Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- The first in a series of videos covering the Dwarves of Thorin’s Company. Today, we cover brothers Balin and Dwalin from Balin's birth prior to Smaug's attack on Erebor to Dwalin's potential participation in the Battle of Dale and Balin's expedition to Moria. My hope is that this series will help enrich our enjoyment of these characters in The Hobbit Trilogy.

When I read “Here Lies Balín, Lord of Moria” I almost cried.
Still gets me, especially reading the Hobbit again.
Gettin older, but when I read about that 30ish years ago I cant say I had a dry eye,Go Easy Balin he Earned his rest...
Yes. Balin was such a kind, nice character
I actually did.
Yeah, me too
Balin! I love how he even visited Bilbo afterwards, and was a real friend :)
Agreed! Before BOTFA was released, I was really hoping that we would have the final scene be Balin and Gandalf visiting with Bilbo in Bag End.
@@NerdoftheRings I really missed that too!
I always wondered. Had Bilbo known of Balins quest to retake Moria, would Bilbo had aided Balin and his company. Given his Hobbit nature he might not considering the dangers.
@@Cloofinder Now if I think about it, he probably would have slew the leaders and any strategically-minded orcs but the problem is that Durin's Bane (the Balrog) probably would have seen him since he is a maiar like Sauron also and can see both the spiritual and physical realm.
Hes now resting in peace
Balin was my favourite dwarf in the Hobbit and he was well portrayed in the films, what I liked about him is that he was a decent guy with a good head on his shoulders, was willing to call Thorin on his shit, was friends with Bilbo and stood up for Bilbo whenever Thorin was being an arsehole to him (Which was basically half the time).
Balin is my second favorite just like Bofur is my third favorite because they were so nice but Bombur is my favorite.
@@darthmaul8278 same as me then
Same!! After him come Kili and Fili (they remind me of Fred and George)
Balin was so sweet and caring toward Bilbo. Definitely my favorite Dwarf
Imagine the look on Bilbo's face when he was told of Balin's fate. :(
@@Cloofinder that is heartbreaking
@@CloofinderTruly tragic and nothing less
After seeing The Hobbit trilogy, it makes The Fellowship's discovery of Balin's tomb and his fate much more sadder once who get to know Balin, especially with Ken Stott playing as the wise dwarf.
Imagine how crushed Bilbo was when he FINALLY finds out Balin is dead in Moria after Balin's fate was unclear beforehand once he left to reestablish a kingdom there
I feel like not enough people give Dwalin credit for how good he is because he was the first of the Dwarves to stand up against corrupted Thorin and was possibly even the turning point of Thorin going back to his normal personality and also he blocked Ori when he thought Bard was trying to kill them.
After all these years now I know why Gimli was so emotional in Moria
I think Balin knew Bilbo had the Arkenstone when he asked if it would ease Thorin's Dragon Sickness.
Another note of Dwalin's respect for Ori: he lets Ori use his Warhammer while escaping the Goblins and Azog.
I love Dwalin in the flashback when wear a big mohawk on his head, so much troll slayer style ! (But less than Dain)
Balin was such a class act. ❤
Yeah he was so balling
@@judoh1678 the second I heard that name that was the first thing I imagined.
Balin was always my favorite character in "The Hobbit".
I reckon that must be Ori's body holding the book, as I believe it was Ori who chronicled the quest.
Balin was my favorite dwarf. He was the point man, his job was to essentially be Thorin's handler and made for some great scenes and he made a good mentor figure.
Dwalin was by far my favorite.
I am about to be hooked on your videos. Re reading The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings for an Online class. I first read them in 1966 when I was in HS. My then boyfriend gave me the books and told me they totally changed his life.
Welcome to the channel! I encourage anyone to get hooked on Tolkien - and my channel! Lol. 😁
Balin is a dwarf. He’s be cheering on Gimli and the halflings while drinking a pint of mead.
This tale struck me especially hard, only because I just learned that a childhood friend in Chicago, passed away yesterday. He was best friends with my younger brother, Frankie, who passed away when he was 12. We were Irish twins.
I don't know why, but this is striking me to the core. Chris was a good kid.
Now I know the meaning of the phrase, "you can't go home again."
Thank you N.O.T.R. 😞
So sorry for your loss, Joey. (Unfortunately, I know the feeling of losing a close friend too soon.) Praying for you and his family during this impossibly difficult time.
@@NerdoftheRings
My sister sent me a pic of what he currently looked like and he hadn't changed a bit. He was so easy going and easy to get along with. He befriended my brother just before he became terminally I'll and that's how we became friends.
Well, enough of the sadness. I'm looking forward to your next upload, NOTR. Thanks for the kind words.
I guess Balin & Dwalin have been called home & are now playing in a far green country.
That hit me in the feels about Balin. I didn't know who he was or what he was like until I saw The Hobbit. He and Bofur were my favorites.
