Star Treks future with or without Alex Kurtzman is a hot topic for Trekkies and the Paramount sale is key to the fate of all things trek.
So who the new owner is matters and it looks increasingly likely that will be Skydance. But what does that mean for Star Trek??

Get rid of Kurtzman and co, bring in Matalas in and real writers and get started on production of Legacy and retcon everything back into the Prime Universe. If he loved Star Trek so much he would've gotten Legacy off the ground.
Up until now, no one was sure who was going to own Paramount come this time next year. The merger held a lot of things up.
You act as if Terry went around Alex Kurtzman's back!
@@danja7691, Kurtzman was off working on his own project. Matalas was left to make S3 by himself. Got to make all those decisions without Kurtzman.
You would know this had you been paying any attention at all.
Um hacked discovery good you just don’t want woke ideas
I wouldn't even bother to retcon "nutrek"... I'd just ignore it and start making Trek as it should be... as if "nutrek" was an annoying incursion from a really annoying parallel universe. :-)
I think the only way Star Trek gets better is without Kurtzman and Secret Hideout.
Agreed! I hope Skydance would have the option of creating Star Trek Studios.
@@DonDonP1 They dont need to make Star Trek Studios. They have the IP to all the real classic trek. Just drop everything made since 2005 and make a new show set in 25 or 26th century.
@@KingValisFelix #startreklegacy
After star wars discovery tue red factor alex kurtzman should go wor a disney lucus film. Star trek discover tue red factor was 95% closer to star wars then star trek
Couldn't agree more!
I think getting rid of Kurtzman is imperative, but I would understand if they were planning to review the entire franchise before making any decisions, especially if they had not been paying attention to it and its fans' opinions since 2005, which wouldn't be a surprise if the current situation is relatively new. On the other hand, I don't remember anything that would indicate if they even care about what's done with it and just want it to make money.
Hmmmm...I just had a thought that is probably never going to happen, but it would be interesting if they came out with 2 different series, one by Kurtzman, and one by some old timers and/or younger people who remain true to the vision created before 2005 in the original universe. I would love to see how the ratings compare between the two.
Hopefully whoever buys Paramount will bring Star Trek back in-house rather than farming it out to Secret Hideout because for as long as Kurtzman is involved I have that sinking feeling we'll get more of the same. I might be a little less disillusioned with Secret Hideout if Terry Matalas takes the lead but I can't see Kurtzman's ego standing for that, which is a pity because for all I have many issues with ST Picard, the third series, which had many faults in terms of the lack of imagination in again making the Borg the baddy, did at least feel like Star Trek and it was entertaining.
I had heard Skydance had big plans and were going to do something extra special, especially with Star Trek... that single IP itself is worth billions. If Skydance listen to the fanbase, then they could already have a tentative roadmap, drop Academy and give us Legacy.
I think Starfleet Academy is supposed to be going into production in the summer time & they're building a set now for it.
Someone please set up a countdown video to when the Kurtzman Trek contract runs out so I can have it on my sidescreen for the next 18 months.
I will believe it, when I see it. 👁️👁️
Skydance has already been involved with Star Trek, so it's not a stretch for them to take over from Paramount. As long as they keep to Canon I'm good with that. I'd also love to see a Star Trek themed Amusement park. Kind of like what Disney did with Star Wars, except a Star Trek Themed area. That would be a blast.
Star Trek in my opinion needs to all come under one roof. One house. Not continuing to be in multiple suits like it has been.
There may be hope for Star Trek, yet!
Skydance is responsible for the recent Terminator movies...
Agreed!
@@Anarchist86ed So then Skydance has already terminated one franchise.
I wish it were possible to get a perpetual protective court order preventing Kurtzman from getting within 1,000 feet of, or having any communications with, any Star Trek production, past, present or future.
Shrek:(chuckles) Like that's ever gonna happen. What a load of -!!
