    One thing: Clichés can work well, I mean they're such good tools that's why people use them all the time. Saying it was a dark and stormy night presents a tone, a first step into the setting, and a first step into plot as why the character is running for cover in the (haunted, per se) mansion. Yes, it's bad now because everyone recognizes it, but you could use it to your advantage. Example: It was a dark and stormy night, or at least I had wanted it to be.
    Once upon a time I killed seven men.
    Once upon a time, on a dark and stormy night, a tree fell and took off my legs.
    All of these share a common usage: They all share the contrast. Everyone knows the tropes and regular ideas presented with these sentence starters, so using that to your advantage can be valuable. I can contrast the happy go lucky fairy tale mood with a gruesome tale instead, or present a challenge or opinion in the story facing or belonging to the main character.
    Clichés aren't bad. They certainly can become bad, but if used to your advantage, they can be valuable tools. Cheers.

      Thankyou so much I've been thinking of using a cliche to hook my audience for an imaginative followed by a simile to describe what the trip had felt like after arriving at the destination but my teacher said I'll lose marks for using cliche, I'm gonna do it anyway examiners are marking not her

    Okay so I have a question: in my English language exam I panicked and ended my piece with ‘it was all a dream’ because I had 2 minutes to write a resolution... is this a bad thing to do?

    • @vcestudyguidesonline
      @vcestudyguidesonline  5 років тому +8

      It's not 'bad', just cliche.

    • @ohshiieeeeeee438

      Bruh that’s disgustingly bad.... I wouldn’t worry though if the rest of your piece was bomb, I’m 💯💯% that the examiners will understand though with time limitations and stuff

    Some of her points are subjective because teachers will grade each paper differently, even if the paper has cliches. Again, it depends on the professor or teacher grading the essay. Is Lisa using a rubric to scale her grading criteria , or just rambling off her personal peeves?

    Hi! I auditioned for an arts high school for creative writing, and for one of the writing pieces I ended it with But Linh had a plan (we only had 30 minutes, and I don’t think we were supposed to write a whole story). Is that okay??

    what do you mean by timeline that drag out

    • @vcestudyguidesonline
      @vcestudyguidesonline  2 роки тому

      Hi there, this pointer means that in your creative piece, you should communicate the MOST important plot points, rather than focusing on parts of the timeline that do not really need to be included. This will help to ensure that you can convey a story that is concise and clear within 1000 words :)

    As an amateur writer just be as compelling as possible.
    With fiction at sub 1,000 words just write the story you want to write. If you continue to study the craft your short fiction, and overall writing abilities will improve.

    Look, to be fair, if you *watch* entertainment with you eyes then you would obviously be more interested in the visual aspect and story itself, the first episode of Attack on Titan doesn’t count precisely because it was the first episode of Attack on Titan, every Anime has to have a budget as well. Just remember that words can be ok if the visual aspect of composition, colour theory, shapes and line art can tell the story without much need of words

    Hi Lisa, I'm not a native English speaker. The most difficult for me when it comes to creative writing is the examples I use. I don't have a lot of famous examples or cultural background. All i have for now are the things happened around me. I think they're just too small to be mentioned and maybe seemed as stupid. E.g.: some people maybe have an example as the Protagonist in a famous TV show but i only have some examples that i see/hear. I'm currently struggling with college creative writing. Do you have any suggestions, please? Thanks
