as someone with ultra tangly, wavy-curly hair, my go to is a classic tangle teazer on sopping wet, conditioned hair in the shower. It takes a while, though, and the idea of putting it even close to dry hair makes me cry in pain. I also have a 9-row denman brush for styling, that works really well too, and a relatively simple boar bristle brush for the days I've straightened my hair. But I've really noticed there's a huge difference in needs for wavy/curly vs straight hair.

I only comb my hair in the shower with conditioner. I HIGHLY recommend the foxybae round brush. Glides right through. Tangle teezer does nothing for me. My hair is VERY thick and curly. I have saved so many moms of girls with sensitive scalps & the brush isn't expensive. Best brush I have EVER used, its rose gold in color.

I have wavy hair and it is best to brush it when the conditioner is in it. For this I use a tangle teezer ultimate detangler - this is really good for wavy wet hair brushing. For boar bristle I have the Denman boar and nylon mixed brush. and I use a wooden brush with very long bristles that is kind of like a dupe for the TEK brushes, but it is even more beautiful and better. I have demoted an older plastic/wood paddle brush to use for hair oiling pre-wash. I follow all your tips, except maybe the brush recommendations I guess , but we have different hair :)

I personally avoid boar bristles since they’re normally byproducts of the meat market. I’ve use denman’s d series brushes for years because it works great at detangling. Was thinking about adding a wood brush since they’re suppose to be good at smoothing.

I have curly hair and detangling is one of the things I am very careful about. It would have been nice if your advices applied to curlier hair types: in general i love your hair content but it’s still very straight hair oriented lol. What is helping for the tangles is not to wait too much between washes, sleep protection is sooo important (I use the bamboon headwraps) and I first start with pre detangling with my fingers and an oil. It takes quite some time but it minimizes damage for me: you can seperate the hair, see where the knots are at, etc. It get at least some of the job done before washing. And I end up brushing with a very thick conditioner on wet hair to melt more easily the tangles. I do have the unbrush it does a good job but again I always use it with a conditioner to give slip. The tangle teezer is really good too but the bristles are firmer to give grip when you style. Oh and boar bristles brush just aren’t an option for my hair type: it would rip my hair so much lol. They’re ok for styling though

Mason Pearson has more options for sizes, brush composition, handle color including one with just boar bristles for sensitive scalps/thin hair. And I will say they are less expensive if purchased in England at an approved seller. I purchased mine in January while on a trip to London and I have zero regrets. The woman who sold it to me said she’s had hers for 40 years. I mean… that’s impressive cost per use for sure.

Foxybae detangling brush has been my #1 for nearly a decade. Doesn't catch my hair at all. Its not on anyone's radar and its amazing. I wish you knew about it. Id LOVE your opinion. Its the ONLY brush that has ever combed right through my hair. Has to be the round one though, not the square. I didn't like the square paddle. Best brush I have ever owned. I was not expecting it to be on the list. You probably haven't heard of it. It does have a cushion base. I cant stand the tangle teezer. I almost bought the unbrush.. so glad I didn't now.

One thing I've learned, as a very frugal person, is that if you spend money on a high-quality tool you use for many years, you will never regret it. I've had the Mason Pearson for over 20 years---it's amazing. I picked it as my Christmas gift, back when my family would each buy a $150 gift for one other family member. I bought a few dupes in the following years for travel, my partner, my child, and the dupes were OK but noticeably not as good as Mason Pearson. Sonia Kashuk for Target and Sephora had decent dupes, but a set of lookalikes from Costco was terrible.

Thank you, Abby, for such informative video on a topic I didn't thought much about! It made me realize that I my ideal brush is Wet Brush Original Detangler (and I already use something similar (only without a cushion) from some no name brand). I have a scalp condition, so ball tipped ends is a must. I don't like bore bristles, because it looks like they make cleaning a brush properly much harder. Detangling problem disappeared by itself, when I found wright conditioner.

Yes, I understand why you might not have had a good experience with the TTs. My daughters and I all have our own and they have been the best brushes we have ever tried. But that’s because we have thicker hair with medium-thick strands. My youngest still has some fine hair strands but the original TT does great for her. She doesn’t like to brush her own hair yet, but I think I’m going to get her a Wet brush Pro for her birthday coming up! I have used Wet brushes before finding TT, but I hated how gross the cushions would get, and I’m all for easy-to-clean!

I think if you have curly hair and detangle in the shower with conditioner, like I do, then the Tangle Teezer or Unbrush will be your favorite for that purpose. If you are detangling on dry hair prior to washing, then maybe one of the boar bristle ones will be preferred for that purpose.

This is a very helpful video. I have fine but curly hair so I like gentle brushes.
And I’ve been searching for a brush that might be like tangle teaser for years for my daughter’s hair. She’s half black and that type of brush works the best for her type of hair, she has 4b. And so a brush like a hair pick seems to work best. I had a brush that doesn’t exist anymore, that my son lost 😩. It looks just like a pick but is shaped like a brush- hard plastic bristles/teeth.
And on my daughter’s hair it’s more gentle and works so well. I’m going to get that tangle teaser and pray that it works

I have given up on cushion brushes.. They're impossible to get clean. With a brush cleaning brush, sure, decently clean.. But sometimes a clean with water and soap is necessary, and in those cases, cushion brushes takes forever to dry.. and we never know if there is mold on the inside.
The ones that are easiest to clean (that I've tried so far) is the wet brush speed dry vented brush, and the tangle teezer wet detangle.

It's perfect for wet hair and blow drying. The best brush for distributing oil through the hair is the Mason Pearson. For days brushing clean dry hair I use TEK made in Italy with very nice polished wood bristles. Those are the three best IMHO.

I actually never brush or comb my hair. The only time I do is just before washing my hair. I don't before drying them, not after drying them, not before styling them and neither when I apply my hair oil before drying them. My conditioner do the major job at detangle them so once I'm done drying my hair I do a very low twisted bun with clips or two light braids and they stay shiny, soft and detangled. My hair type is dark brown, very thick, slightly wavy and lots of them so maybe some people out there can relate.

Hi Abbey, thank you so much for the thorough and super useful breakdown! I do however have hesitations in purchasing boar bristle brushes - online there are different (often conflicting) accounts of how the bristles are harvested (some companies say they use the bristles resulted as by-products from the meat industry, others say the animals are bred specifically for the bristles to be harvested, etc. ) and I feel I cannot be confident in making a choice that is truly cruelty-free. Have you tried any vegan alternatives to boar bristles that you feel are comparable?

I have a Denman D93 tangle tamer gentle, and it's made for baby fine hair, like mine. It looks like a standard tangle brush when you look at it online, but in person, the bristles are super flexible and tiny, like really thin and bendy. Also, it's only like £12 😊 maybe not useful if your hair is thick because it is so gentle, but if you have fine hair like mine, I think it's the best.

A wide tooth comb is the most gentle. All hair brushes are damaging the hair! I only use the wide tooth comb now for the rest of my life! 😊

A long wide pick comb is great for getting knots out of wet hair before brushing. People often don't have the patients though to take the time to do it.

      All brushes aren't damaging though.

What about wooden brushes? I may have missed something you said about it but I have found those are really nice on my hair.

The best brush are your fingers at least if you have wavy/find hair :/ I had tried tek brushes, wet brushes, tangle tezeer brushes, and if they dont break my hair, they give me frizz

Heyyy I had the exact same issue! I swear by the dove intensive repair line. It’s around $8 for both the shampoo and conditioner. It made my hair sooooo soft.
