie by forever being called Pretty Woman no matter what the circumstance bothered her. And Julia gave the most candid, matter of fact real answer I'd ever heard on the subject. She bluntly said, 'Let me think. Um, hells no. What's the alternative? Being called Mediocre Woman. Or That Old Whore. There are worse fates in this world than being condemned with the lasting label of Pretty Woman.'

    Pure magic on celluloid.
There were so many cinematic callbacks to this movie throughout the years speaking to its influence. One of the best was oddly in 2000's SHE'S ALL THAT. When the leading girl says to the main heart-throb guy their magical moment getting together finally 'is some kind of fairy tale. Like Pretty Woman and I'm Julia Roberts. I mean, except for the prostitution part.'
Gere and Roberts super natural and effortless banter plus crazy chemistry has lost none of it's power.

I think what you might have noticed as “Desert” at the Formal Dinner scene was a little Crème De Menthe or Mint Sorbet traditionally brought out to clear the pallet in between courses. Part of the joke with Vivian frantically trying to get another bite of it before it was being removed by the waiter is that it’s not really part of the meal and isn’t designed to be finished merely used. Kind of like mouth wash that one swallows. Thank you both for the lovely reaction to this beautiful romantic film! Cheers!

That wasn't desert / ice cream. It's what's known as a palate cleanser. ( a spoonful eaten ) Between courses. clears the taste buds, so you are ready to fully experience the tastes & textures of the next course. ( relatively tiny but very expensive plates of food ). Put together in particular combinations to enhance, & meld flavors. Flavors heightened by the wine chosen for that specific course / flavor profile. Fine dining can have anywhere from 4 to ten courses. Each paired with different wines. Not rich myself BTW. Boyfriend is a fine dining chef.

Since you liked Here in this, watc h him in 1997 The Jackal, as an I.R.A.fighter in prison getting out to stop an assassin, the only movie Bruce Willis is a bad guy! Sidney Poitier in one of his last movies, and Diane Venora, one of my favorite actress as Koslova. And Him young in legendary drama romance movie, 1982 An Officer and a Gentleman, with great Louis Gossett Jr, and Debra Winger.
Guarantee you both will like both movies.
Both are as beautiful as ever 💖💋💖

A sorbet would typically be served as a dessert before the main meal. Its purpose is to cleanse the palate.

Not that you two will want to hear this but it might be a good story for young people out there. 4 years after this movie came out I was 18 and I booked a pro expecting to get the Julia Roberts look but instead what turned up was more Mama June. A cautionary tale for all, don't believe the movies 🤣

❤ Aside from the fact the absurd plot about some rich guy buying the affections of a prostitute and trying to convince us they are truly in love by the end, this is a very good movie that hits good comedic 😂 notes, well acted blowing up Julia Roberts to superstar status after I think first noticeable movie with MYSTIC PIZZA (total chick flick). This is also not only a fairytale, but a modern take on MY FAIR LADY as well with JR in the Eliza Doolittle role. Natalie the better, prettier red headed 👩🏻‍🦰 Julia Roberts
The song by Roy Orbison “Pretty Woman” is one of the best parts
That’s great Michelle you finally saw this movie that’s probably considered a classic by now. Loved your awesome genuine reactions from the both of you and I am sure you will watch it again because it is re-watchable after some time has passed as Natalie found out
