This was the 100th Shuttle flight, the 130th US crewed spaceflight, The 219th crewed spaceflight, the 28th flight of Discovery, the 44th US and 77th flight with EVA operations, the 5th Shuttle ISS Mission and the 2nd Discovery ISS Mission.
Pamela Melroy was the 3rd female shuttle pilot.
Discovery remained docked to the ISS for 165 hours. After the docking the crew used the robotic arm to lift the Zenith Truss from the payload bay and onto the uppermost docking point of Unity.
4 spacewalk were conducted, by Leroy Chiao, William MacArthur, Michael Lopez Algeria and Peter Wisoff. During the spacewalks, the astronauts connected electrical umbilicals for power to heaters and electoral conduits in the Z1 truss, repositioned 2 communication antennas and put in a tool box for use during future on-orbit building tasks, the PMA 3 was installed on Unity and the Z1 truss prepared for the future attachment of solar arrays, two DC to DC converters which converted electricity generated by the solar arrays to the correct voltage, a Manuel berthing mechanism was tested, a tray was was deployed to provide power for the US Laboratory module, a grapple feature from Z1 was removed and tests of the SAFER units were carried out.
The astronauts continued the transfer of supplies and logistics for the first resident crew. 4 control moment gyros used to orientate the Station and microbial samples were taken from surfaces inside the station to check for contamination and the crew also cleaned surfaces and storage containers with fungicidal wipes to inhibit microbial growth.
The crew spend another day in space because of bad weather at Cape Canaveral and when the poor weather there continued, the Discovery was diverted to a California landing.
Commander Brian Duffy made his 4th and last flight, pilot Pam Melroy her first. Mission Specialist Peter Wisoff made his 4th and last flight,
Leroy Chiao his 3rd, as did William MacArthur. Michael Lopez Algeria made his 2nd flight, as did Japanese astronaut Kochi Wakata .