Whatever is best so we get a season 3 of Halo. I know most here huge are Star Trek fans. I’m a fan but have really enjoyed Halo. It’s become prestige sci-fi TV. Whatever works to keep it going I am for. And I would love an update of The Expanse rights situation or,any possible future.
Thanks and keep up the great reporting we, your fans appreciate it. :)
So unlike you have have liked new Trek, but I do agree with you. I would have preferred Kurtzman to be out and bring Star Trek back into Paramount.
I’ve liked bits
@@scitrek Me, too!
So you like little miss perfect, never makes a mistake, the smartest person to ever live, Burnham, on Discovery? That character is so insufferable. Just once and I mean just once let her be wrong and have her mistake have dire consequences, because being right 100% of the time is not remotely realistic. She must be the only leader ever in any Star Trek show who has never been wrong and never made a mistake.
@@wildbill4496 To be honest, Saru is my #1 "DSC" character. However, "Prodigy" is my #1 current "Star Trek" show, even though it's as more sci-fi than "Star Trek" as my #1 "TNG" movie: "First Contact." #EnjoyWhatYouEnjoy.
Kurtsman and Secret Hideout are hacks but they can’t take the blame for everything wrong with Star Trek. That falls at the feet of Paramount and their mismanagement of the franchise. Paramount could have easily told Secret Hideout to change direction with Star Trek but they didn’t which shows that Paramount doesn’t really care about Star Trek and now it’s just about a dead brand like Star Wars.
Or, maybe Paramount liked what they were doing, just it's the old fans that didn't.
When you give fans what they want, good things happens. Fans asked for Pike spinoff and Strange New Worlds was mostly a big hit. Fans have mixed feelings about Star Trek Academy (not knowing what it will be), but Fans really want Star Trek Legacy. Whoever buys Paramount should listen to the majority of the fans and make Legacy which could be a hit, with Terry Matalas as showrunner. "Make it so".
In my opinion, kurtzman et al need gone. Terry Matalas is the better lead to run with.
But we shall see if that poison of DIE/ESG remains.
Season 3 of Picard proved that.
Sorry to tell you the truth, but they DEI stuff isn’t going anywhere in the industry.
@@Thermool Then it will continue to fail.
I think they've run Star Trek into the ground given that the movies and TV shows have been somewhat marginal and haven't really hit it out of the park yet I think with the writer strike and trying to incorporate too much of today's social Wellness weird stuff they've kind of ruined it if they went back to more of the roots exploration hi sci-fi and action keeping things somewhat neutral it probably would have been vastly more popular
Hopefully the merger can happen and hopefully the quality of Star Trek will improve
The simple solution is don’t renew Secret Hideout contact
Fixing Star Trek is every simple and easy. Just put the current Star Trek (or Fake Trek) into a different universe. They have already done the work for them by changing TOS Enterprise with SNW Enterprise and giving Spock a sister and by putting SNW Enterprise into Picard means Picard series is not part of the prime universe, so you just bring it back to Prime Star Trek universe.
I’m no writer, but can fix the problem
rest in peace Paramount studio anytime
Kurtzman hasn’t fixed his approach to Star Trek after all these years, that remains the biggest red flag to me 🚩 He couldn’t seem to learn why Discovery didn’t work out, and why 2 seasons of Picard he worked on were rejected by longtime fans. Beyond his writing blunders and directional mistakes, his Trek doesn’t feel like Star Trek; meanwhile Picard Season 3, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds accomplish this successfully. Fans loved them and so do critics. Kurtzman wasn’t directly involved in any of those as he was in Discovery and Picard’s botched season 2.
Any deal that keeps kurtzman and secret hideout is a bad deal
Warners buying/Merging With Paramount was never going to work, and arent they in debt anyway?
