I'm stunned, Ali. I actually heard the word "genocide". I chewed out CNN earlier for one appalling segment, and called it out as well as MSNBC at the same time for spinelessly refusing to use the word. Next big question that must be answered: Why has there been a fascist response to the protesting students, to the protesting of genocide, as though Trump Was Still In Office?
I can think of any number of thoughtful, moral, conscientious people who disagree with James Frankie Thomas. Her absolute certainty in the correctness of her own position (that it is the logical equivalent of saying the sky is blue and that anyone who disagrees with her is not a serious person) makes me think that she would benefit from spending a little more time outside her political bubble. I, for one, very much appreciated PEN America's mature and well-considered stance on this.
James Frankie Thomas. I salute you! More people should be brave enough make their decisions like you: whether or not your conscience will will be OK with them, and whether you'll be able to look at yourself in the mirror. 90% of our Republican politicians will fail this acid test, I'm sure. Those are 37 years well worth living!
As James points out, facts are facts and no amount of prevaricating will alter them. Tolerance of others’ views is fine as long as those views do not support - or sidestep - atrocities. At a certain point, “tolerance” becomes abuse.
Genocide is the attempted eradication of a race of people. The UN has said Israel is committing human rights violations but not genocide. As a benchmark during our war we turned a blind eye to Russia’s atrocities in Chechnya. But that was not genocide.
@@unfingbelievable1 Then a "nation" of people, considering the Palestinians as a nation who have had their homeland seized as a booty of war. The choice of word does not matter. There is a difference between trying to eradicate a people versus callous disregard for human life. The latter is actually more insidious an issue for Americans because it is much more common in the populous.
According to the UN Convention genocide is legally "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group." Killing one person because of their ethnicity is legally genocide. There are far better descriptions of what Israel is doing here: mass murder, atrocity, collective torture, wholesale slaughter, etc. Most Americans associate 'genocide' with the 'common sense' meaning you mention, not with the legal meaning the protestors are using. And it is clear that the Israeli government - however brutal and unjustified - is not trying to eradicate every Palestinian. The term may technically be correct, but politically it is unhelpful and works against the goals of peace and a two-state outcome.
To keep silent or to say we don't know (without trying to educate oneself) about the brutal genocide Israel is doing to the Palestinians is to be complicit. Violence will never bring true peace.