The value your videos add to my rewatching of all 6 films is immeasurable. Thank you 🙏
Epic video! You forgot about Dwalin rocking the mohawk during the war of Dwaves and Orcs
Yeah it was the best moment with him, when he slash some orcs with the mohawk full of their blood
Good to hear the tale of Balin the Lord and King of Moria himself. Sad he was killed when the fellowship found his grave Gandalf and Gimli mourned him. Gimli knew immediately when he saw the tomb and who was in it because he can read Dwarf and the inscription said "Here Lies Balin Son of Fudin Lord and King of Moria" and at that moment they knew he was gone.
Was I the only one struck by the fact Roäc's age was 153 years? That's the same number of Hail Marys one would pray in the complete 15 decade rosary. After all, Tolkien was a devout catholic, so it makes sense.
I didn't realize that, Simon! Interesting fun fact!
Dwalin doesn't get enough credit.
Nice was looking forward to this one
ad was perfectly placed as bard shot his arrow at dwalin
I had no clue it was Balin in the tomb in Moria! Awesome content btw
Glad I could shed some light on this moment in LOTR! Thanks for watching/subscribing!
It's crazy how much knowledge you have! I love all these videos! I watch every night before bed!!
Poor dwarf! Balin just wanted his home back :(
In Lord of the Ring’s Gotta say that Balin and Dwalin were my favorites from the 13th Dwarves.
At the very end with the soundtrack in the background its so sad and emotional.
Conclusion: Balin held all the brain cells in the Company but shares none of them
I knew about Balins fate, but didnt know Ori was there with him too :(
Oin was there too, and he was killed by the Watcher in the Water.
When i was like seven I loved these movies.i watched hobbit first then lord of the rings when i heard her lies balin lord of moria.ofcourse ofcourse.i cried
I just seen this Hobbit movies after being convinced to finally watch the Lord of the Rings movies and I watched the Hobbit films after watching the first LotR movie because my brother said to start here. But since I watched the first movie and already knew of Balin’s fate, it made it even more tragic to see who he was in life because he was so likable. My favorite dwarf besides Thorin. I wish he didn’t die. Such a sweet soul. 😢
Love these vids. Noticed a discrepancy: 2770... two years later (2841) his brother Dwalin is born (0:10)
The Dwalin/Ori friend relationship is so cute, i am going to cry T.T
hey great job on your videos! My levels of nerdness do not reach such heights, but I can appreciate yours!
I always wonder what would’ve happened if balin had been alive during the fellowship just how much would’ve changed
MALT BEER AND A FEAST FOR THE FELLOWSHIP
Amazing content! I love the videos you post! I am a big fan
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
Best videos to watch in these days
Thanks so much! I’m glad these videos can be a bit of escape for people. Tolkien’s world is always a good one for me to escape to when things are tough or stressful.
Oh Balin and Ori and Oin 😢😢😢After being familiar with the dwarves in The Hobbits, the scene at Moria in LOTR hit way harder. Cried my eyes out.
Man I just got done watching the hobbit trilogy again last weekend and learning what happened to the sweet old man dwarf that always looked out befriended and was a kind of father like dwarf to Bilbo it’s sad to hear how he died
Damn, I wasn’t plannin on crying today
Thank you. That cleared up a lot.
Balin and Dwalin are my favorite dwarves.
4:14 turn on the subtitles: "i need explode-o-nut"
This is funny as I'm a pvz lover
@@chaosthebaryonyx6344 LOLLLL, i get that
You didn't mention he gave bilbo clothes at the start. And wanted to hear bilbos story multiple times
Thorin also looks far younger. Going by his stated age he should be around middle aged or slightly older. But how he looks and acts in the movie is far more like in his mid 20's.
Hes got a few grays but that is it
He does these SO WELL 👍
So tragic. First, they were successful to reclaim Erebor then who knows, Moria will be the last for Oin, Ori and Balin.
When I first read the hobbit, I picture Dawlin with a blue Mohawk and beard
Balin is my fav dwarf
On of the best LOTR vids Ive seen,Thank you NOTR:)
That gollum artwork was terrifyingly good
We always appreciate your hard work and dedication to make these videos. Your huge fan from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰🤝🏴.
Nice video. Subscribed! Balin is one of my favorite Middle-earth characters.
Thanks for subscribing! Glad to have you!
Dwalin is my favorite dwarf in lord of the rings
Balin was my favorite dwarf in the book and the movies. I'd definitely get a dog and name him Balin some day.
That was great, thanks man 👍🏼
"Bilbo, his name is Bilbo." 😭
Great video. Was the watcher at Durins door called 'The Watcher" because it was specifically assigned there by someone to guard the door?
The Watcher is one of those really interesting things that Tolkien leaves unknown. Ori called it “The Watcher in the Water” in the Book of Mazarbul.
It was in the lake due to the damming of the Sirannon River (beneath the Western walls of Moria). Even Gandalf doesn’t know what it is or if there were more of them.
@@NerdoftheRings I've read the books, but it's been a while so I can't quote them word for word, but in the film version, if you pay close attention Aragorn intervenes and stops either Merry or Pippen from throwing rocks into the water, and says to them, "don't disturb the water". I think that Aragorn might have suspected of such a creature and knew something that even Gandalf didn't. Then again, Aragorn did have the gift of foresight or had premonitions, visions of things that can't be seen.
