Interesting how this mod lets you play from the German perspective. Even though you are playing as a German soldier, it definitely shows the brutality of the Battle of Stalingrad, no matter which side you play. This is for anyone who likes history, like me: In reality, did the Wehrmacht have any chance of taking Stalingrad? We all know that both sides poured manpower and resources into the battle, but if Germany actually captured the city, would it have mattered? The USSR is a massive nation, all the Soviets had to do was move their supply lines further away from the Volga River.
"did the Wehrmacht have any chance of taking Stalingrad?" well they took 90% of it IRL, so I'd say they did. Of course decisions made a few weeks or months before they arrived in late August would have changed things the most. For example during the drive on Stalingrad there was one particular panzer army (I think it might have been the 4th) that List or some other General said should have been sent to Stalingrad instead of up and down the Don where it was just clogging up the road when it could have captured Stalingrad before it was reinforced by the commies. Then of course there's the big strategy decision to split AGS. Had they not split AGS and instead stuck with the plan to take Astrakahn then they would have certainly captured Stalingrad and defeat Operation Uranus, the commie counterattack. Instead IRL they split AGS and achieved nothing. Didn't capture the oil wells in the Caucuses or capture Stalingrad. The two biggest reasons why the European Allies lost as much as they did is because A) they declared war on USA in 1941 and B) Split AGS in July 1942. Followed by Japan not invading the USSR and letting the Axis get defeated in detail. It's infinitely fascinating to think of these different outcomes. Had 4th Panzer Army captured Stalingrad in September/October then the Germans+Allies would have avoided hundreds of thousands of casualties. The strategic outlook of IOTL February 1943 to an alternate 1943 of the Germans not losing 6th Army, defeating Uranus and still controlling the Kuban (5% of Soviet food source) and denying the use of the Volga to the Soviets (80% of Soviet oil came from Baku, 20% of western aid came via Iran) is huge. I do wonder what then would happen. Remember, the Germans IOTL still launched a final major offensive during Kursk (July 1943). Where would this alternate 1943 offensive be ? Leningrad, Moscow ?
@@AFGuidesHD Good point. One critical decision doomed the operation to capture the city. Of course, the Soviets also switched their tactics. In order to fight urban warfare, the Wehrmacht needed to keep the Red Army at a distance, so their troops could be supported by artillery or airstrikes. The Soviets developed "hugging" strategies: Keeping their frontlines as close to the German lines as possible, because they knew the Germans would not risk an artillery strike on their own forces. A factor in preventing the Germans from winning?

@@kukasadam1634 I'm from germany and I know the answer. It's called fear. The people the german civilians had to fear were called "GeStaPo" wich is short for "Geheime Staats Polizei" wich means "Secret State Police". It was the political Police in Nazi Germany. In 1933, after Hitlers election (yes, he really was elected) the GeStaPo were the Men in Black who came in the night to the houses of democrats, communists and every other political person who wasn't in the NSDAP. Most of the "visited" politicians were never seen again, the rest was found dead... same fate for family members and sometimes even close friends.
