I’m pretty sure I am the only person to put that into my top 10 Michael but that album started a new musical journey for me. It was a great year for me
The Minutemen were a great choice. ♥️ I agree with your assessment of The Lonesome Jubilee. That's a very special album. That U2 album is one that my husband and I can agree on. I only recently discovered that Los Lobos album. ♥️ Take care.
Hi Melinda, I’m glad you have that Los Lobos albums. Their 80s albums are so wonderful. That is why I like Lonesome Jubilee, it was a mix of instruments that I had not listened to before So enjoyable.
I was obsessed with The Joshua Tree when it was released, i bought the sheet music and tried to learn all the songs on guitar and piano..my friend and i spent weeks playing the album in the car on road trips..my favourite was Running to Stand Still, i just thought it was one of the most beautiful and haunting songs i'd ever heard...For me, it was downhill after this and i never listen to U2 these days. Solitude Standing was a pretty good album..i saw Suzanne Vega in Birmingham, Michael Hedges supported her and he was incredible, best support act ever!!. REMs' Document was another i played, but got into after hearing Green. I worked at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham 1988/89 and the staff bought me a copy of Appetite for Destruction when i left. I got some vclt of Los Lobos from their later period. Great video Steve.
For me 87 was a year of changing musical taste. I was amazed how much I had from that year, all albums that still put a smile on my face. In the early 00s U2 had the album All That You Leave Behind that I obsessed over. That album really spoke to me. If you ever find some 80s Los Lobos it is worth grabbing, marvelous music Rob
Hello Steve, you are adventurous showing J. Cougar Mellencamp in the so called VC ! This album is excellent. I love it like the previous one « Scarecrow ». I have them since they are released. Same for Hiatt and Hornsby (that I saw in concert in 1988 in Belgium ). Los Lobos, I don’t have this one. Several artists that Idon’t know. Thanks for sharing. Bye. Bruno
Bruno, so true about Mellencamp getting no love. I did have most of his 80s albums I will get Scarecrow and Uh Huh again. Hiatt is another one you don’t hear much about. This list was more popular albums, at least most of them. It was a year of new musical directions for me.
My collection does tend to stray a lot Steve. 80s was big for me as I was in my 20s and now had some money to buy and enjoy more music. A lot of memories in those records
Steve, I just watched one of your videos and subbed your channel. Very well done video. Los Lobos of the 80s could do no wrong by me. They were such a fun group and their music still sounds fresh to my ears
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 thanks. us Steves gotta stick together. hahah. yeah although I’ve been aware of Los Lobos since maybe 1985 or so I never picked up any of their stuff until maybe 5 yrs ago. Then I started picking up anything of theirs I’d see. That one there is def my favorite. Been trying to catch them live but haven’t had the chance. Have you see them live?
Love your list!! Top picks are The Bevis Frond and The Lime Spiders!!!! I never could stomach Guns n Rose's, I would switch the tedious station every time I heard Axl.
A Bevis Frond fan, fantastic. He could sure play the guitar. For me Jeff that Lime Spider was such a huge surprise when I put that on. It just kept getting played
Your moving, why did I not know that? Same city, new place or going somewhere totally new? I have moved a lot in my life but the company moved me so I just had to sit around and let everyone else do the work lol
What a great year ! So much fun, great music.. I was living between the carribbean and Tahoe, and cassettes were still the go-to until I came home to North Shore for good and bought a great sounding Technics system with a CD player. Great showing of records from '87 !!
I never really got into cassettes. I had a few and I had a cassette player but I loved vinyl due to its large size. I didn’t convert to CDs until around 89 because vinyl had disappeared. I hated the small size of the packaging.
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 That's the year ( 1989 )I bought my first Cd's ! My vinyl collection is large because I always maintained a collection and I still bought records in decades since the early 70s.
I know your big into country and I don’t have a lot, 50 or so albums but Lovett and Yoakum got me into it. I still buy some country and keep dipping a toe in the water but space limitations always are an issue. Thanks for taking time to watch
Hey Steve thanks for taking the time to review some of your favorites from 1987...I have the Mellencamp but haven't listened yet...and never heard of lime spiders but that'll change if lucky to find!! and to think that my copy of los lobos still sits unlistened too...shame on me!!...oh, and yeah, the accordion...luv it..evokes such feeling!!
Louis, gosh darn it play that Los Lobos album! It is kind of a celebration, so much good stuff and some great songwriting. That Lime Spider album has always been real cheap to find, at least it had been, who knows anymore. It is a great example of the 80s psych revival that was going on. It took me years to get into Mellencamp. This was the first album I bought from him and again I loved the joy that came off on a lot of the songs. It still makes me smile. I’m glad you enjoyed the video
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I'll be spinning my los lobos ASAP Steve and radars set for lime spiders. Thanks again for all the valuable leads...and keep the videos coming!!
