Bro the nostalgia makes me want to fuckin cry. Used to spend hours playing backyard football, baseball and basketball on windows xp. And then continued to play on PlayStation for years. Great games for the kids who were made aware. I didn’t know anybody else who had the games, so it seems like if you didn’t have the games to begin with, you probably weren’t going to know about it.

Nice video Kofie. Never knew there were ANY console Backyard games, I only ever played the ones on my old bulky PC. Back in the day. Once I got into mario sports, I didn't think about the backyard ones for a long time. They had a good run, but they just couldn't keep up with gaming trends.

Just ran across this video, and I'm an enormous fan of the HE games myself. And, for the most part, what you did talk about isn't wrong. However, there's a ton more to it, and from what I gather you only seem to be familiar with the early parts of the series.
So, it's first important to remember that Humongous, prior to Backyard Sports, was most known for their point-and-click adventure games. They are what put the company on the map, and it's important to remember that. I believe it wasn't until the third game in this series (Backyard Football) that the Sports outdid the adventures in popularity. Then once that happened, they acquired all of the major sports licenses and went back and redid Backyard Baseball and Soccer with pro players, which further boomed the series' popularity. However, there's a part to this that a lot of people don't realize.
When the company was under the ownership of Infogrames, apparently they were *very* stingy about stepping out of any comfort zones they established. Prior to that occurring, it was easy making a new IP and trying something different -- they didn't have big people in suits and ties telling them "No, you can't do that, we'll lose too much money!" Worse yet, they started demanding more in a shorter amount of time. I think that's what led to Baseball 2003 and Soccer 2004 being so similar to their previous installments -- like, the only substantial difference I can think of is that they redid the entire sound design, complete with a new voice cast. They also came out just after Humongous had to lay off almost half of their staff, as you had pointed out (2002 wasn't exactly a good year for them, to say the least; both games were finished in that year). I think they tried to compensate for the lessened staff by cutting production on the adventures temporarily, which they briefly attempted to revive in 2003, but it sadly wasn't successful. I'd argue the games after that made some pretty substantial changes to the formula (Baseball 2005 in particular, which was a full 3D game), but again, it became problematic when Atari (previously Infogrames) kept demanding more games in a shorter span of time, all with the burden of a dwindling staff. That led to a saturated series that just wasn't lucrative enough to keep bringing a profit; think sort of like the Guitar Hero/Rock Band situation some years ago. It was a smash hit franchise that fell victim to market oversaturation and people getting sick of it. And, I agree with what you said, people had just outgrown the series and there was too much charm lost in it for any newcomers to express interest. Any attempts Humongous made to try and salvage their company (MoonBase Commander being the most tragic example, a very unique strategy game that fell victim to crappy marketing courtesy of Infogrames) proved fruitless.
The new company that rose from the ashes of the 2005 bankruptcy (Humongous Inc) was pretty much in-name only. Only about 3-5 of the original staffers remained there, and at that point the series just turned into a major sports league shill. A good pointer to go by is that if the game title has any year later than "2006" in its name (they named games a year ahead of their release date), those are the games made after all of this happened.
Overall, pretty good video I'd say. It's hard to find information on these games so I don't blame you for any troubles you may have had. And hopefully that clears up some of the questions you may have had.

Mr. Eight-Three-One How do you know all this information?

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne 5 років тому +9

      @@Pablosanchez-fq5ig Mostly because I'm a huge nerd.
Well, the longer explanation: Humongous Entertainment was my first experience with computers, and I have a special liking to them because of it. They were what put me on my career path to electrical engineering. I also was one of the first people on the Internet to spark a new interest in these games, and over the years that's led to me gathering a lot of information. On top of that, I also have contact with a few of the former employees via the Humongous Entertainment Alumni page on Facebook. Some of the other tidbits of information have come from things that the devs have shared, old press releases, and general conversational things. For instance, Baseball not doing well its first year -- that info came from a developer comment on one of Ron Gilbert's blog posts (which sadly is now deleted). Infogrames being awful is common knowledge when you listen to enough recountings -- pretty much nobody on the old dev team has anything nice to say about them. I can't remember where I was told that Atari was demanding a bunch, but it still becomes evident if you look at the release schedule through the years -- they went from 1-2 installments a year to 3-4, which is *very* taxing on a dev team that was shrinking.
Oh yeah, speaking of which, the mass layoffs are also common knowledge if you listen to enough recounts, but several articles also exist pointing it out.
TL;DR: A nerdy obsession that started nearly ten years ago has led to me being an encyclopedia of information.

My favorite was Bakcyard Baseball 2005. It had the most to unlock, and tons of strange powerups. I think they should have capitalized HEAVILY on the wacky powerups, and more IN the game modes. Maybe have some sort of bossfught in Home Run Derby, after you make a certain number of home runs. Maybe have a guy riding in a lawnmower you have to hit after you make 50 home runs. Make another boss as a pitcher at 100.
Have MORE wacky and interesting characters to unlock. They don't all need to be REAL baseball players. In 2005. We got a Robot! Why not add aliens, mummies, mutants and superheros? Horror and thriller characters, etc? There was tons of potential.

I live in a country where football means soccer and barely anybody knows American football, let alone understand it. But I had this inept interest in American football since I was little.
I couldn't really pin down the reason why this sport had me interested more than soccer or even basketball since forever.
But then I recently remembered that I had played Backyard Football back when I was a kid. I remembered going "what the fuck is going on?" and just picked whatever play from the playbook that had arrows pointing at the other team's side of the field and prayed to God that when it came time for them to take the ball to my side of the field, the play that I picked could stop them.
I've recently picked up Backyard Football 2006 (and yes, although it's not the same game I played when I was a kid and it's in 3D, the characters still had some of their characteristics)
Tony the Vec as QB and shotcaller, with Kimmy the sugar addict as the tackling Tight End, Maria the pink Power Ranger and Pablo fuckin Sanchez on the wide, Annie The hippie as the kicker/supplementary lineman, Keisha bashing kids' heads in on the line, and Luanne Lui dabbing on those running plays
God, I wish I was born in America just so I could play some good, old backyard football.

I would play that on nintendo switch. and had like a story and multiplayer mode and etc. so much more even an BYS olympics version idk during the olympics.