The only dwarf to give Gimli a run for his money. Still think Gimli is the best dwarf that ever lived but Balin was definitely number 2.
It's hard being so young yet so wise.
Your sentiments are fantastic ....too bad the education level of most people is not
Great video, well done
i do hope the will make epic movies around these dwarves.. could provide more insight and perspectives
Oof that hit the feels
Who will be next after this...We will have to wait and see!!!
Next time Bifur Bofur and Bombur will be awesome
Dwalin is so badass
balin is so wholesome and dealing is good for the memes, sadly most of the dwarves got dropped in terms of character development more and more in the films...
The subtitles is waaay off. Woah!
Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, lord of Moria and my lord.
I really love Balin in all of Thorins Company
Balin was 7 when Smaug came? I thought they were all at least adults at that time, dwarves have a lifespan of about 240 years, hence why they all remember the day Smaug came 60 years later when The Hobbit takes place.
The movie certainly portrays it that way, I understand not taking the hobbit movies as completely accurate because they’ve been proven to be false in many ways, but I definitely thought they were all at least adults or young adults at the time.
I like balin the most of all the dwarves
I'm not a book nerd, I'm a movie fan. I watched LOTR once then later on I watched The Hobbits. Because it is there and back again, so I re-watched the LOTR and found that I missed many things, and the scene where they narrated "Here's Lies Balin, Lord of Moria", I was so pitiful for him
Dwalin actually became Lord of Ered Luins (Thorins hall) the home that the dwarves found after smaug
Balin was always ballin
Enjoy it very much
Learning about ori writing that makes Gandalf reading it have more weight.
They couldn't have been looking for the ring of thror in moria, as we know after thror is killed thrain was given the last of the seven drawven rings of power but was taken by sauron when he improsined thrain in dolgol dur.
Balin and the other dwarves didn't know that Thor gave his ring to Thrain and that it was taken by Sauron when Thrain was captured. They thought it was lost somewhere in Moria.
@@faramir3466 you got me on that one.
I'm not saying they would have gotten in time to help but as soon as word stopped coming I'd think dwslin would go check things out atleast
The only good part, for me, about the hobbit movies is balin.
Reasonable and Kind, but when it comes to being a batshit insane dwarf he is all in.
Not wanting to let his frined become even more mad but all about kicking elven butt and fighting in the Front row.
Dwalin is my fav
Damn Dwarves get property young.
Alternative title:
"Balin - Tolkien explained - Dwarves of Erebor (oh, and Dwalin too lol)"
Dwalin is reincarnated as an 18th century Scottish chieftain. His personality remains similar.
I say the stress of a Dragon attacking the home cause maturity within his body and he started producing pigments to indicate to his people I'm a Silverback I've learned some s*** I've lived through some s***
Nonverbal communication, valuable information here! with the silver & grey~ similar to what Gandalf and Saruman represented with white hair
The value of wisdom
This isn't just random I had some weird levels of stress for human in this day and age and i started producing white & ginger hair under 18
There's a value in it
We out here trying to function with mountain deeps and caverns old
Azanulbizar. Now, this is not a criticism, but pronouncing it as 'Azza-nah bull-zarr' seems a bit flat and American. In need of some hot pepper. I always felt the thrill of pronouncing Dwarvish names lay in giving them an almost Arabic rolling, sizzling fire. Go for 'Ah-tsa-nool-bee-zarr'! Roll your 'r's', hiss your 'zed's', gurgle your vowels and fricatives!
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate you giving a phonetic spelling as well. I've been practicing since I saw your comment. I feel like I'm on to something much more dwarvish-sounding now. :) I knew my American-ness would pop up once in a while, so it's all about keeping it to a minimum! lol
@@NerdoftheRings My favourite is Zirak-Zigil. I had an Israeli friend who pronounced it as "Tzee-RACHK Tzee-GEEL and I thought it sounded delicious. Tolkien was a linguist, first and foremost and it's always worth the effort to add the flavour of something foreign to the tongues of Middle Earth. I personally pronounce The Black Speech with the hissing and horking sounds I practiced when I learned Russian. Liv Tyler spoke Elvish like someone from Los Angeles speaking French and it really, in my opinion, damaged her performance. Whereas Viggo got it just right. I feel. By the way, found your posts last night and am really enjoying them!
Can someone please explain to me what happened to the year count from 2770 TA to 2841 TA when he says "two years later" ? Is it just a typo or am I missing something? Thank you.
I didn't read the hobbit or lotr until my 20s, and I read the hobbit first. I was genuinely saddened to learn of Balin's fate.
I think balin is a better dwarf than any other dwarves
The hobbit did a real shit job of developing any of the dwarves apart from balin and thorin, the less said about fili the better
Why does Balin look way older then seven when Smaug attacked?
I thought I recalled seeing Balin in the scene where smaug destroyed erebor. But he was just 7 in that scene? I could be mistaken of course.
thats only in the book, in the movie they changed some stuff to make thorinn more of a younger, hotheaded and strong character and made balin the oldest and wisest.
So I assume Balin's tomb was prepared for him? Because it had the inscription...
What is the background song? it's such a soothing piece
