I honestly love this game, probably one of the first PS1 games i ever played. I've never been able to rescue all 99 mudokons, but managed to save all 300 in exoddus
This game was by far my favorite to play as a kid. The sound design in this is a absolute masterpiece. But so was the game play at the time too. I still can hear the Slig's footsteps, gun fire and laugh in my head to this day.
I remember seeing this game's box art as a kid and being terrified of it so I never bothered looking into it lol But eventually I did come around to remembering the game's name when Oddworld Stranger's Wrath came out because I thought the Stranger had a cool designl lol Never got around to playing the game but saw some reviews of it in the early 2010s and I could see that the game was actually an underrated classic of the Playstation 1's library. I may give it a try one day but for now, awesome review and nice poem at the end!
this game wasn't my first game on the console (that would be TR 1) but i played the demo on the included Demo Disc all the time. I was so glad when i finally got the game as.... "security copy" since of course i had the original *cough* and boy i loved it :D Especially the "sound test"in the main menue were you could "test" how you made Abe talk was hilarious. Also the german voice acting was great. ALso Abe did get his own techno track for the second game xD
Hi! Came across your videos recently and hit some heavy nostalgia feels with the Tomb Raider series!! Replaying them while my sons and daughters are watching is amazing! These games are next! Thank you for your Time and Energy!
33:14 you can buffer inputs in this game, in other words you can just hold run and jump before even landing from that ledge and consistently make that jump every time, my guess is that that's what you did accidentally on your last try therefore making it across
You can save your progress for secret areas or in general by going back to a previous checkpoint, it will reactivate and your progress be properly saved, although you would respawn a few screens back, but you can always get back to your last checkpoint to reactivate it as well. Basically, if you really need to save, backtrack then come back.
Thanks GFrom, I finally saw the entirety of this game from start to finish and it was a banger :D The poem at the end was really sweet - from time to time I like to go through PS1 library with my brother in the room to check out if the pink glasses of nostalgia still hold true or not and it's great to live through the feelings of good old times
I was a fan of this game, this is the best game I have ever played since 2000. full of skills, intelligence, and challenge. watching in 2024 I played this game in 1999 if I remember the date correctly when I was 8 then in 2002. was my favorite of mine till now, I can't believe that in 2024 I still remember Abe, my friend. game structured my mindset and childhood, and I still remember these days. now my son is 7 and he should start playing it. I was tucked in the last level I want to return back
31:40 - There is a trick you can use here. If you start to chant at the exact moment when the monster is about to jump over a pit after you, it will start yelling instead of jumping and will fall down. Your timing has to be perfect, but it's totally worth it.
Thank you for the Review GFrom loved the poem at the end. While I enjoy Oddysee, Exoddus is my favourite game of all time. But its great to see some love for the game, the atmosphere, the music are great and in my opinion those cutscenes are timeless and its amazing to see them hold up all these years later. You're definitely right about the jumping being off in this entry, it feels like holding the jump button down is the best way to get some consistency out of it (I always dread doing the first Scrab secret in Stockyards), luckily that issue is resolved in Exoddus and jumping is pretty snappy.
My mum used to buy me PSX games and surprise me when I got home from school. I'll never forget playing Abes Oddysee with her. We had so much fun, this game was hillarious! I was never able to finish it as a kid. edit: also I'm half way through, not sure if you know this but you can fart on the mudokens until they die LOL.
I remember having this game as well. Could never finish it as a kid. So difficult and scary. With the meat grinder and chasing. Puh! Btw. German? Your beard looks so nice as well 😊
14:15 Holy Hannah I know exactly what you mean!! I had such a hard time with that my first play through. And even the first playthrough when New and Tasty was released!!
Man I only discovered you last month but I love your vids! All about the era! Think you’re only a few years older than me so the childhood parallels are high😜 but nahh your tone n humour are great😁😁 I have a total love affair with Germany as well eh so despite you taking me back to my childhood you also take me back to my travelling days! Chill calming voice, great for bedtime! Keep on keeping man😃😃😃
For the future playthrough, if you are in secret rooms running from Scrab left to right, all while guiiding Mudokons, you can chant while Scrab is mid jump. It will stop him mid-air and it will fall to the abyss. Speedrun strat that makes it easier and not rage inducing. ;)
@@GFrom Glad to be of a assistance. I love your vids, mostly Tomb Raider ones, and Abe's Oddysee is my childhood and one of the most treasured games in my heart :)
Thanks for this Gfrom as a youth i didnt have the patience or brain cells to progress much in this game so its great to see a playthrough. Looking forward to the next one! Loved the poem. Will we get to vote on upcoming games again ? 😂
Amazing review of this game! I didn't get a chance to play it when it was new since my family couldn't afford game systems until the 00s (I had a genesis that was given to us by a friend that didn't want it anymore and a PC that we had only because my dads work gave it to him). When I did get to play this some years ago I really enjoyed it and the world really sucked me in. I can absolutely see why this is a fave with a lot of people that grew up with PS1. That said, I only ever really found 1 thing truly wrong with the game and that's the bad endings. I think someone really took the idea of a bad ending and really went with it cus the bad ending in the first one is pretty bad, having his own kind just abandon him, even if he saved 49 of them. It's even WORSE in the second one where they flat out stop your mission from succeeding in its tracks and give you to the villain of the game. Like what? That to me really killed my drive to want to play more of the games like the one on the Xbox, at least not right away. I know its not a cannon ending but it really paints this picture of his own kind only caring about the literal savior of their race if he satisfied them enough. Was that the intention? I don't know. I just didn't like it, but I did love the second game too despite them having to rush to make it (and yes it shows). Your jumping issue may be because of PAL things or the fact you were playing on a PS3. The combination of the 2 may have made a really bad delay or the stuff happening on screen + PAL + PS3 may have tanked the input lag hard for the certain parts. Whatever the case, awesome you 100%ed it! Looking forward to your next video :)
Ah, Abe's Oddysee, one of the greatest games ever crafted in terms of gameplay, visuals and story telling, but I can't excuse that bs checkpoint system, it is unnecessarily punishing which is why they fixed it in the sequel Abe's Exoddus with the Quicksave system, still one of my favorite games of all time, but Exoddus is just a better Oddysee with more content and better mechanics so unless you care about the lore, which can be circumvented by watching the gorgeous cutscenes online, then you should just play Exoddus

