    Astronaut Mike Mullane gives a great account of this flight, his first, in his book “Riding Rockets”. Although mostly serious, the book does have many humorous moments - for instance when he describes Commander Henry Hartsfield claiming his small revenge on Cuban leader Fidel Castro when the Discovery’s orbit took the Shuttle over Havana and describing how the flight did not attract as much publicity as previous ones, saying there was no Walter Cronkite to tell a waiting, breathless world “They have done it! The Discovery crew has deployed another communications satellite!” He said the mission, while extremely successful, was completely devoid of glory.

    • @IronMan-tk8uc
      @IronMan-tk8uc Рік тому +1

      That's quite normal. Only the first 4 STS missions were significant in terms of media coverage because they were experimental. After that, the program became fully operational and the flights became routine (that is until January of '86 of course).

    The heavy application of Technology is really amazing and this technology is the rationale why we have satellite TV and other opportunities.

    The reason it took two months to get from t minus 4 seconds to liftoff was because the original launch ended with main engine shut down and a fire that would have incinerated the astronauts if they exited the shuttle the wromg way. So Judy l, like Ellison, escaped death the first time but not the second..

I think the space shuttle also proved the it's good not to put all your eggs in one basket. Not to build a spaceship for several multi purposes. Anyways NASA should have had two or three more missions to Skylab to make sure that the thing could have been maintained when the first shuttle flew .
