Ironically, I thought the Death Star run in Super Return of the Jedi managed it better. It helps they replicated the ACTUAL reactor shaft run from the film (right down to the moment the Falcon loses her radar dish) rather than just making shit up (IE the random Zero G troopers with the laser cannon).

I'm realizing that the music is a huge part of what made the original trilogy feel timeless. The action music always has an adventurous flare to it that keeps you thinking forward and the calmer songs always have an almost mystical undertone to it that reminds you that this is a fantasy while also fitting whatever momentary mood it needs to.

Literally the entire movie has been setting up that Luke is on a mission and he is going to sacrifice himself in the lion's den to get it accomplished ... and then throw in the immediately previous Luke scene where Vader dies in Luke's arms and Luke hangs his head in despair as the Death Star is disintegrating around him ... it practically screams that Luke is emotionally finished and now hopes to die with his father aboard the Death Star .... in the editing room you then string out the suspense with Lando escaping FIRST as the Death Star blows up around him, and then at the last second Luke's hijacked Imperial shuttle swoops out of the flames as the Death Star explodes behind him, giving not Lando and Nien Numb but a lone Luke the heroic beat at the end and letting the audience breathe a huge sigh of relief that Luke made it.
It's fantastic. Even before that, when you've gotta race to the next uplink station it really gets you in the mood ! So much better in this one than the 2nd game. The 1st game makes you feel like you're actually fighting towards something where as the 2nd feels disconnected... especially on the music front.