I only recently got New N' Tasty for my Switch and while I really enjoyed it, I missed the grungy, grimey asthetics of the original game. And Soulstorm? My favourite songs from the series is when you possess the Sligs and you get some real punchy machinery to jam to while you slaughter your enemies
I prefer the sequel Abe' Exoddus but hopefully you'll cover that one too
Great video btw, I watched the whole thing. You're very underrated
Thank you! Yeah I'd like to cover Exoddus later this year.
9:33 You can talk to more than 1 at a time. The "All of You" funktion.
Not in Oddysee.
Sick review dude ! Really enjoyed it 💪🏼 Loved this game as a kid - still do ! Agree on your points aswell 👍👍👍
Thanks, man! 🙌

Ah okay, that would explain it. Thanks for letting me know!

Oh, I wasn't aware that this saves progress. Still a flawed system, but better than nothing. Thanks for letting me know!

When you release videos it fills me with joy
Wish there were more cinemiatic platformers. POP 1 and 2 got so much memories
I'd never heard of this game until your vid GFrom but I've downloaded the remaster on my ps5 to give it a go myself.
Cool, have fun! 😊

I remember i asked you for this game some time ago so.. Thank you gfrom❤
You're welcome!
The music puzzles was a genius thing 🙌 As a kid i loved The Oddworld Universe

Thank you! As I'm responding I'm writing the script for Abe's Exoddus. You can look forward to that video at the end of the year 👍
@@GFrom Can't wait honestly, Exoddus is even better than Oddysee :)
This came on our demo with the PlayStation. I ended up getting it. Never completed it but it’s such a great game
I loved watching my brother playing this when I was a kid. 😊
11:35 God I still have PTSD from that part

I have some stuff planned but after that I'm up for another vote 😁

Shit yeah man! I love these games!!
I think the laugh changes when you’ve saved 50 mudokons. It’s good ending from there.
Makes sense!
Did you ever play the lost vikings? Those were great games!!! And controlling 3 characters it took some brain power
No I haven't yet 🤷♂️
@@GFrom I used to play with my brother but u can play as a 1 player - it’s a great puzzle rpg kinda game - takes logic :)

This game mesmerized me as a kid but it was way too hard. For what it's worth, I did manage to beat the Game Boy version.
I played the demo of the first level over and over back in the day, but never purchased the full game. Ahhh this game was so cute… but… far too hard. I never lasted very long on it. Yet I also got abes exoddus
