I would be very excited to have a B5 reboot. The original was great but it was a complete series. An entirely new storyline and new alien races would work.

Battlestar Galactica reimagined the original very very well. They changed it up enough to make it a completely different show despite the same premise.
This is what B5 needs to do.

I like original B5 and I have met every major actor from the show when I was working for Science Fiction convention. On a reboot it would be hard to find a cast as good as the original. I would like to see what would have happened in the show if Talia was not written out of the show because of the actress leaving. I also wonder how the show would have turned out if give the original 5 season plan. So much was smashed into season 4 to finish off the Shadow War only to have another year of the show.
I think if the took the old scripts and updated them to take out some of the really cringe lines of dialogue, it would work.

No, it wasn't. it was a continuation set further in the future, TOS remained canon. a reboot wipes the slate clean and starts again.
This is why it is a safe bet that any given reboot will fail, they start off by alienating the actual fan base.

I'd absolutely give it a chance if JMS is running and writing it. I didn't end up liking Discovery much, but I still gave it a few seasons of watching just to give it a fair shake. I think B5 could be fine if it had a long enough runway to get the story off the ground.

They have to do a TNG-like move and keep the original canonical and tell a new story after the original in the same universe

They should put it on HBO. I feel like Babylon 5 aesthetically suits HBO and the serialised storytelling that Babylon 5 pioneered became the template for HBO's success and I feel like HBO owe it to J Michael Straczynski. I think a Babylon 5 reboot could be made (like The Expanse) for a fraction of what HBO normally spends on a TV series and I've always wanted to see a space opera produced by HBO.

@mojonojo3 Babylon 5 has many similarities to Game of Thrones, and I've previously called it the Original Game of Thrones in Space (I've also described The Expanse as Game of Thrones in Space). With the right promotion and production values, it could be quite successful on HBO and for a fraction of the price of Game of Thrones.

@@SoshiMECH but the HBO audience wouldn't watch sci-fi. There was a period prior to COVID when they were commissioning sci-fi for MAX, that didn't survive. HBO is now second run movies, reruns of curb your enthusiasm sex and the city and Kate Winslet shit comedy parodies of Enver Hojha.

@@mojonojo3 Westworld and Last of Us were pretty successful. I assume you might mean space opera which is so far unproven on HBO and would be something new for them. Wasn't the original Babylon 5 series and animated movie streamed on HBO Max with some success? This begs the question if you don't think the audience that watched Game of Throne, Westworld and Last of Us among other high quality/concept Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Drama shows are Babylon 5's demographic, then what demographic is? I think with most other streaming services (Netflix etc.) Babylon 5 would get lost in the crowd. HBO could/should/would make a big deal out of a Babylon 5 reboot coming to their service and having brand recognition (Game of Thrones, Westworld & Last of Us) seems to help a show and Babylon 5 has brand recognition.

At this point a new b5 series is a believe it when we see it sort of thing as it had its time but if they redo it then they should make it look much cooler better station more modern or post modern look and have it so the station doesn't need to spin as that was a problem i noticed in the first one when it cam to battles with the station it did not seem to show it spinning. maybe it was just me but even when they showed the fron window in the command so put in artificial gravity plating on that station as certain changes like that would only make it better.

With present development with Star Trek and Stargate tehre´s no room financialy and prakticaly to produce antything worthwhile. So many show wait for reboot, some clearly deserve it others quastionable it´ a lot of time and effort first and resources second put in, wich might not be so satisfying !

I'm 50/50 on reboots. I would prefer a continuation of the universe itself. Obviously B5 would have to be gone after all this time. But if there was a way to bridge time passed and a transition to a new show name with animation then come in later with a new live action show. Maye have a few characters back but mostly a new cast.

Amazon could well think StatGate (a MGM property) would look more promising. StarGate spun off a couple other successful series. Babylon 5 tried 2 spin offs that died, and even the old fans are dubious about watching a reboot. I.e. studios think Babylon 5 is not a frachisable universe like Trek or StarGate, but rather it’s one great story with no follow on or spin off potential.

