She also opens up about her personal journey to understand her Middle Eastern heritage in her new book “But You Don’t Look Arab: And Other Tales of Unbelonging.”

I can relate to you in many ways!… both of my parents were born in Syria, but my siblings and I were born in a Caribbean island called Trinidad 🇹🇹
I’m so grateful to my parents for speaking Arabic in our home, because we all learned the language!
Like you, when I tell people that I am Syrian, they are very surprised,….
I am so proud of my culture, .. the food, and the generosity of my ancestors 🙏🏻🥰

My Great Grandfather was born 1863 Mt Lebanon, Syria. He was rescued as a child by the church and taken to Scotland and eventually became a doctor. I’m so desperate to know about his life journey.

@@Ded_Silu Thank you for your response. It is good to know but also sad at the same time... Because so many people from Afghanistan had to leave their country. I am happy that I became a multilingual polyglot and I love living all over the world. But sometimes I wonder how it would have been if other countries didn't attack Afghanistan for its resources. If it had been given time to develop without interference from outside, what would that country be now... 😢

What a refreshing and informative interview with a truly cosmopolitan journalist. Like many others who were born in one country and then lived in many others, she could never forget her roots. How well she has handled that situation is there for all to see.

I just want to say, as a Norwegian, I don’t think the Italians, the Spanish, the Portuguese or the Greeks are any different from the Syrian or the Lebanese! I was so surprised to see so many fair skinned people with blue eyes, green eyes or hazel eyes in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine and I’ve seen so many dark skinned Italians from Milan, Padova, Modena, Parma, Bologna, Pisa, Lucca.. same goes for Madrid, Seville, Extremadura, Lisbon, Porto, Algarve… Traveling changed the way I see the world! I loved my study abroad year in Beirut at the American University of Beirut. What a gorgeous country is Lebanon, their culture and their exceptional gastronomy! Divine!

Married a Palestinian in the USA and moved back to Jordan - split from husband and moved to the UAE to raise my daughter…back in the US but on my way out again to Europe and so I relate so much and the question I despised most of my life was always…Where are you from?😂

Many Middle Eastern people including Syrian actually were white at ancient time. When King Reza the great, rescued 30 thousands Polish from Russian concentration camps, and brought them to Persia/Iran and were allowed to have their own schools, churches and live their lives the way they did in Poland and eventually many of them immigrated to Lebanon. A little history explanation about blue eyed and light skin of some Arab countries. We are all mixed race wise.

May I just be a cynical skeptic about the story Hala Gorani tells about changing her Syrian surname Basha (باسا)? So Hala is both an Arab and a Hebrew name and she justified that Gorani would be a surname that might sound Italian/European. Well, that is just nonsense. Let me tell you as an Italian, that Gorani isn't a surname that sounds remotely Italian, despite ending with “i”. It sounds, you know what? Israeli. What a coincidence that now that being Israeli isn't that fashionable anymore she added Basha to her surname in her Wikipedia page 😂

Hala wants to rewrite Lebanons history it seems making Lebanon an artificial country created by the french while lebanon was self ruling since the begining of the 16 century while Syria has always been a set of wilayats, provinces, ruled by turkish pashas. But after all Hala isint your attitude a typical Syrian one meaning always denying Lebanon rich history and blaming colonialism for Syria s problems.
