    As an American, I’m glad this happened. Berhalter shouldn’t have ever been hired in the first place, never mind rehired. And some people needed a reality check that we aren’t a contender, we need a better coach that can give us a shot against bigger teams. The ‘22 loss to the Netherlands showed how Gregg was out of his depth and we needed a better coach to take that next step, instead we’ve gone backwards.

      Good take. I agree. He is the b version of what Southgate is for England; the textbook example of what a bad manager (not coach) can do to a talented team. Managing elite talent/personalities is like driving a $500k car, just because you know how to drive, doesn't mean you know how to drive all cars. Makes you appreciate an Ancelotti, Guardiola or Mourinho. Sports travesty when generational talented teams (I know the US and England are on different levels), like what Belgium was, are ruined by incompetance at the high levels of the organization. Moreno knows CONMEBOL. For their previous two games we saw the new Uruguay, however they haven't forgotten to play as they did in the past. For this game the Uruguay we are more accustomed to showed up. The one that grinds, the one that plays with physical tenaciity, the one that tackles relentlessly, the one that absorbs all you throw at them, counterattacks gets their goal and it's game over. They are versatile in that they can play pretty and with speed but can also play the most physical football in South America. They know how to play and win ugly.

    • @ThomasGallagher-v5l

      The one that fouls but South American refs don't give cards to their teams.... totally cynical soccer. Similar to the Brazil final v Argentina. Argentina couldn't keep up with Brazil so the ref let Argentina foul their way to the win.

    • @richardthompson3346
      @richardthompson3346 5 місяців тому +4

      @@ThomasGallagher-v5l The referee was in over his head to many mistakes. The USA yellow card shouldn't have been given. The second USA card should have resulted in an immediate stop of play. There was also missed calls. R. Araujo got an elbow to the face with no call and nandez got a backhand to the face that wasn't called because the referee and linesmen were out of position. I think an additional referee is needed. One for each half. This will also keep them honest.

    The US plays way too many games at usa, not abroad. They should man up and always go to Copa America in South America to hostile crowds and unfamiliar places. It'll toughnen them up instead of useless Gold Cup that they always host. It is a talented squad, but w/soft players & weak coach

      I hear you dude, but that would be bad for the brand, you see. We get that experience going to Azteca, Tegucigalpa, San Salvador, San Jose, Belize and Panama during WCQ and we struggle against that.That's why we decided, in the last WCQ, to play I think El Salvador in Minneapolis, Minnesota in winter because we were underwhelming and not getting points when playing in Central America. Doing what you suggest in South America, in altitude in Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and then against the titans of CONMEBOL would be so humbling and humiliating, US Soccer would realize they can't sell, promote and squeeze money out of a team that's ultimately a medium-sized fish used to swallowing guppies in a small pond suddenly finding itself being devoured by the sharks of a bigger footballing ocean in South America.

      Totalmente, el fútbol es muy psicológico. Los partidos se definen a una sola jugada, y ahí es donde reside su atractivo. Los Simpson se burlaban de ello diciendo que el fútbol es sólo pasar y pasar, pero el problema es cuando te mantiene pegado al asiento, sobre todo en los minutos finales porque sabes que en cualquier momento el juego puede cambiar. Entonces, si el fútbol es el deporte más psicológico que existe, ¿por qué el entrenador les dijo a sus jugadores que el otro partido estaba empatado? ¿Por qué distraerlos, por qué hacerlos complacientes? Entiendo la emoción de la afición en el estadio, pero ¿el entrenador? No quiero faltarle el respeto a nadie, pero está claro que este entrenador es de Estados Unidos y no ha crecido en un país futbolístico. Eso es un pecado para cualquier entrenador. Deberían traer un entrenador europeo o sudamericano, preferiblemente este último, y si es posible, insistir en que la federación se traslade a la CONMEBOL, como lo hizo Australia al mudarse a Asia.
      En CONCACAF nunca mejorarás. México está peor que Estados Unidos, Panamá lo logró por milagro y Canadá acaba de descubrir el fútbol hace cinco años. En Sudamérica, excepto Bolivia, que es con diferencia el más débil, todos los demás equipos son muy difíciles. Sus estadios son hostiles, hay presión, juegan duro. Allí el fútbol se vive de otra manera. No sólo Brasil y Argentina, cualquier país puede competir. Puede que no tengan grandes nombres, pero todos los equipos compiten. Por ejemplo, Perú, que actualmente ocupa el último lugar de la clasificación, estuvo en el top 10 del ranking mundial en 2017 y ganó el premio a la mejor afición del mundo. Eso lo dice todo.
      Entonces, ¿a qué esperas para jugar allí y dejar de jugar con Jamaica, Panamá, México (que está peor que nosotros, aunque creemos que son una potencia futbolística) y Canadá, que ni siquiera tiene liga propia? ? Vamos a jugar allí. Estoy seguro de que nos recibirán con los brazos abiertos gracias a nuestro dinero. Puede que no lleguemos a un Mundial, pero a la larga, la base de aficionados crecerá. Y con el dinero que tenemos, nos convertiremos en una potencia en poco tiempo porque Estados Unidos es una potencia en todos los deportes excepto en el fútbol, donde no tenemos un solo jugador entre los mil mejores de todos los tiempos porque no tenemos competencia. Sin competencia, nunca se mejora.
      Acabamos de regresar a una Copa América después de 8 años. Eso es bueno y creo que lo jugaremos siempre de ahora en adelante. Pero sólo hemos jugado 5 Copas Américas de las 40 que han existido en 100 años. Jugamos un Mundial cada cuatro años y luego pasamos cuatro años jugando amistosos y partidos de bajo nivel contra México, inventando mil torneos que a ningún verdadero aficionado al fútbol le importan. Juguemos Copa América, Eliminatorias Sudamericanas y tengamos un entrenador que conozca el fútbol sudamericano.

