Hi there! My name is DongDong Wu. I'm Chinese.
Last year, I left Hong Kong where I lived for 5 years, and moved to Hangzhou, China.
Living in Hong Kong and mainland China are very different. I summarized 8 major differences based on my personal experiences. Also I gave the reasons I chose to leave Hong Kong and move back to China.
Here's the breakdown for your easy navigation:
    1. 00:38 Cost of living
    2. 02:02 Density and pace of life
    3. 03:03 Internet access
    4. 03:38 International level
    5. 04:42 Fun level
    6. 05:29 E-commerce & Internet technology
    7. 06:25 Urban environment
    8. 07:18 People
07:58 Why I left Hong Kong
These are my personal opinions. Let me know if you agree or disagree. Feel free to leave me any questions you have in the comment.
    Take care everyone!
    Love,
    DongDong

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's so interesting to learn how other people live abroad. I've never been to Hong Kong or China and this will most likely be the best way for me to see and understand how it is to visit or live there. Be safe and I look forward to more of your videos.

Here in Taiwan life is very good. It’s safe, laws are not too strict and it’s probably the best place to live. Btw, I was born in north Europe and have been living in Australia for years and I still think Taiwan is better than all the places I’ve been living so far. Plus... it’s quite affordable here too.

I lived in China for 3 years and I moved back to Australia a year ago. I genuinely regret leaving and whenever I see videos like this, I really miss China. I love the lifestyle of China and I believe the negative things you point out in this video are definitely all true BUT I think there are many positives that far outweigh the negatives. The life I lead in China was so relaxed and just easy but here in Australia I honestly often just feel stressed.

It often depends on where you live but on average your life is much freer, you have more choices and there's is SIGNIFICANTLY fewer people, also freedom of speech is still a thing (even tho the left is still trying to eradicate that). I started my teaching career in Hangzhou at the end of 2019, and despite the pandemic had an amazing time there. After 14 months I moved to Shenzhen because I wanted to experience a busier city. There were definitely times I missed living in the outskirts of Hangzhou (like when I had to listen to the same line dancing music outside of my window from August to January 2021 😭).
This was a cool video to watch! I never got to visit HK since I hadn’t been in China long enough pre-pandemic to get my passport back from the PSB. It’s nice to have an inside perspective to compare the two 😁

Great video! Thank you for explaining the differences. It's quite sad but it seems like the trend is very similar in many highly populated cities. Which makes sense to a degree when comparing things such as cleanliness, maintenance and overall build quality of the city to other areas as you've mentioned but still i find that isn't enough to justify the high cost. However, it still makes life very stressful when wages seem to have been quite stagnant yet the cost of living has gone up 2-3 times sometimes even 4 times as you've mentioned comparing Hong Kong to China.

冬冬 (I hope I guessed it right),
    1. I enjoy your video.
    2. I am a 100% Chinese born in Hong Kong, received my post-secondary education in the U.S. and naturalized as a U.S. citizen since the beginning of the millennium.
    3. You are young and, dare I say, attractive, who grew up in the privileged post-門*安*天 era. (These 3 words, shown in reverse, immediately trigger censorship!)
    4. You mentioned that you have a choice. But how many of our Chinese brothers and sisters, in the mainland and now even in HK, can say the same? [no politics, just facts]
    5. I too can never find myself living in HK again, due to mostly the same reasons you listed.
    6. I will never forget the scene in which hundreds of Chinese toddlers waving their Mao's Red Flag Booklets across the Pearl River Bridge between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. That's what a communist country does to their own children. Total propaganda. They had no choice.
    7. Sincerely wish you and your family a good future. The kids you may have someday is going to grow up in a totally different communist China I experienced.
    8. Best wishes!

There is brainwashing everywhere, just turn on the TV in America and you'll see it. It's just a little more subtle. Just drive down any street in America and you'll see American flags everywhere. Oh I guess that's different, Americans are just patriotic, Chinese are nationalistic/propagandized. Ni hao. Thank you for your interesting video. I agree with you about Hong Kong being busy and stressful. I was living in a city in mainland China and had to visit Hong Kong. In the street I tried to ask for directions but people passed me by saying they were in a hurry or too busy. In mainland China where I was living, people would stop and try to help me even if they didn't speak English. Also, you mention the cinema in Hong Kong having the latest films, in mainland China there is a restriction on how many foreign films they are allowed to show, but there were pirate dvds which were sold very cheaply. There were two kinds, bad quality and good quality, the good quality dvds were very very good quality and from experience you knew which ones to buy. I saw films on dvd which later came out in the cinema two or more months later. There were many types of films and TV shows one could buy, not only those later shown in the cinema, there were so many that you were spoilt for choice. Of course, officially this was forbidden, but the shops sold them openly except only a few times a year when they were checked and then had to hide them. Needless to say most of the customers were foreign. The one thing I had a problem with in mainland China was the hospitals. They were so crowded, like a train station during the rush hour. You need to get a ticket to see the doctor and I was advised to get up early and queue up at 4am in order to get a ticket which didn't 't cost much. The scam was there were people who got there first who bought absolutely 'all' of the tickets and then sold them for a very high price to patients wanting to see a doctor in the hospital. Going to the hospital was the only thing I didn't like, however the doctors and nurses were very kind. I had to leave China, and I really didn't want to. I am now back in my own western country, but I miss living in China very much. It's a pity things are as they are, I wish I could return and live there again. I am pleased you found your peaceful pace of life back on the mainland. Take care. Zai jian.

So many questions still on my mind.. you know, there is too much desinformacion sobre China in the media and at one point tu no sabes what is true or not, so when you come to videos like this one, experiencias personales de alguien..well you start getting a better perspective of the reality. Thank you for sharing!

Dear DongDong. Really like your channel and style.
I once crossed HongKong in transit to Qingdao. Was fascinated to see mist covered islands from the airport lounge. Had a desire to learn more about HK.
You videos are my best introduction to HK & China.
    Best wishes

Hey, I'm new to your channel. I find your videos interesting!
Since you moved in a new place, will you do a decoration video just like the one for your husband's flat in Hong kong? I thought you had nice and clever ideas for small spaces! : D

My wife and I stopped over in Hong Kong for one week a few years back when we were going Japan. You are right it is quite crowded and very busy. I am also a fan of skyscrapers but when I was in Hong Kong I felt that there were too many of them. They even build them up in the mountains. I don't think I could live there.

Maybe you should specify which part of china, i was an international student in Shanghai for 3 years, the city is clean & tidy, very foreigner & disabled friendly although getting around without a level of mandarin is quite difficult it is doable. I am moving soon to hongkong soon so your video was very helpful