Am I right to be worried, Cutting the fat is the normal progression after a takeover, merger or buy out. Shows like Star Trek Discovery has been seen negatively by the masses, This means that Star Trek Academy may not happen either (I doubt the new owners would throw good money after bad) I wouldn't be surprised that the new powers that be axe that idea from the get go, Get rid of Kurtzman along with Strange New Worlds (Sadly) and any other related projects like Lower Desks that might be expensive to make right now, Getting the house in order first and foremost leaving a long delay before we see any new Trek, let alone seeing Legacy, I'd love Legacy to happen and we the fans need to shout that out, loud and proud to why we need a legacy show to Sky Dance.
Just a note: It's easy to break the contract with Secret Hideout before anyone comments!, just a little money to make Kurtzman go away, however having being brought out by SkyDance, nothing says that they have to honour the same deal /contract, I'd imagine Secret Hideout would have to make a new deal with SkyDance to continue, One I hope SkyDance decline. So I did some checking and was told this - The new owner can assume or reject existing contracts when a business sells or is taken over. If they choose to accept a contract, they become legally bound to fulfill the terms of the old agreement, just as the previous owner.
But my intelligence says that Skydance higher-ups don’t like him. He screwed them over somehow and they don’t like him and they want him gone so this is the nuclear option. I talked about a long time ago that if somebody came in and bought Paramount out or bought Star Trek out, it would be bye-bye for Mr. Man new owners can do what they want with the property in spite of previous contracts and Skydance higher-ups do not like Alex Kurzman. They want him gone GONE..
How did the stocks react to this question mark
Quick increase of 20% then drop of 15%
Hi Jay is they no more on the battlestar galactica series yet@@scitrek
Terribly, as it seems the class B shares will get diluted to finance the deal, while Redstone gets a 2 billion dollar premium on her class A shares, giving her a golden parachute. On top of that they're turning down a much better deal by Apollo.
What about a disco season 5 review? Most of the last 4 seasons were crap but the premise in season 5 is encouraging! Plenty of time for them to fuck it up though….thoughts?
I’m going to wait until ep 3. I’ve enjoyed first 2 though
Rating numbers on discovery are so low am surprised its still airing, Alex kurtzman isn't appearing to star trek fans at tall his projects with him involved are all messes he should of been gone years ago, his isn't a star trek fan all he wants to do is push the message pushing forced ideology over focusing on what star trek is! story's of scifi adventure seeking out new life and civilization going places where no human has gone, secret hideout jj adrams akiva goldsman alex kurtzman don't get it, I keep saying bring back rick berman brannon braga nicolas meyer terry matlas they know the formula there all right there ready to go I just don't get this companies like paramount it's better they sale because there messing up.
I'm not really interested in anything with the current production team. Part of it is I think they are profoundly overrated. Mystery boxes are inherently lazy and they helped pioneer the style. Mystery boxes aren't actually mysteries. They are poorly planned vague handwaves where the solution is often manufactured for the sole purpose of making people talk on social media.
Let the Kurtzman/Secret Hideout contract run out, DO NOT renew it, and send them on their merry way.
People may be concerned about Jar Jar Abrams directing future Star Trek films.
My obvious question is JJ did some great fun stuff earlier in his career (Alias) and JJ, Kurtzman and goldsmith were all involved in Fringe (great character driven SF), where did they all go wrong?
@@Scottlp2 It could be Paramount and CBS breaking up with the requirement for New Trek to have a minimum of 25% difference from the Prime Trek Universe.
You forgot Felicity!😅
@@dstarling61 Felicity as Admiral Jones in Star Trek could be interesting.
Excuse me, that's Darth Jar Jar Abrams...
Is your hat weather related? Or something bad going on?
That was my concern aswell. Hopefully it's just a fashion choice.
Sweet. Still US owned. Skydance Media, LLC is an American production company based in Santa Monica, California. Founded by David Ellison in 2006, the company entered a five-year partnership to co-produce and co-finance films with Paramount Pictures starting in 2009, and renewed the agreement twice extending to 2021.
