- This video wasn't fun to make-despite the great joy it was to talk to my long-term pastor and mentor, Robert Vincent. It is a delicate and difficult thing to leave a church, school, or mission agency. I don't counsel it lightly, and neither does Pastor Robert Vincent. He has given me wise counsel many times, so I asked him to give it to my viewers. If you're the pastor of a KJV-Only church, a leader in a KJV-Only church, a layman in a KJV-Only church, or a missionary with a KJV-Only mission board-what do you do when you realize that the Bible does not teach the banner doctrine of your group? How do you act wisely and graciously, in love for the sheep and the Lord?

I use the MEV and NKJV as primary translations and use the NASB and ESV as secondary translations and occasionally use the NLT or NIV. I came from a lifelong use of the KJV and while I reference it, I no longer use it as a primary translation. It was a happy day when I came to understand that I could use a different translation. Mark's channel played a role so keep up the good work.

Dr. Lynn Cohicks [Gospels and Acts] and Dr. Nijay Gupta [Letter and Revelation] were put on the NLT Translation Committee in June of 2022, both believe very publicly the Bible allows for female pastors. Dr. Jeannine Brown is on the NIV translation committee [ NT ] starting in 2009, and she is pro-female pastors. The ESV2016 will most likely incorporate the ESV-CE next revision. -- So, as long as you are okay with the Theology of Cohicks, Gupta and Brown impacting the Bibles you use in their next revision you are good.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
The first time I heard about KJV only "I asked what did believers do before that translation was published?"
Or, before the Matthew's Bible of 1537, what did believers do????

I'm sure they knew the Bible verse that states there would be a perfect Bible coming out in 1611, and spent all the time before that learning Elizabethan English in anticipation.
@@russell13904 Well, to begin with, "Ye" and "Thee" were not common words in 1611 and were not added till a later revision. I know "perfect" is like to be thrown around, but I don't believe the KJV is perfect, I believe is it "correct."

This was such a blessing. I often miss those UIT days sitting around the table and learning from men of the past.
1:02:30 - the problem I have observed is that people who leave this way do so with a condescending and demeaning attitude of arrogance that is destructive. They happily point out to everybody (whether asked or not) how "smart" they have become and how "backwards" the pastor and church they left were.
I’ve seen this, too. You are right. But, fwiw, and I think it’s worth a lot, the vast majority of people who talk to me (many of these are pastors themselves) are not this way, and I constantly urge humility and gratitude.
@Mark Ward I was not lumping either of the men in the video in that group. I apologize if it appeared otherwise. I was also directing my comment to the timestamp where you were discussing laypeople and non-leadership roles. While there are notable exceptions, I would agree that the majority of pastors undertake this with the necessary level of humility.

@@markwardonwords The problem with leaving a KJV church in Seattle is all the pastors know each other, so if you cause problems... the next place you go will know.
Great video! I really appreciate the humble and gracious spirit you both display. In general I am opposed to trying to change the doctrine of a church, but I am a congregationalist so I suppose there must be a time to bring the issue before the congregation and let them decide. Still, I would think that the majority of the time, the best option is simply to leave the church as peaceably as possible.

My husband is KJVO and I am not. It can be quite a topic of division between us when we try and fellowship. I make an effort to only use the KJV when sending him scriptures or if we are debating certain doctrines etc so not to cause any issues, as I believe I have the freedom to use whatever translation (within reason obviously) to study.
He follows KJVonlyist guys who frankly concern me greatly with how angry and mean spirited they are. My husband as well as most the people he follows, are big Ruckman supporters.
I am happy to trust God's timing in him maybe one day moving from KJVo stance, however between now and whenever that may happen (if ever) I'd like to suggest "nicer" KJV preachers to my husband.

Having shepherded a church through this transition, I can say with confidence that I wish I had this video three years ago. There is such sound and Christ-honoring advice in this video that, had I known them back then, I would've saved myself a world of difficulty. Nevertheless, thank you. This was still amazing.

