Why have I fallen down on a youtube binge (re) watcher looking at this super old video when I have exams in a week. But it still helped me learn that dust forms parallel parasitic resistor lowering its gigaohm value.

Thank you for showing us your crazy resistor. I need to get me a lab type place. And a place to get cool things other than ebay.

I have also 410A, your video is very nice, thanks a lot for your demonstration.

I wonder if you could use this as an overly sensitive, unreliable, motion detector

I recommend checking the DC-Milli-Pico-Meter MV40 made by Präcitronic (Dresden). I managed to get one, and I was able to measure the resistance of a 10000Meg resistor with the device.
Also that model which I have has an offset problem in the voltage range... It would be interesting to see your opinion on the working principle of that instrument. I can't get my head around the series-current feedback used by that device. Somehow they feedback the current via the deprez and they set the gain of the amplifier, thus setting the measurement range for the device. Neat little thingy...
If you are up to it, I'll provide some manuals, photos, stiched schematics, etc. I would be more than happy to discuss my findings on that instrument...

hello Marco Reps, could you explain how the electronic parts of 410A picoammeter work? Maybe an important component in making the 410A picoammeter? Thanks before.

Ohmite make resistors up to 10,000 GΩ. I'm pretty sure at resistances like that, you start having to worry about the parasitic parallel resistance introduced by empty air. How the heck would you even use a 10 TΩ resistor?

Keithly had some crazy old gear! Wish I had room for some, but I keep an old VTVM around for high resistance stuff (probing bootstrapped LTP, etc) but it definately won't do 100 gigOhms

This is the nerdiest vid I ever saw, and I'm a bigger nerd for enjoying it lol.......Sorry, but I need to ask again, what do you use this pico amp meters in your home? Do you work from home? The same thing goes for the 5 digit volt meters, apart from being a keithley fan/nerd ( and wanting them just for that) what actual use you give them? As an Electronics Engineering myself I can't see any use for them outside of R&D or VERY VERY VERY special cases, could you give me an insight?

    • @reps
      @reps  6 років тому +4

Yes, you are right, I have very little actual use for these special meters and I only got em for the interesting repairs etc. But my next "big thing" actually benefits from the high-res voltmeters!

Sometimes I think that you are testing the resolution of the universe, to be sure if we are or are not in a simulation, with trying to sense the smallest of values that we can measure.

I was thinking the same, but recently I started getting involved with photodiode measurements for professional reasons and you would be surprised at how small currents they generate. They are characterised at the nano and sometimes in the pico amp range!

So this is good for checking capacitor leakage on minimal amounts of monitoring base currents for gain calculations?

I wonder in which exceptional test environment one needs a picoammeter.

In the 1970's I saw an ad for a meter proudly claiming it could measure fA.

Also a high vacuum company claiming it was a leader in knowing more and more about less and less. Concluding that it would soon know everything about bugger-all.