  • @tscchope
    @tscchope 3 місяці тому +1

To be blunt, the CW passed on a reboot because it was not viable as a study they commissioned said that half the Babylon 5 fanbase was just not interested. It's just Legend of the Rangers moved over to be the main Babylon 5 story with characters from the main show, recast, obviously. Netflix are more interested in The Expanse, but that depends on what happens to the Rights. Amazon are also waiting to see how that situation resolves. Bezos really likes the Expanse. They've also got Stargate. Apple has Asimov's Foundation series. I think they're butchering it, but the show is popular. Disney has Star Wars. Netflix, unlike Syfy, could afford to buy the Babylon 5 Rights that Warner's have. Yes, Netflix could end up as the only major without a SciFi show. Warner Bros Discovery seem to be much more interested in developing a live action TV show for Harry Potter than in anything SciFi.

CW passed as they have shifted to lower production cost TV like reality stuff and sports under new owners. No longer fits with their channel vision.

Most if not all the studios and streaming companies are tightening their belts as the whole economics in the entertainment industry and well across the board is hurting, 2024 and the next year or two may not be open for scifi series that could need more costly SFX. The money just isn't there.
Reboots don't normally work. Yeah there's the odd one or two make good first impressions such as BSG, but we've seen too many make a big splash but there's no endurance to see it through to the end. This was clear with BSG where the creators admitted they were calling it in to complete the show. I would counter that with Babylon 5 however as JMS has the got the whole arc to its conclusion developed so there's that.
The hardest thing I would say as an outside observer would be casting and keeping the DEI cancer away from the show. The original did a great job in presenting diversity in the future as it was without it being painfully obvious it's just included as a means to bash the audience over sociopolitical goals today. Original fans will be very cautious and critical at first over the casting but given the show has the original creator the audience with OG love will give the new cast a window to prove themselves and how they work off one another. Cast are usually genuine when they say how much of a 'family' they were and that really shines through in their individual and interactive acting. Audience picks up on this very early into a show. However way you slice it it's going to be a big factor in how this reboot will be accepted by original show fans because it will be very difficult to capture lightening in a bottle in relation to casting. We were very spoiled as fans because of the quality and dedication the cast had for their role and the show.
I keep saying it in regard to Babylon 5... I would much rather see a 'new show budget' go into remastering and digitizing the original still using the original 16:9 crew assets and redeveloping the 16:9 SFX, reprising the original show completely. Yes it's costly but nowhere it was 10yrs ago or even 5yrs ago and along with AI I believe Babylon 5 could have enough refurbishment using digital tech we have today so it could very well be seen as a whole new show. You wouldn't have to deal with new actors trying to fill the shoes of what the original cast created in the original. New audiences would see a new show, older fans would be the respect and the due the original cast and show deserves. Both would watch this 'new' show and there will be new sales of old and new alike. It could start a whole new revolution in bringing timeless masterpieces back to new audiences while showing respect for the old. Maybe that's still a bridge too far.

Babylon 5 sadly will always be a one and done franchise for the most part - that is part of its charm and curse. To reboot it would be to tell the entire story again and while it would be nice to see updated cgi and special effects, Nu-Trek has taught us that sometimes it's best to let sleeping franchises lie. If they could come up with a Babylon 6 storyline, then perhaps we'll be having a different conversation but to catch ligthning again in a bottle, not going to happen. Focus more on a sci-fi property like Andromeda where a vast majority of the population hasnt seen it and you already have a core concept of an idea to work with that truly deserves a reboot.

Like Beca was going to become the head of the pirates/corporations, Harper was going to the leader of half human half robot hybrids that they indroduced in one episode in the show, Tyr the leader of his people, etc. Was ambitious had things planned out but yeah, production and crap happening behind that show really showed on screen.

I would LOVE more stories in the Babylon 5 universe but do NOT want a reboot. Reboots suck !! New Trek was awful and even new Battlestar Galactica was good the first 2 seasons and then was meh. In addition it WASN'T Battlestar Galactica rather it was a new show with some of the same mythos.
With B5, yes Joe wrote a fantastic story but the actors made it happen. Who are you going to get to play Lando or G'kar ? Delynn without Mira ? Vir without Stephen ? To me it was like Quinto playing Spock, he tried really hard but sorry he isn't close to Leonard Nimoy.
Why not do Babylon 4 with a new Sinclair and a whole new cast ? I would LOVE that and so would most people.