I left First Baptist Church of Marysville Washington about 20 years ago when they went from using the NASB exclusively to starting to use the NLT. The NASB I could handle, the NLT is a translation I simply could not go with for many reasons. Since leaving the NASB the Church has been renamed “Mercy Fellowship” and is an “Acts 29” church and is a no longer somewhere I would ever darken the door.
At the two KJV Churches I attend (ODBC and SBC in Seattle) I would think about 25% of the congregations would leave immediately even under the best circumstance of a pastor changing from the KJV. In talking to a few people, they agreed that would be a reasonable estimate. The rest of the church would fade over time to larger churches with better programs, etc.
As Mark Ward would say: “the KJV is not-or rather, is no longer-a vernacular translation” well, that is fine, but the issue with modern translations is not vernacular. Nor is an agreed to Critical Text. The arbitrary variation of subjective selections of manuscripts along with the dictates of the Derivative Copyright Law (17 U.S.C. 103) yields an impossibility to have agreement between two modern versions. Then the issue of the ESV, NLT, NIV, etc., all having active translation committees working on their next revision. Thus, if I leave the KJV I can never say the “bible” in my hands is the correct translation of the correct manuscripts, I can never hold my Bible up and say it IS the Word of God.
Am I alone in my opinion? I think not. I would guess 25% of KJV-Only will never be moved.
If your faith just based on that the KJV is the correct translation of the correct manuscripts, be careful not build your foundation on sand.
@@Samy-sx6kn I am fully aware of problematic issues related to KJV-Only, but they pale in comparison to the problems faced in textural & translational issues of varying modern translations.
What people will not accept is the Derivative Copyright Law requires changes of meaning (new authorship) from extant versions of the Bible which forces errors to enter the new versions. So I have faith in the KJV, with knowledge of legal requirement which force error into modern translation.

The KJV translators had to follow rule number #1: "The ordinary Bible read in the Church, commonly called the Bishops' Bible, to be followed, and as little altered as the original will permit."
That is not the same as the Derivative Copyright Law:
17 U.S.C. 103: "The copyright in a compilation or derivative work extends only to the material contributed by the author of such work, as distinguished from the preexisting material employed in the work, and does not imply any exclusive right in the preexisting material. The copyright in such work is independent of, and does not affect or enlarge the scope, duration, ownership, or subsistence of, any copyright protection in the preexisting material."
The KJV was not only was not REQUIRED by law to make changes to the Bishop's, it was not supposed to make changes. Modern versions are REQUIRED to make changes in meaning, new authorship, to receive a copyright.
This is not my "opinion," it is the law. Which is why you will not find any modern versions of the bible with no changes in meaning (not words) in any chapter of any book of the OT.
@@casey1167 The Revised Version committee was also under orders to change as little as possible. Their translation had no need to conform to American copyright law. The end result was still noticeably different, and it's not simply because they updated their base text for the New Testament. It just happens that different translation committees have different ideas of what's a necessary change. (For the RV committee, the main goal seemed to be making the translation as literal as possible, no matter how much damage it did to the beauty of the text. Hence why the RSV undid so much of their work and went back to the less-literal wording of the KJV!)
@@MAMoreno The RV made over 5,000 changes based on the critical text. So, I would have to look at what those were and really make a decision if the "older is better" was a reasonable argument for the change in underlying text.
Frankly, I know nothing about the RV, but my bet is I would more or less like it. I like the Websters, Youngs, etc.
I pulled it up online, and it really appears to read very close to the KJV. (My focus is always the OT) Yes, 1 John 5:7&8 is out, and I see some other CT revisions but it is not too bad.
You are correct though, it is pretty flat as compared to the KJV. I don't know enough to know if the RV is more literal than the KJV, would take me a long time to come to that comfort level to agree or disagree. Scholars saying it is more literal means nothing to me. The KJV has been under attack since 1611, and after hours and hours on each point I have found the attacks are not well founded if at all.
I met a missionary who was KJV only but some time ago, grew out of it.
Missionary to the Navajo Tribes in NM. Lost most of his support and to this day, struggles, because IFB KJVO churches dropped their support because he could not use the KJV with folks who barely knew English.
Right! So sad! It makes me think of Jesus' words about the Pharisees: "They bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers."