Hello Steve; Some good showings from 1987. Your favorite records from that year. An era of music in your life. Records you enjoy spinning again. Making the price of the records worthwhile. Had you been able to foresee the future you could have asked the storeowners to 🔔subscribe ✔ Take care, 🙎♀Tina & 🙎♂Pat!~
If only I had known the future Tina and Pat, oh the things I could have set up! The 80s really is where I fall musically and still tend to go to when it comes to listening to music. It is about memories after all
Hey Steve, my top album from that year would be that Love & Rockets record. Saw them 3 times on that tour. Also saw U2 that year. Great year for music, great video!
Lol Mike, why am I not surprised that this was your favorite album that year. It did get spun a lot by me. It was my first album by Love and Rockers and is still my favorite.
I just recently found that Cult album. When it first came out I got such bad reviews in Rolling Stone that I ignored it. Lesson I learned, don’t listen to Rolling Stone. First game Thursday, pretty excited.
1987 was Spring semester freshman year and fall semester sophomore year for me. I have most of these albums and I at least am familiar with all of them. However, a lot of these I bought in the 90s second hand. Saw R.E.M. in both 1986 and 1987 at the Philadelphia Spectrum. Feelies opened the first time, 10,000 Maniacs the second time.
Kelly those were a couple of awesome concerts. REM in the 80s would have been very special to have seen. 90s was such a great time to buy. Since the flood I have had to repurchase all of these and it definitely is a lot more expensive lol
Johnny really liked Los Lobos. We had them on several times. I remember buying "The Screaming Blue Messiahs." It was at the record store from the Spinal Tap movie, which was just down the street from me. Great place to pick up obscure albums (some of them now quite pricey) cheap.
Los Lobos became a favorite band with this album, at least their 80s catalog. It is good to know me and Johnny had similar taste, well at least on one thing
I just looked at my list for 1987 (I haven't made that video yet), and none of these are on my list, though I have some of them! Thanks for the GnR dedication 🙂
How could none of these be on your list Brian, these are The Best of 87. They must be on your list. I look forward to see what great music I missed out on
Hi Steve. I saw a copy of The Joshua Tree in the window of my local good will store yesterday but I didn't pick it up...I've still never heard the record, and that blows my mind a little. I don't think of 1987 as being a good year for music as there was a lot of manufactured pop clogging up the British charts at that time, but you showed a lot of interesting things which I've not heard of. Nice to see Los Lobos in the top spot, I'm a late convert to them and have a few of their records including the one you showed. Great to see you as always, and thanks for the birthday wishes earlier in the month.
Interesting why you said about the 87 charts in the UK being very pop oriented. When I look at my 87 albums there is a lot more US artist then usual and a number of them were going back to the roots. Joshua Tree is worth a listen, powerful album. It took me awhile to find one. Use to see them everywhere but not anymore
Great video Steve I have the Lime Spiders and The Sceaming Blue Messiahs good stuff Also like the Meat Puppets Huevos from ‘87 I distinctly remember seeing GnR Welcome to the Jungle on MTV and being excited cause they really rocked without all the usual hair metal crap so I had to run out and get that one and still have it I saw them twice on that tour they were awesome but then they went down hill from there 😂 Take care Brian ☮️
Brian, your thoughts on Guns n Roses was just like mine. Great hard rock without the baggage of hair metal. How great could they have been in Rose hadn’t become a complete idiot? Brian your tastes are excellent liking both the Spiders and the Messiahs! Those two albums still excite me.
I really enjoy Suzanne Vega's "Solitude Standing" in spite of the fact that i was trying to get over someone named Luca when it came out. That song was everywhere.
OMG, Luca was haunting you wherever you went. What is the chance of that happening Maria. I love that album, still remember buying it and spinning it for the first time. I was not what I was normally listening to, more quiet but meaningful
1987 was a great year for music, for a while I had a theory about years ending in 7 being landmark ones musically, 1957, 1967, 1977 all had big things going on. Since then I think that theory has been debunked though. Should have been a few game changing years in between but it didn't happen lol. Lonesome Jubilee, he sure had a lot of hits but I haven't spent much time with his albums, don't think I ever owned any at the time, going to have to check if I do have that one now. Some lesser known favourites here Steve, never yet heard a Los Lobos LP, cheers
The theory of 7, very interesting Doug, I have not heard this. Makes me want to check out 97 and 07. This could be a whole topic of discussion. I call it the year of the accordion. I finally liked that instrument.
