This is the only mission in the NASA Space Shuttle program to have eight crew members.
Well kind of, it’s the only one to launch with eight, STS-71 landed with eight as well but launched with seven
Little did the crew members know that their shuttle Challenger would never ever make another landing again. One of the fatal
Flight’s crew members, Judy Resnik, asked this flight’s commander, Hank Hartsfield, not to break the Shuttle so she could fly on
Challenger’s next flight. He promised he would not. Tragically, as we all know, Judy Resnik perished with the other
Crew members on Challenger 3 months after Challenger’s last landing.
Amongst the three shuttle missions flown, Hartsfield also commanded STS-41D which included Resnik in the crew. He flew on three shuttles, Columbia, Discovery and Challenger commanding missions on the latter two.

Really sobering when you look around the inside of this orbiter and think just a few months later history would be changed forever. Alot of things you see in the video is the last thing the crew of 51L saw and laid their hands on.
