How do you determine the length of cord for each project, please?

I design a macramé wall hanging in detail, so I know approximately how long I want the elements to be. I weave a certain pattern beforehand and measure how long it is and how much rope I have used; and from that experience I calculate how many knots I need to make and how much rope I will need approximately.

base wire doesn't have to be that long.just a waste of materials