The Bevis Frond's Inner Marshland is excellent, good choice. I had The Joshua Tree, but it got purged about 5 years ago, so maybe time to bring that one back in. I love anything by the Cramps, and that live album is pretty good. Only John Mellancamp LP I own is Scarecrow. I was surprised to see the Lime Spiders, that's a great album. Double Nickles on the Dime is fantastic, I picked that one earlier this year. I also got Guns and Roses this year, I resisted getting that one for a long time because of Axle Rose's prima donna bullshit, but then decided that I shouldn't let that get in the way of enjoying good music. Great list there Steve, even your honorable mentions were great. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Michael. I figured I would be one of the few people to have Lime Spiders and Bevis Frind in a top 10 lol. Both albums were great and still bring me a lot of enjoyment. I do plan to get Scarecrow some day and maybe Uh Huh. Maybe a greatest hits would be better?
i really love los lobos and by the light and kiko were my intros to their mix of tex mex rock - great choices steve and your descriptions of the records are thorough and interesting - thanks steve - i am doing top 10 for 1989 but need 3 videos to cover the 10 = look out for them as i upload in the next week or 2
John, so good to hear from you. No one does a list better than you. I will check out 89, slowly making my way there but the albums become less and less as I approach the 90s.
87 was a great year. the 11th dream day! i thought i was the only one who knew of them. a while back i recommended THE ZULUS, produced by bob mould. i believe the lp is " on the floor " did u check it out came out in ,89.
I did listen to The Zulus, another cool Boston band. I would have bought their first album but the sellers are asking way too much for that album so I will have to keep an eye out for it Last year I bought a few 11th Dream albums but I have never seen anyone else show that group. Great year for music Bruce
Many great selections there Steve. Althoughi think By The Light Of The Moon is a great album, it's ot perfect for me. Shakin shakin shakes doesn't fit on to it imo. It just doesn't have that fantastic roll they usually have to their songs. 1987 was important year for me in music as it was the year i begin to leave metal behind me and venture in to new kind of music to me. I didn't yet hear any of these albums during that year, a couple of them the next year some of them much later. It was the beginning of a great adventure called music. Pasi
Pasi, great story, so many of us have that moment in time where suddenly we discover something more. Some folks stay with Kiss there whole life, that’s fine but it is more exciting to branch out into new areas. 87 was another pivotal year for me also. I do u fers Tandy your view on Shakin Shake Shake. That was their hit in the US. Cool sax on that song
Some really great albums there and some I never heard of (Close Lobsters?, Silos?). But I will add some more to my must-hear list because I enjoy your recommendations. Nice choices with your honorable mentions...Icicle Works is great! Joshua Tree....the last excellent U2 album. Like I said before, I love The Minutemen but seem to never get anything by them (not for lack of trying). Yes! on The Screaming Blue Messiahs. Great stuff!
Mike, always love a Screaming Blues Messiah fan! I just found another Minutemen record this week, I was kind of shocked. Icicle Works were new to me, that was my first album by them that I found this year. I did love the 80s except for the hairstyles lol
Lyle Lovett definitely changed things up. As we already discussed, that Bruce Hornsby is excellent. That is the only U2 album I have, and all I need. That is the only John Mellencamp album I have, and all I need. That is the only Guns N Roses album I have, and all I need.
I did pretty good trying to build my coll3ction around your collection though I do have more U2 albums. I never really got into Mellencamp but seem to enjoy his other music more now. Old age thing I guess lol
Lyle's album is fantastic. I love the tinges of gossip that flow through that one. The fade-up that starts The Joshua Tree really sets the mood for the entire album; it's flawless and should probably be a little higher in the ranking. Appetite is one of a handful of rock albums that I play regularly! I think we can agree on #1. I know you are having a great time with your son and grandson by the incredible photos.
It has been a great trip Mark and Aiden has been a lot of fun for me. Always great to know other people regard Los Lobos so highly. That truly was an musical experience for me, it made a huge difference in what I was listening to. I was surprised I had that many albums already from that year. I was definitely buying a lot more music then
Yes it was Michael, 84, every time I seem to screw up the date on one album. I try to be consistent. Awesome your a Bevis Frond fan, not many of those in the VC
Bug, I was surprised how good it was. When I was looking to see what I had I couldn’t believe how much music I had brought back from that year. It was all so good It was also when I first began to listen to country thanks to Lovett and Yoakum. Times were a changing for me musically
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Same with me on the country music trail, which amused my mates, also got the Nanci Griffith album Lone Star State Of Mind that year, another good album. From those three albums I then ventured back into the history of country. Keep up the good work on the videos, always varied and interesting. Thanks.
hey steve..love these 'year' lists..great choices..(just an fyi..both the lyle lovett and dwight yoakam were their second albums, not their debuts..but i know you knew that..)... please stay well my friend..peace to you and yours..rocky
I confess, when I was younger I bought a lot of records with nice covers like Grateful Dead and even Lime Spiders. I should never have choosen Iron Maiden (dont like horror movies either) Now I now Iron Maiden 1 was very good thanks to you, shall try Los Lobos.....
