Incredible photos!!!! I loved when you said that it’s not about capturing the place, it’s about capturing how the place made you feel. Thank you for another amazing video, always so educational and inspiring
You are the second person within 72 hours Andy to post about Soussousvlei. The latter was predominantly video but both posts do justice to this truly amazing landscape. I'll bet you wish you had made this journey years ago. Once Africa gets in your blood, you will want to return again and again ...........
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. I’l check out the video you linked in your email when I’m back in a place with enough bandwidth to watch YT videos. I’m currently hiking in the arctic circle and the bandwidth here is tiny
Thank you for the great photos! It gives me great pleasure to look at such quality pictures. Nature has prepared so many wonders for us that there will never be enough time to grasp and learn about them all. But thanks to you, at least we see something of it all.
I've seen a few videos about photographing Deadvlei, yours is by far the best, as you've really explained composition and demonstrated it with your photos.
I’m sorry, but that picture at 3:55 is simply incredible. I’ve been looking at it paused for the last minute. Unreal. Amazing work Andy, truly amazing.
Totally agree. I will be waiting for it to be available as a print on your webshop. My home is filled with Namibian photos which I shot myself but this one would be such a wonderful extra to add. Please add it to the shop… ☺️
@@AndyMumford Hi Andy! I'll be going to Namibia in 10 days and am extremely excited about photographing the sand dunes. Like the author of this original comment, that picture is ethereal and have seen its location on various other accounts and am wanting to find this spot as well. Thus I was wondering if there is any chance you still know where this particular photo was exactly taken having the tree in front of the dune ridgeline so I could go there and try it myself :) Thanks in advance !!
Very amazing landscapes Andy!!!! 😇📷🤩📷🥰)))) Wait until you visit the dunes of "Duna Federico Kirbus" in Catamarca, Argentina which are more than 1.000 meters tall. 🤩📷🌞🤩📷🌞🤩📷
So very happy for you that you've managed to realise your photography dream, Andy! And what an incredible dream it is! As always, your captures of the atmosphere and mood in your images are superb, and I love your abstract vision - it reflects the dynamic Namibian landscape wonderfully. Thank you for sharing! 🙏
A fabulous video Andy - some very strong images of Deadvlei. Brought back some great memories. Much looking forward to the next one of the skeleton coast. Good luck!

Amazing images of a truly amazing landscape! Looking forward to your next episode on the Skeleton Coast. Looks like it might be an interesting place for catching the milky way...
Incredible beautiful photos, especially with the sand blowing. We’ve been at Deadvlei in August 2017 but sadly had a sandstorm with views about 10 meters wide. But your pictures encourage me to return.
Thanks so much for the comment. That's a pity about the sandstorm, but it's quite rare to get wind there in the winter so for sure you'll be luckier next time you go
Absolutely fantastic images Andy. Such a wonderful experience for you. I still look back to our tour with you in Norway as being a high point for me. Best regards, Colin.
Thanks Colin, hope you’re well. That Norway trip really was a special trip. I’m back in Lofoten right now actually, but as it’s summer we’re hiking up the mountains and seeing it from a totally different perspective
Andy, I'm headed to Tanzania this year and will be bringing my new xt5. Currently shopping for lenses and your reviews are so helpful. Know you are primarily landscape, but would love a video about tips/tricks you've learned for wildlife photography too. Thanks for the videos!
I'm doing some wildlife trips, but not until 2025, so I'll probably leave it till then. It's not an area I feel I know well enough to speak with any authority on
Cheers Jeroen, it's a great place to shoot images. And it's not actually too hot. I was there in winter, and the only time I was really hot was recording this video. In a lot of the places we were, and around sunrise and sunset, you really needed a jacket to not be cold
This episode is really amazing and inspiring! And the GFX is really detail and look really better! Thank you very much for making the amazing content Mr. Mumford!
Absolutely incredible images. Well done Andy. I would like to go there next year and would like to know the name of the place with the tented chalets that you stayed in at the park. All the best, Peter
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. The name of the lodge is Dead Valley Lodge. It’s one of just two lodges that give you access before sunrise and after sunsert
Thanks so much, really glad you enjoyed the video. At the moment I’m planning on putting together a photo book later in the year and some of the images will be in that. There’ll also definitely be some prints made available when I update my print collection, again, at the end of the year. I’ve never done a calendar, but at some point I’ll probably put one out
Andy, funny enough I was in Namibia two weeks ago and I downloaded a few of your videos on UA-cam to occupy me and brush up on some composition tips for my trip. It was very helpful and I got some of my favorite ever photos on that trip. I hope one day I can join you on a workshop. I was just on a standard group tour and I found it very difficult sometimes as the only photographer on the trip. But nevertheless, Namibia is a truly and uniquely beautiful place that I will be heading back to someday.