    The mistake the US made was to come out and try to make the game physical. I think Alexi Lalas, prior to the game, commented that the US should go in hard, take early (clean) fouls and let Uruguay know that they wouldn't be intimidated by Uruguays high press, speed and transition game. Uruguay saw this and said "Oh you want to play a physical game...let us show you how it's done."
    They've been playing like that for their entire history. The US played to one of Uruguays greatest strengths and paid for it. You can take a second division team from Uruguay and yes you will beat them however you will be feeling it for a few days.

    We are not developing young players, in spite of having 3 million kids playing the sport. Our system requires kids to pay lots of money to play in the top clubs, only to be trained inadequately: twice a week with useless never-ending tournaments, never focusing on individual skills and talent.
    Copy what works: Uruguay, Argentina; all clubs have kids of all ages train daily and move up through the ranks, focusing on perfecting skills, technique and mental toughness. And if kids with talent dont have the $$ the Clubs sponsor them

    As a British person I never believed the moniker that this current generation is the strongest US generation. They are the most technical because they are the first generation to emerge from the MLS and world academies system. I don’t see a McBride, Dempsey, Claudio Reyna, Beadsley,, Howard, Friedel or Donovan who were stars in their top 5 league clubs.
    A lot of people say they have more Americans in big European teams, but I think this is because European clubs see the commercial value in American players now, which wasn’t the case before. It didn’t go unnoticed in the Europe that when Pulisic joined Chelsea, the Premier League TV contract increased by four times it’s value in the USA, so big clubs are buying Americans to increase the value of their TV rights in the USA. There is also a lot more American owned teams in Europe now, and American owned teams tend to buy Americans for commercial reasons too. So,I think more Americans in top 5 leagues is more to do with commercial value than quality.
    I also think US trying to play this technical passing game, just makes the USA easier for big teams to beat. USA players are not at technically gifted as the players from the top nations who don’t have pay to play and have a street soccer culture that produces more technical players. Let’s be real Pulisic the so called greatest American player ever, would not start in the French, Spanish, Brazilian, Argentina, German, Portugal or even the England team. Why is the USA trying to play passing technical game other countries will always be superior than them at? That is why this generation not had any major wins against big teams like past generations. The traditional strengths of the US players were defensive organisation, grittiness, work rate and raw athleticism. But does the USA have those players with all MLS academies teaching American kids tiki-taka football? The USA should be playing to these strengths. Klinsmann gets a not of criticism in the US soccer media because he called out American soccer problems and there were people in American soccer waiting for him to fail when he was US coach because he wanted to shake up the status quo and a lot of people in US soccer have vested interests to keep things the same. But I still think his USMNT was the strongest USA team I have ever seen, who would regularly beat big names home and away because they what they were good at and what they weren’t good at and played to these strengths.

That's really difficult to play against and they got results against bigger teams and were up for the fight in CONCACAF away games which the current team often isn't. Soft underbelly, though the one thing they do have going for them is they are better than the rest of CONCACAF with this weak Mexico side and they win the CONCACAF trophies consistently.

    One thing I don’t understand is, if the US thinks they can no longer win on the women’s side without coaching expertise from England and Spain, why aren’t they doing the same on the men’s side?
    The men’s team is in a much tougher starting position to begin with. Didn’t start out as giants of the sport and trailblazers but rather started from behind. And also face like 3x the amount of competition, because there are many countries that are elite on the men’s side that don’t pose much of a threat on the women’s side yet. Like almost all of South America for example.

      It’s not that bad. US Soccer pays Emma so much that it matches what most of your opponents pay their men’s coach. They might very well pay them less than what Emma is earning.
      It’s only a few men’s teams that pay their coach real astronomical sums. Like England, Germany, France, Argentina probably. Panama hardly does or Uruguay either.
      Or you can look at the Euros England almost lost to Slovakia and Portugal to Slovenia. They both pay their coach 10x more than what Slovakia and Slovenia can afford most likely. So coach salary isnt the be all end all. Lots of good coaches you can get with your budget.
      But I agree that the USMNT has nothing to gain whatsoever from comparing itself to the USWNT in every aspect. It has to compare itself to other men’s teams. Just saying you don’t need to be in the top 5 % of highest paid coaches to be competitive.

    • @LL31199
      @LL31199 5 місяців тому +1

      So it’s not the ”equivalent of a women’s team coach”. Emma earns maybe 10x that of most well paid coaches in the women’s game, if not more. Only England comes somewhat close and it’s still 3-4 times more than Wiegman. So she’s not exactly the norm she’s the exception, because the US is a very rich federation. If the US had beaten Bolivia (losers of 17 of their past 21) and Panama, and lost to Uruguay and either Brazil or Colombia in the next round, it would have been the most likely possible outcome for the tournament. They couldn't get past Panama, who is in CONCACAF. The conversation should be on both the coach and players. Mexico being as down as they have been this century, and possibly longer in Herculez's eyes, does not make the US picture better. One figures in a 48 team WC where they are gifted a top seed in their group, it should be workable, but those teams are going to have more talent than Panama.