This was very helpful to me brothers , I am in a church where the question of the TR is a small topic among the members but is generally accepted among the officers . We are looking at a new main preaching elder and and I happen to know that his position like my own . I really hope this isn’t a problem for my church.
So, the TR issue is 25% of the Bible. Since the OT manuscript text is actually pretty stable, which modern Bible version is the most correct in translation of the OT?
@@casey1167 how would I know , I can’t read Hebrew brother ? I have to Kelly on the faithful believing community to produce English translations that can be understood . This is why I read : NKJV , NASB, ESV, CSB, in my daily reading.

I guarantee you of the four versions you list, there is not one single chapter in the OT where they agree with each other in meaning. One has to be the better translation.
Look at Genesis 3:16, Genesis 16:5, and Jeremiah 32:33 in the versions you list and tell me which one is the best translation, and tell me if the variation in meaning is because of "scholarship" or "changes needed for copyright purposes"
Once you go from "oh, it seems the same" to "is this a change of meaning that is copyrightable" it completely changes how you look at versions.

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? I’m sure a lot of Catholics are very “godly” people, does that make them doctrinally correct?
It’s your business if you want to use whatever translations you want. Use the passion translation if you wish, but you should at least honor the heritage of the king James and it’s predecessors.
It was illegal to have a Bible in the common language. Many died horrible deaths, just to translate a Bible into the common tongue. Study about Wycliffe, Tyndale, the Waldensians, the Huguenots, and others.
There's much wisdom shared in your discussion of Rev. 2-3 and throwing fire balls at churches over this. It can be very tempting to "throw the baby out with the bath water" and do far more destructive harm to a local church body by handling this ungraciously. I appreciate your reminder that God is at work in a local church despite whatever is "wrong" that needs course correction.
Right-which is a sword that cuts all ways. Christ is doing good to our right and, gulp, to our left. =| And even in our own churches, full of sinners as they are!

Is it fair to say that the KJB is 400 years old? You know that I’m on yiur side of the KJB/ TR debate, but would it be more accurate to say that it’s closer to 250 years old seeing that the revision of the language was in 1769 ?
As a KJV-Only guy I would say it is 400 years old based on how minor the change was in 1769. While it would have been nice if the 1769 was more modern English, the difference between 1611 and 1769 if read out loud would have less than 300 changes. As comparison, between the NASB1995 and NASB2020 there are 515 changes in words in Hebrews alone.

I went to a museum and got to read an actual 1611 , it was non readable in my opinion.
Have you read the Translator to the Reader preface to the original KJB ? They absolutely wanted future generations to have a vernacular translation in there current English.
@@michealferrell1677 The 1611 is easier to read in modern font, once you get the changes to spelling, it is actually very readable. At first blush is looks foreign, but heck, can you read the following from the Bishops Bible??? My bet is you can.

Have you read the Translator to Reader? I found that far, far harder to read than the Bible itself.
Sure, would be great to have an update to the KJV, but from a practical standpoint based on the Derivative Copyright Law and other consideration is really cannot be done.
This is my struggle. Thankfully, God is corralling me back to a far more reasonable position.

I just watched Amish and the Reformation by Joseph J. Garber. There seemed to be many parallels with KJVism. Do you agree? Where do you see KJV churches being in 100, 200 years?
That's a question for my friend Omar, whose family was saved out of the Amish.
As for the future… I think most of KJV-Onlyism, minus the extremists, will transition to modern versions with a whimper, not a bang. I think the internet has already changed the younger generation, made them more open to a modern translation. I think some extremists will continue to insist on the exclusive use of the KJV for multiple centuries, should the Lord tarry.

