    I have used both for pike and musky fishing, and now I use Flourocarbon for almost everything. More fish, no disadvantages. I use pre-made 100 lb or 130 lb fluoro with Fastach snaps. I love that combination. Good video, thanks!

      I know for a fact Flora works better. Done the same tests as you with a pike angler with over 30yrs experience who’s also sponsored and gets paid for fishing…and hands down floor works better and catches more fish….ESPECIALLY on waters they are fished for on the regular…great video mate but I’m also gutted that now lots of people are going to know that little trick! We were ahead until now 😂

    I used some 100lb fluoro leaders on my most recent fishing trip (pike fishing in Manitoba, about 2 weeks ago)...they were fantastic....much better to handle compared to steel and titanium that I used in the past....it's all I'll use now. Got some terminal tackle and line to tie my own.

    Not much you can take from your experiences except on those two occasions it made a difference. I've been faffing with leaders recently for fishing small < 7cm lures. Wire is the only way forward with lures that size, so I've been trying different ones to see which impede the action of the lure the least. I've also noticed the connections make a difference. The type of snap link does have an effect, as does using a swivel to tie the main line to the leader. I've taken to connecting the main line to the wire leader with an Albright knot which seems to allow the lure to work better.

    From Pike anglers club of GB and lure Anglers club
    For any who may be interested the response on the subject I got from the PAC was as follows:
    "It is very difficult to give a definitive answer to your question although The PAC would always recommend the use of a wire trace of 30lb or above. A heavy flourocarbon can and does work as a leader, however there is always the possibility that the pike could cut through it during a protracted fight."
    The angler I e-mailed from the LAS also replied:
    "Its not a material I am happy being used as a leader for pike. I have used it as an uptrace for perch rather than wire on one venue where carp and pike take baits intended for perch and had the body of the rig suffer a bite off with 80lb seaguar.
    I must point out I know a couple of people who have never suffered a bite off with the stuff though.
    I have also used yo zuri's fc in 150lb with sprats tied to it and no hooks just to see how easy it was for pike to cut through it, it was far too easy for them to do it. One major difference I found with the way I had constucted my leader and antony who uses it a lot was I crimped largeish open loops where he has the crimp tight to the clip, every bite off I suffered with the sprats was on the loop so maybe mechanically fc is more prone to failure the way I set it up."
    ~
    For the time being at least, as fluorocarbon doesn't seem 100% reliable, I will be sticking with wire for my traces. I will maybe try titanium, as I hear it's less prone to kinking. A bit pricy though.
    Thankyou to both and I hope this info is of use to anyone else considering different trace materials

      My argument has been that I've never seen a fish bite off fluorocarbon BUT i have seen the damage a wire trace made when the fish wrapped itself whilst thrashing around. All boils down to personal preference. As long as the fluro is replaced the first sign of a nick in it is paramount

      @@MJ-85 Making a decision like this based on purely personal experience is a flawed rationale... not trying to be derogatory towards you in any way btw... but if I reversed the line materials in your comment and said that was MY experience, would you take it as proof fluro is more dangerous ?... of course not ! ..

    Its a quandary we lure fish the canal for Perch on ultralight rods but there are a few Pike about and maybe we will get bitten off 30% of the time using 8lb braid and 10lb monofil leaders. The Perch have been very picky since new year so I've made some short 10lb steel braid traces to see if that helps with Bite Offs and doesn't put off the Perch . Question is at what point would Fluorocarbon be an option? Go thick and the Perch won't play go thin and the Pike are stealing my lures? 20lb Fluoro? we are not talking big Pike rarely we see one of close to 10lb

    I also prefer fluorocarbon because it's lighter than wire. I use a lot of suspending baits and the wire causes the nose to sink a bit faster, and the action isn't as good as with a fluoro leader.

    I purchased a new rod and reel, had a wire reader on it. Got nothing. Had a downsize rod with flourocarbon cast it out, and got
    Instant response. Took the downsize bait on my new rod, just to get a bite on the new equipment. Still nothing. Changed the leader on the rod to FC. Instant response. This was a process of several sessions in a water with VERY high fishing pressure.