Oh and by the way, for your future travels to Namibia, I recommend checking out Bushman's Camp, it's on the way from Sossusvlei to Walvis Bay, after Solitaire, and it had some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever seen, and great for astrophotography as it was the only lodge around for hours.
Thanks so much Nick, we stayed in quite a few locations and did quite a few astro shots. They’ll be coming up in some later videos. Namibia is indeed incredible and I can’t wait to go back
Another brilliant video! Namibia is also a dream of mine, but I can't see it happening any time soon... Do you ever run workshops in Portugal? I'm also a long-term resident and getting down from the Coimbra area to the Sintra coastline, for example, is more within my means...! Really feel I could learn a lot from you - I always learn so much from a 15-minute video! Thanks!
I’m so glad you got to realize a long held dream and thank you for sharing your experience with us. I love your insights into shooting a location. I also have a question about preserving your equipment in that sort of environment with blowing sand and dust. Did you take steps to protect the camera on location or was it a case of cleaning equipment afterword?
Beautiful and so interesting pictures. Congratulations. And thank you much for sharing!! One question Andy: I know that with a 100 mgpx sensor you can have bigger pictures in order to print them. But are there many and big other differences if I would take this pictures with mi XT 4? Thanks.
Thanks so much Tomas. For sure you get larger prints, but there’s also increased dynamic range and less noise. However, if I’d shot them with the XT4 you probably wouldn’t see a difference on the internet or here on UA-cam
I am off to Namibia this September and I am really excited. I see that you have used the GFX100s as your tool for this trip. I am thinking of changing to this camera as I loved the quality that the GFX50s gave me, however the lens range was a problem and I ended up with an X system in my bag too and hence I was ending up trying to decide which to use and too much to easily carry. Are some of the images shown heavily cropped to cover the lack of long lens availability? Excellent video.
Hey Andy, great fan of your work. I was wondering if the image would look better at 09:10 if shot at longer exposures, say 0.5 sec? I know the conditions were not conducive, just wanted to know if it would make the image more dreamy.
Thanks so much for the comment. A long exposure wouldn’t have captured the dust along the bottom of the pan as it was moving too fast, adn the dust behind would just blur into a mass of white. Long exposures were also impossible in such high winds (it was really blowing) and we were trying to shoot as fast shutter speed as possible to remove any chance of shake
Thanks so much. I was there in winter so it wasn’t really hot enough for heat haze. At least, I don’t remember noticing it. Have fun on your trip, it’s an amazing place
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I used a plastic rain cover a lot when I was shooting, and most of the stuff in my camera bag was kept in zip lock bags
The dedication, the knowledge, and the result stamps a proof of your professionalism in this field 👌 A little input: It was kinda hard for my sensitive ears on the first 4 minutes. If you can do a narrative-type video with a portable sound booth like bbc earth, I'm sure your sound quality will be improve drastically. But really enjoyed this video overall..
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. With regard to the sound, some of the video is recorded as a voice over, but the first part is recorded on location, which is something I love doing because it’s so much more evocative. Unfortunately I don’t have the budget or carrying capacity to bring along a portable sound booth
Fantastic images, Andy! I noticed you picked up the GF250mm…what are your thoughts about that lens? Was it worth the price and how was it lugging that beast with you in your backpack?
Hi Scotty. I just borrowed the lens. My partner in Namibia has the 250mm and I used it on a few shots. It's a great lens, but very very heavy and with such a limited focal length I wouldn't carry it if I had to hike anywhere.
Might be weird question but where would you place a ff-system in terms of image quality, dynamic range, color depth and what you get out of the files? Closer to the aps-c or medium format or somewhere in between? As usual. Great video and stunning captures!
Thanks for the comment. Honestly, it’s so long since I’ve used full frame that I can’t really answer that question. And even then I’m sure different full frame systems have their own unique advantages.
Absolutely stunning Andy!!! It seems that the image quality out of the 100MP medium format system outweighs the benefits of shedding a few lbs from an APS-C system. I wonder if you would ever go back to the X-system even for long hiking trips?
I use the GFX and the X system side by side now. I’m in Norway at the moment and only have the APS-C, and I don’t feel like I’m missing anything by leaving the GFX at home, On the Namibia trip there was almost no hiking, so weight wasn’t an issue, but I found the lack of telephoto reach of the GFX pretty limiting at times
Beautifull pictures but to my opinion much too clean. I'd liked your X-T3 pictures much better. Got a lot more character in a sense to me. Good luck! I always enjoy your posts, thank you!
Thanks for the comment. Interesting that you think that. The GFX images here have been resized to small JPEGs, then inserted into a 4K timeline and resized again, then rendered with the video and finally compressed for YT upload. You simply can’t tell the difference between a GFX image and an XT4 image on a video like this. You see the difference in prints or zooming in on a computer.
