Saw him live about a year ago and it was Great ! Played Frankenstein for almost 20 minutes. Couldn't hear nothing for three days after. Best concert in a long time.
I never realized how much talent this one guy had. It takes someone special to play not one, but 3+ instruments like he does here. Not to mention the effects board solo, that rocked on so many levels.
soniclightbolt94 Actually that's a modular synthesizer of some kind. Maybe some SynthFreaks friends have a better idea? bur it's out of focus so very hard to say what kind...probably a MOOG.
How did this guy not become one of the best-known musicians ever? His artistic use of the mixing board reminded me of Jimi Hendrix. A musician exploding with creative genius. Makes me wonder if he would have been deified along side Jimi and Janice had he died prematurely like them. Sad if that's what it takes to be recognized as a timeless musical prodigy.
This gets the badass of badassery award! Jammed to this song a million times... finally got around to looking it up and watching it. Man they just don't make music like they used to.
I enjoyed hearing Edgar introduce the tune from that era itself. It pretty much started out as a funky studio drum rehearsal jam that morphed into this version of "Frankenstein" which is literally mind blowing.
To Rhino 888... Yep, that's Jerry Weems. A really nice guy. Went to high school with him @ Wooster High in Reno. When I first started getting into guitar, he used to set up my instrument at what was to become Bizarre Guitar. He always remembered me from school, and never had an air about him. Sadly gone now, but I did get to see him play alot back home. Happy to leave this note!! Duggan.
i was 12 when my big sister played this on the stereo for the 1st time...even as a kid i loved the music, even the album cover was cool because it was freaky lookin'....wish there were more multi-talented artists like EW...badass
I liked this song ever since I was a teenager in the 80's. I'm a musician so as I got older I got better & better equipment and when I finally could afford Grados I started to appreciate some musicians more than others. This song sounds completely different thru them and u hear things that u never heard. Now I think Edgar Winter is probably a musical genius, gifted like Mozart was
My friend and I actually worked for the EWG at that time, mostly photography work. Sadly, Edgar is the only surviving member of the lineup that features Dan Hartman, Chuck Ruff and the great Ronnie Montrose. So much talent there.
My dad played this song in the truck when I was a little kid. He’d turn it up full blast at the “spaceship” part as I referred to it. This song made me want to play music and enjoy creative stuff like this. So thankful... Found out that my favorite current musician, Dave Grohl was inspired by this song so much it made him want to play music.
Drummer Chuck Ruff once stated that after the bicycle horn had worn out, he gave it a proper burial at sea. Pacific, I think, since he was a Californian.
I saw them in 72' , they were touring the songs off this album . The concert I was at the had a nice light show and smoke at that one part of the song .
Man all that cool stuff happening at 7:10+ .... with as much tech as we have today why do we have no modern processors that can recreate these incredible sounds :(
Not many know this... you must be an industry insider. Jerry went friggin' AWOL from the Army to grab this gig. It even took Edgar by surprise. How'd you know it was Weems?
Jerry's cousin is a friend of mine. He remembered Jerry as a kid coming home from school and playing his guitar until bedtime. If only it was that easy. He had a gift. I was glad to find his videos on UA-cam. I happened to see Edgar and Johnny both in Dayton two years ago along with Rick Derringer. Edgar's performance was as good as 40 years ago. High energy.
Rhino888S And it looks like Dan Hartman on bass, I heard he played bass as well as a mean guitar himself and the keyboars and also sang a bunch and wrote and composed as well as produced Free Ride. Sad to see a great talent like Hartman not around anymore, good tip on the guitarist, I didnt know who that was, but I knew it wasnt Derringer. Both are outstanding
Rhino888S Yes, you are correct. Jerry was great...sad he left us so soon. Many are unaware that he wrote the guitar solo on "Free Ride", and the original version featured Jerry's playing. Of course it was re-recorded with Rick Derringer, though he still played Jerry's solo note for note. I still have a vinyl copy of that Bonaroo album...both Jerry Weems and Bobby Winkleman shared guitar duties there.
What a great and under appreciated drummer Chuck Ruff was
loudonrebel I was thinking the same thing, he's doing some pretty complicated rhythms there. Did he ever do anything after the Edgar Winter thing?
Kevin Enos he played with Sammy Hager and had the Chuck Ruff band in Reno Nevada. He passed away in 2011.
Absolutely! RIP
Saw him live about a year ago and it was Great ! Played Frankenstein for almost 20 minutes. Couldn't hear nothing for three days after. Best concert in a long time.
You can tell this band is having a blast while playing this.
Daniel Boyd Actually that's a semi- modular ARP 2600 ;-)
dudewhosaysarrh Thanks! I stand corrected. :)
his playing was ahead of it's time .
The person doing the interview is Rick Derringer

It's a real shame, but I can't think of many artists today that exhibit this kind of love and passion for what they do. Thanks for uploading this.
The winter brothers are amazing...
NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I HEAR THIS SONG IT BLOWS ME AWAY... LIVE VERSION IS ALWAYS BETTER THEN THE STUDIO VERSION...
This gets the badass of badassery award! Jammed to this song a million times... finally got around to looking it up and watching it. Man they just don't make music like they used to.
edgar winter the most talented musician in rock and roll history