Sorry guys s3 of Picard while better than the first 2, what wouldn’t be, was still pretty mediocre
You know, Kurtzman implemented what his vision of Star Trek is, and Academy should close this period out. Give Star Trek a fresh start. Whoever ends up with the property needs to get it completely under their control and approach it the way it was originally intended. The HOPE that we can be better as a species is sorely missing and I'll find it hard to watch if that doesn't return. Without that it's just a really expensive drama that doesn't stand out enough for me to pay for a streaming service.
As long as JJ Abrams and Bad Robot are out I might be interested in something new. Otherwise no.
Can someone clone Harve Bennett and bring him back to run Trek? Please...
We Want Him OUT... The Sooner Kurtzman is out the sooner Star Trek may be able to get back on track.
Well, I can tell you this it means the end of Alex Kurtzman, and it also means the end of all of his shows. From what I saw from another source, Skydance does not like Mr. Kurtzman and part of the deal. I will be willing to bet means Kurtzman is gone and they’re going to go through and they are going to everything that he did so you can Star Trek discovery goodbye you can kiss the entire JJ verse goodbye kiss lower decks goodbye you kiss prodigy goodbye you kiss Star Trek goodbye and that is a good thing because I understand that Alex Kurtzman did something bad to Skydance one time and they don’t like him they are going to erase him so precious section 31 is going to be gone legacy gone and they’re going to do Star Trek right
well, altered carbon and foundation are two strong indicators that they know how to produce tv-series, that are meant for the long run (altered carbon was cancelled by netflix, but it could have continued).
the thing that everyone expects from paramount, secret hideout, skydance, etc is: that is a franchise that survived a long time and built a lot of lore. that should not be a series or two, where the producers are on the whim of cancellation after every season (cancelling ENT was a huge mistake).
alex kurtzman can produce good sci-fi, he mismatched the tone for star trek (I think, discovery season 1 is very good sci fi, it's just lacking the special star trek flavor. the irony is, that others hit that flavor much better than him, especially visible in picard, where season 3 was good, the one season where he left control to somebody else).
If the Warner Bros deal is toast why talk about it, i knew about that already
Kirtzman along with JJ are the main reason the Star Trek franchise has died. Those a**holes need to go bye bye.
Bye Kurtzman and Abrams? I hope so.
I like this idea
No worries, the share holders and investors won't allow kurtzman at the helm
hi Jay💯👍
Maybe disney lucas film will pay alex more to make star wars movies?
Realy its looks a mouse try to by an elephant.
Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Drop Secret Hideout. Drop theae dreadful writers and that includes Matalas.
If it's got Alex Kurtzman. Then I have literally zero interest. I don't care to see a single show written by the people he and his people hire. They rid us of them, and all their horrible writing. Then bring in competent and knowledgeable people who actually treat the property with some respect and good writting. And i'd be back to watching. But I'm done with anything to do with Alex Kurtzman.
I would say that Paramount/Skydance should replace Kurtz *and* Secret Hideout as "Star Trek" partners. Yet, if Paramount/Skydance does oust Kurtz, but keeps Secret Hideout and renames it "Star Trek Studios," I'm OK with that.
aaaand ST keeps sinking - ppl in hollywood keep failing up
Is Skydance aware of the fan dislike for the product Secret Hideout is putting out? If they are savvy bunch you would think the writing would be on the wall for Alex Kurtzman.
Please, SkyDance, just have NOTHING to do with Secret Hideout and Kurtzman! I personally and many others will be far far far more critical of anything connected to any of that! For more Star Trek Just pretend nothing came out since Enterprise left, but as that is a prequel better yet go back to DS9 & Voyager and ask what next from there! Forget this altered IP. Find someone who loves the show and has no connection to any of this mess since (possible exception Frakes or Matalas). But whatever forget this altered continuity, forget prequels. SNW isn't bad but I'd rather something that distances itself entirely from this Moonves & Kurtzman branch which is based on both Disliking Star Trek.
kurtzman & bad robot must go he and others screwed up star trek. it should have stayed with the original cannon
of TOS the original series
He HATES star trek...he LOVES Kurt trek