Funny how some covers can make us not try some music. It only took me 64 years to give IM a try. Love that you also found that album to be good. People said their second album Killers is similar.
Look out! Hoodoo Gurus right behind you Mike! Do you listen to 'em before you put 'em away? By the way Mike you're just making more work by having more 1987 records behind you & showing ones that didn't make the cut, but having said that, nice copy of the mighty Stems. The Horn again! Mike were you intentionally being obscure with 10 thru 9 to soften me up before laying that big stinker of U2 on us 😂 That was brutal mate...ok now we're back on track with The Cramps Mike, phew! He brings in the accordion & the Australian walks out 😂 You are messing with my emotions Mike. Talk about good cop/bad cop now I'm lovin' you again, Lime Spiders!! I saw Vinyl Richie a while back totally not dig Minutemen. I thought he'd totally love Double Nickels. I don't know your Screaming Blue Messiahs. I can get the love for Gunners music, but am I the only one that just hears the sound of a strangled cat on vocals? Poor Brian 😢Then more accordion!! That was a rollercoaster of emotions Mike. Cheers...Ben
I listened to all of the albums from 87. It took me over a month. I do like ate Stems, great garage rock as you well know. I knew you would appreciate a little U2, hope nothing got thrown at the screen. I think it will start getting tougher to do this as more music was CD now but I will look into 88. It’s a nice way to relisten to a lot of music and understand why you loved it so much. Bono say hi Mike
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I am bringing "It came out of the shadows of polka" to my next band practice for possible album names. That's gold Mike 😂
Thanks to the great video couple bands you should check out Halsey Badlands album It's a masterpiece and the videos are good too and one other f/i They're from Milwaukee psych Space Rock in another band there is called vocal keshYou may like them have a great day
Gilbert, are you trying to keep me from retiring by tempting me with more music. Shame on you lol. Thank you, I appreciate this. I will thick them out, they sound intriguing. Okay, f/I sounded intriguing but not the Throbbing Gristle part, the Spacemen 3 connections. I had heard of the Badlands album, sounded good. I could not find vocal keshYou. The Bevis Frond album is amazing! Thanks again for that album! Yes, he has a strong Hendrix vibe. Great Psych! Lots of cool albums for 1987!

I will check out 89, slowly making my way there but the albums become less and less as I approach the 90s.
watch my ranking videos and then chase up the albums recommended - you might like them@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Woooohoooo! I found a perfect copy of The Waterboys Fisherman Blues today. So happy!
Wow, amazing you found that. That is a top 5 favorite album of all time for me. It brings me incredible joy every time I play it
Guns N’ Roses liked their music but alas never bought their record.
For me that is the only record needed by them. They had some other hits but this was packed with power Tony
I was definitely buying a lot more music then
Double Nickels was a little earlier than 87. Bevis Frond would be my favorite followed closely by the Lime Spiders.
Yes it was Michael, 84, every time I seem to screw up the date on one album. I try to be consistent. Awesome your a Bevis Frond fan, not many of those in the VC
With you on Lyle Lovett, The Cult, Dwight Yoakam, Screaming Blue Messiahs and got me original UK copy of Guns n' Roses. Not a bad year.
Thanks.
Great Icicle Works & Minutemen were highlights for me. In general , 87 was a down year .. Things got better in 88.
I was surprised how many albums I had from 87 David. I was looking at 88 and I definitely have less to choose from.
hey steve..love these 'year' lists..great choices..(just an fyi..both the lyle lovett and dwight yoakam were their second albums, not their debuts..but i know you knew that..)... please stay well my friend..peace to you and yours..rocky
Of course I thought they were the debut. Okay Lovett, was not I now remember the debut. Sigh. As usual I mess these up but I’m consistent lol
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 you're perfect the way you are...always be you my friend...
Strangeways, Darklands. I know, I know, it's Steve's list.
I use to have Darklands, I hope to find it again so day. Had picked it up in a bargain bin in the 90s. Don’t see that happening again
87 was the year of the accordion. It finally came out from the shadows of polka!
Some thing to look into Gilbert