  • @nixielee

    I've had similar experiences with good fluoro sessions, but I'm not convinced. Bait position in the water is probably the biggest difference. A thin titan strand should be impossible for a pike to notice and hooks don't catch like in fluoro knots, so it's easier to fish with.

    Hi Dan I don't think it's a good idea that you promote the use of fluorocarbon as a leader for any type of pike fishing publicly as a lot of people watch your channel and I do believe that there will be a lot of pike with lures left in there mouths once they have bitten through especially with barbed hooks 1 mm thick or not their teeth are designed to cut and razor sharp especially if you hook something big
    I always use wire trace when targeting pike and think that they do focus on the lure rather than the leader I also believe that it's about giving the fish a sporting chance rather than how many you can catch I have had an incredible amount of pike I'm my life big and small all on wire
    Some inexperienced anglers will be watching and I think they should always use wire
    Yes I am old school sorry

    • @SpiceisRice
      @SpiceisRice 2 роки тому +2

      Have you ever actually used heavy fluorocarbon? I can tell you unequivocally that no matter the size of the pike, it will not bite through 1mm+ fluoro that is designed for use as leader material. If the leader breaks at that diameter it is due to faulty product or your knots (both of which are issues that can and do arise with wire) not the abrasion resistance of the fluoro.
      You have to change your leaders out often with fluoro, as if the leader is compromised in anyway then it has the possibility of failing, but again the same should be practiced when using wire.
      Wire doesn't give the fish a sporting chance, it cuts deep grooves into the mouths of the fish if hooked in an awkward area. It can also cause huge lacerations up the body of the fish if they spin in your line.
      There is absolutely no reason not to use fluoro (other than when using lighter lures as explained by Dan). I lived in the Netherlands for 6 years (pike we can only dream of in the UK), and have fished all through the big pike countries (Norway, Sweden) they almost exclusively use heavy fluoro, and have done for years, putting multiple record breaking pike on the boat with the stuff, it's not even a question if it holds up. A lot of the European anglers frown against deadbaiting, they don't like the fact that the pike are very often deep hooked when using bait, but still use fluoro, so that says something about giving the fish a "sporting chance" rather than just putting numbers on the bank.
      It's always made me laugh that these fellas pulling out 30+lb pike regularly, and have been doing for generations, all trust fluoro. But fellas in the UK who have a pb of 11lb caught off a deadbait on a commercial will lecture you on how "pike will easy bite through anything but 30000lb titanium wire" and how it's about being sporting not numbers.

    It makes a difference 100%, I don't see how anyone can think otherwise. Pike use their eyesight alongside their lateral line to actively hunt, so anything that doesn't visually look right they're less likely to hit.
    Something else you missed is that it's also better on the fish, doesn't cut into them if they wrap around your line, or slice into their jaws. The amount of fish with gnarly mouths cos of wire is shocking.
    Notice that it's only the stubborn ald heads who think it doesn't make a difference. Same fellas who were saying pike 100 percent can bite through fluoro only a few years ago, now they know they can't they say it doesn't make a difference anyway. Wake up grandad the future is now hahahaha.

    • @PS26864
      @PS26864 2 роки тому +1

      Rarely read such a stupid comment. Fluoro is NOT 100% pikeproof. And a pike doesn't hit when it looks not visually right? Wake up, a pike in hunting mode! will hit anything! when its presented in the right depth. And the argument that titanium damages the fish more is completely bs. When you don't want to ,hurt' a fish you have to quit fishing.

    • @SpiceisRice
      @SpiceisRice 2 роки тому +2

      @@user-nt4wj8my9o they do worry about the hooks and snaps. Fish aren't consistent, one day the hooks and snaps might be enough to put the pike off taking the lure, the next they aren't and the pike takes it fine, same can be said with the leader choice. Thing is the snaps and hooks are 100 percent necessary to catch the fish, a wire trace isn't.
      You're basically trying to make the presentation as realistic as is possible (which is obviously difficult cos your chucking a lump of plastic) why wouldn't you want a softer, clear trace over a heavy, opaque one.
      Think of them all as variables that will put the fish off. A wire trace is just adding another variable that makes you less likely to catch.