It would be a logical conclusion the NLT will in their next revision open the door for female pastors. Maybe there might be a revival of the KJV as modern translation move left. You never know.
@@casey1167 We still need to obey 1 Cor 14 even if some people on modern translation committees are disobeying 1 Ti 2:12.
@@markwardonwords Dr. Nijay Gupta has a section on 1 Cor 14:26-40, and he is responsible for the Letters (per the NTL website) And he believes it only relates to tongues basically.

Yes, Selmer, you are exactly right! The documentary "The Amish and the Reformation" closely parallels the current situation with the KJV. The early anabaptists were willing to suffer persecution for the right to have the Bible in their own German language. Because this was such a hard-fought battle, the Amish still cling tenaciously to their German Bible even though they don't converse in that language today. Now, the tables have turned and the Amish church (in many cases) now persecutes its own members who want to use a different translation they can understand! - Omar (formerly Amish)
I am a KJV Onlyists, I see myself facing the problem with the book being outdated, It was last updated in 1769. Is the Greens literal translation bible written on the same text as the KJV an acceptable alternative made in 1993, I know in my Bible there are 824,805 words, A reasonable estimate would be 1000 or outdated, another 1000 would be on their way moving out of the dictionary & daily usage, Why is it that no one is talks about this, Why do we hear everything but this, Solve the number one problem at a time, First things first, & Then solve the rest.

@@markwardonwordsits probably way too late but i thought i might as well clarify for him just because i saw this. it sounds like hes asking if the greens literal translation (still being based on the tr) is acceptable compared to the kjv as its a lot newer, because he has issues with reading the kjv because of the outdated words.
I will never leave the KJV only and read a watered down bible that is not the word of God in heaven.
The KJV is an excellent translation-but if you're going to read it exclusively, you need to understand that it was translated into a form of English no one quite speaks or writes anymore. So there are going to be some places where you think you understand but, because of language change, you're going to miss the intent of the KJV translators. I was never a TR or KJV person ever, even though I graduated from a KJV only Bible College and still attend a KJV only church in which I teach in. I prepare my lessons using Gk/Heb first, then my trusty Net, LSB, CSB. Lastly I print them in the KJV text, as that is a requirement in the Baptist church that I teach in. I would never use the TR or KJV under any circumstances, they are not my cup of tea.
So, as a student of Hebrew, which is a better translation between the CSB and the LSB for all of Genesis?
Of the changes between the CSB2017 and the CSB2020 they moved away from the LSB reading 12 times out of 14, and 1 time to the LSB. Did these changes make the CSB more or less correct?

@@casey1167 both sir are absolutely brilliant, I would use BOTH TOGETHER, and compare. The LSB is more LITERAL(not always a good thing) the CSB gives literalness coupled with the THOUGHT behind each word. USE BOTH TOGETHER, to get the full flavour.
Good soups have more than one spice in the dish!! I also use the NET Full Notesb(brilliant) for added comparison.

Gen 4:20 in Hebrew Father can mean:
- Literal Father ie Adam was the Father of Cain and Abel.
- Father ie head or founder of a tribe/household
- Ancestor ie Kind David was the ancestor of Jesus, hence his distant earthly Father.
- Ruler/chief. A term of respect for the Elders.
Only context will enable you/me to know what is meant by the Hebrew (Ab).

There is no difference in meaning here "you have vs you've done, both are OK. The CSB sees it important to communicate God's Word in modern current English ( a very very good thing)!

The Heb is MEQOMENU, it has a wide set of meanings:

Land
Region
Place
Office
Therefore different translations and editions of various translations use different synonyms, depending on the translator.
It's not EASY to translate from a Rich Semetic language to a Stone Age English language...lol, you get my point? All the translators of our various bibles did a very good job in most cases.