Jerry Weems has passed on? When? I tried searching for him but nothing comes up! Damn, another great musician!
RIP Chuck Ruff 1951-2011.
One of the best performances ever not many people can pull that off never mind write it
Epic Amazing song! And great memories of listening to it with my dear departed dad and riding around smoking a Doobie!
Sure says a lot for a song with no words ~ mega hit!
i was 12 when my big sister played this on the stereo for the 1st time...even as a kid i loved the music, even the album cover was cool because it was freaky lookin'....wish there were more multi-talented artists like EW...badass
Wow.....this is amazing. Edgar is the only one that is still alive. What an incredible performance!
Correct
that songs always blew me away.
Thank you Jesus for this amazing albino man...
This is really cool, sound and visual performance. I don't know how anyone could 'thumbs down' this.
Superb rock performance! Right on! EWG was tight!
Incredible version of a great song.
I liked this song ever since I was a teenager in the 80's. fantastic ,a really great talent you just can't find that now a days.
Way ahead of there time! These guys are pretty amazing
everyone is playing one hundred percent on point
I saw Johnny and Edgar Winter at Southern Illinois University--Edwardsville around 1976. Very good concert.
My friend and I actually worked for the EWG at that time, mostly photography work. Sadly, Edgar is the only surviving member of the lineup that features Dan Hartman, Chuck Ruff and the great Ronnie Montrose. So much talent there.
So awesome! Killer song! But its pretty funny that during the interview, they both sound like Mr. Rogers :)
Ahhh...THANK YOU FOR POSTING! Sometimes It's very hard to remember GOOD MUSIC the way it used to be!!!!
Man, this is something else...
Beaumont Port Arthur was a cauldron of musical styles.
Happy 69th Edgar!
Edgar does a great sax solo on "Fair warning" by Todd Rundgren
SUPERB! This put the rock in rock n roll
Today's bands could learn some work ethics from this video.
Now that's one talented man right there!!
Drummer Chuck Ruff once stated that after the bicycle horn had worn out, he gave it a proper burial at sea. Pacific, I think, since he was a Californian.
Unbelievable! Frankenstein...
I was the "100th" Like and I should have been the "100,000th". Nothing rocks like this anymore.
Edgar plays everything
Love this old song that came out when I was 21 years old!
i saw this at the war memorial in rochester ny. they had a quirky sound system that he manipulated with a joystick. the sound went around your head.
I saw them in 72' , they were touring the songs off this album . The concert I was at the had a nice light show and smoke at that one part of the song .
Edgar just sounds so cool :D
Really, really hot. Great performances all around! Inspiring and ballsy!
IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!
Did I ever mention how much I love that little bike horn? XD
i got the whole lp on dvd 5.1. plus i have the Quad 8 tape too. Both this and free ride sound great in surround.
This is freakin' cool!
FANTASTIC FRANKENSTEIN ,...EDGAR !
One os the best songs ever!
Epic performance
I swear I saw him at a 4th of july festival in cetral texas in the late 70s , didn't play just saw him ,
A Very young Ronnie Montrose on guitar
Outstanding!
Whats not to like about this....retro magic....what a classic...
Thanks for upload, excellent live playing, dig Edgar on the Sax Solo!!!
I think Edgar's playing an Arp synth of some kind. I remember that he did promotions for Arp back around '73.
+devobob6 ARP 2600 synth
Rick Derringer always supported to the Winters
Man all that cool stuff happening at 7:10+ .... with as much tech as we have today why do we have no modern processors that can recreate these incredible sounds :(
Now thats when music had some balls!!
Marvellous!
One word...justo one...YEAH...¡¡¡

Great thankyou for putting this up.Love it!!!
Good watch.

Bad Ass! He must Have really admired Frank Zappa and The Mothers!
what is wrong with this guy don't he no that one person should not be able to have this much talent .just unreal amazing l

BADASS!
Yes, Rick Derringer.
The best piece and most complex ever written in rock history.
Wow Sounds good Live . . . . Frosty
Absooute MONSTER jam!!
SICK!!!!
Nice wowsa when I can groove in contentment with all visible views of this mashup.
Everybody in this video is deceased except EW. Holy h3ll where has the time gone?
amazing after all these years .... one of the best songs ever.... beside Hocus Pocus by Focus...
That's Gram Parsons doing beginning interview. Look him up if you don't know his offering to music.
BEst instrumental of all time in my opinion. Soul Sacrifice by Santana would be my 2nd choice
Wow!
Wow¡¡¡¡
Gram Parsons was great!
That is awesome!!! I wonder if the part at 5:48 that Edgar is playing influenced EVH?
Guitarist on white SG is Jerry Weems, not Ronnie Montrose.
Not many know this... you must be an industry insider. Jerry went friggin' AWOL from the Army to grab this gig. It even took Edgar by surprise. How'd you know it was Weems?

Norm Mowry We saw Jerry with some band after Edgar, can't remember the name, Star Donaldson was also on guitar, they were killer.
Rhino888S And it looks like Dan Hartman on bass, I heard he played bass as well as a mean guitar himself and the keyboars and also sang a bunch and wrote and composed as well as produced Free Ride. Birth of the Keytar.
8:33 [headbanging intensifies]
R.I.P - Chuck Ruff, Ronnie Montrose, and Dan Hartman. 3/4 of this band in jammin with the big man up there
Abida Babida
Add guitarist Jerry Weems to that list. Sad.
Is he doing some kind of feedback loop noise music type thingy there?
Ronnie Montrose?
What's a turntable?
Man...Oh...Man.
Ronnie Montrose !!!
I love the sacs much better than the guitar....
Bears comparison to Hocus Pocus by Focus. And that's saying a lot!
